  1. I think the correct term should be not on ice, but "in ice". as the fish should both be on top of ice then covered completely with a layer of ice. Also a good market will have way fewer flies around because the floor should be disinfected every day and the smelly "fishy smell" will be kept to a minimum.
  2. I kid you not , a strike on every cast for over an hour. Hit the pier about sunrise and the bluerunners were busting everywhere. Schooling fish generally run all the same size and these guys went around 3#. Hard to put a count em, but I would think somewhere around 150-200 caught by 6 of us. Most fun I've had in quite sometime, this little guys really fight.
  3. I know YNCBASSMAN is in my area and I bank fish as well. What works well for me in canals and I know he fishes them is to cast to the opposite shore line and just drag the bait back into the water. As far as ponds I prefer to cast the shore line right at the dropoff.
  4. The only situation I would favor b/c over spinning is trolling, which seems to be uncommon on this site anyway. Other than that I can use a spinner using any technique that one can do with a b/c, even live bait, you can always use a baitrunner. For me the spinner is more comfortable in fighting a fish and casting it for long periods of time. I have use a b/c since 1953 so experience is not an issue
  5. The only trolling I do is in the ocean on a conventional rig, 20# pline fluroclear & 5000 & 6000 spinner with 20#,30#braid. I would see no problem trolling with 20braid# on a 4000, if you choose mono I would suggest soaking the filler spool in hot water for about 5-7 minutes, that will take the coil out of it and it will lay on the reel spool perfectly. Someone may have a better freshwater trolling option, I haven't done it in 40 years.
  6. I never consider the numbers imprinted on the spool as a recommendation but just a guide to what the capacity would be for a certain test line. First and foremost question is what are you going to use the reel for? For 6# I would think it's for smaller fish like bass, a 4000 series reel is larger than I would use. If you have a second spool and going to use for larger species, ok that works. Personally I'm a braid man, but your reel your choice. I'm not a big fan of topshotting but it does save money and 4000 takes a lot of line and much more than what is actually used.
  7. I don't recommend any brand over another, in that price range there is a lot of really decent equipment. I do my homework, try and find a real with specs and features that I'm looking for. How it feels on the rod is very important to me, however in this price range some reels come bubble packed and not in a box, those are eliminated from the git go. If I've made a mistake in my purchase,I have knowledge not to make it again.
  8. My family was in the fish business for 40 years. Commercially caught fish are immediately iced, once back at shore they will be iced again and boxed. Shipped to wholesale distributors, then local markets buy the boxed fish and put them in their showcases. From catch to local store can be a number of days. Once purchased by the consumer the fish were then filleted or cut into steaks, wrapped in ordinary "butcher wrap paper" and taken home uniced, to my knowledge the fish were always fine. We handled both fresh and saltwater fish. I do know people that live in the hot desert take an ice chest with them to the grocery for all their food. Always make sure the eyes of the fish are clear and if possible avoid any market that cleans fish in the " backroom and not in front of you.
  9. It is a big drop, I did it twice and at 64 I won't do it again.....lol
  10. I use horny toads, but any of them work. I like a 4/0 wide gap skin hooked, most weedless I have found. The lures with 2 hooks will catch floating weeds or grass between the hooks and the body.
  11. I did stop by the park off yamato a couple of weeks ago. There are quite a few small ponds there, got out of the car and the bugs were overwhelming so I left and fished the bigger lake off Glades. There is a small pond behind a park at 441 and Clint Moore. I caught a couple nice bass in there a few weeks ago. I have shimmied down to the Hillsborough canal at the south end of Boca rio canal, there are fresh water tarpon and snook in there.
  12. I think the placement of the wallet has much to do with it. I'd look for a different brand of skivvies that don't give ya a wedgie.
  13. I fish sea walls and piers all the time. Smaller fish up to about 6-7# just flip em up, larger you need a round bridge net
  14. I absolutley agree. I only carry one rod at a time and the tackle I need in a fanny pack or my pocket, everything else stays locked in the car. I've been a golf course member and I have never seen a fellow member do anything like that, they may steal your driver,j/k, but not a tackle box and a rod.
  15. I don't order anything on line so I wouldn't buy it, however there is no question in my mind that it is effective. Any business venture would not invest a lot of money in r&d, then market a product without field testing it first. I'm sure it works just fine, I have yet to buy any lure or soft plastic that does not work. I am using mirror lures paddle tails for saltwater on a jig head and they kill the bass.
  16. The reason you hook the shrimp thru the tail is when shrimp fear danger they go backwards. When using shrimp in current head hook them and just let them float. DOA terror eyes are a great bass bait too.
  17. Without getting political American manufacturers of any product will have a very difficult time in competing price wise with the present healtcare system. Many other countries either subsidize or socialize healthcare taking the burden off the manufacturing company, resulting in a lower delivery price. If anyone has paid healthcare for their employees you know exactly what I'm talking about, it's very expensive here.
  18. Jigs are an important part of my arsenal, in both salt and sweet water. Jigs date back to ancient times and many survival kits include them.
  19. In Florida the sun plays havoc on a car's paint job down here. Keeping a coat of wax on is essential to any car. My lease on my Toyota Solara convertible just terminated and after 3 years of not waxing the finish, not garage parked and being exposed to salt air by the beach daily..........the finish looks like it drove off the showroom. I don't think their paint job is a major cause of alarm. I just leased an auto that in my mind is the finest car I've had and half the price of many I've had before. For fear of being stoned the car shall be nameless.
  20. You people are in violation of the Official Male Code Of Conduct Further discussion will give all an automatic membership into the Log Cabin Republicans......... ;D
  21. I do this nearly every time I go out. I put maybe 4 things in a lure box in my pocket, after each fish I catch I change. Almost always it makes no difference on what I'm throwing or color for that matter, and I never use plastic worms of any kind.
  22. Nice fish...........
  23. 3 snook like this, 25mph winds 4-5 seas, I needed a longer arm
  24. I've caught some nice LMB in the Boca rio, never peas, If you are talking about South County regional, there is a lot of water there, I managed only a few dinks there.
  25. It would depend on what I did for a living, if my livleyhood was connected to the domestic market I would buy American without hesitation. I sincerely hope they make it, just works best for everyone. Wishing any American industry ill will shows a lack of compassion to our friends, relatives, and I'm sure some of BR forum members.
