First time out this year, was this a pattern?
It's definitely not too cold for fish to be active, I've caught fish this year in water temps around 40-45 degrees. I would say that based on the water temps and their depth that they are still in pre-spawn.

fishing in the REALLY early spring
Generally I have the best luck with lipless cranks, any type of crawdad or shad colored crank that runs 5-10ft, slow rolling spinnerbaits, and if you find an area where you catch a few fish try slowing down and fishing it with a soft plastic of some type (I prefer a wacky rig) or a jig. Most of the time the fish I catch are off main points in about 10-12ft of water. I hope this helps.

@ The Bassinator: Good idea, that or I can just hold them up for a pic and no I wasn't using a lipless crank, I was using a cotton cordell Big-O

17lb 11oz five bass bag
I have heard that this damages their slime coat, however I've seen many other members take pictures with fish laying on the ground. That being said it doesn't necessarily justify my actions yet I wanted to have proof rather than say that I caught five bass weighing that much. So if you want to help that's fine, but if you're in it to critisize others in a negative/bullying fashion than I would appreciate you keeping your comments to yourself.

17lb 11oz five bass bag
Got out and fished another local pond yesterday while the weather was nice. A storm front was moving and like usual they were biting well before the storm. These are the bass in the order I caught them: 18" 3lb 8oz, 17.75" 3lb 2oz, 19.5" 4lb 7oz, 17.5" 3lb 8oz, and 17" 3lb 2oz. http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb392/bassmaster102/18in3lb8ozlargemouthbassfortjesse.jpg http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb392/bassmaster102/1775in3lb2ozlargemouthbassfortjesse.jpg http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb392/bassmaster102/195in4lb7ozlargemouthbassfortjesse.jpg http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb392/bassmaster102/175in3lb8ozlargemouthbassfortjesse.jpg http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb392/bassmaster102/17in3lb2ozlargemouthbassfortjesse.jpg

Alright thanks bwell

After the Rain
I have to say that I have had good luck before the rain starts, or during the rain. I've had good luck fishing in the rain with lipless cranks, and after the rain the fishing tends to be a little slower. If the water gets really murky after the rain I fish with a spinnerbait that has gold willow blades.

First bass of 2011 at Newton Lake IL
Nice fish, my friend and I are heading to newton next monday and tuesday. Were you fishing the cold water arm or warm water arm? And what depth do the bass seem to be holding at?

Early spring fishing advice needed!
I usually have the best luck using lipless crankbaits, big O's, or strike king model a's. Most of the time the fish are fairly deep, but not always.
