Powell vs Dobyns....???
Just to clarify, the Savvy rods that are 7'3" and longer are the same price as the Powell rods at $169.99. The 7'0" rods and shorter are $139.99 for Powell while Dobyns rods are $149.99 - 159.99 in those lengths. I like Powell rods and have been using them since Gary Dobyns first designed them. Having said that, he did raise the bar when he started his own company. As David P. stated, you won't notice a tremendous balance issue with the Powell rods that are 7 feet and shorter. Powells are very good rods. Dobyns rods are just slightly better. Otherwise, Gary would be a fool to start his own company and not make any improvements on the designs he created at PowellCo in order to differentiate his products.

rod for every type of fishing
What is the reason for the original post? Are you just curious, trying to determine how many rods you should have, or is there an underlying concern for the funds necessary to buy a number of rods? If your concern is funds, you will do fine with three rods. Heck, it's better to start with whatever you can afford and purchase more over the years as funds become available. As you learn and master more techniques it will just come naturally to you to want more rods that fit those techniques specifically. Then you will have to decide where to draw the line and how specific you really want each rod to be.

Forget the golf comparisons. Let's talk about garments. (Yeah, my feminine side is coming out. ) You wouldn't wear your underwear to a wedding would you? You have your undershorts, shorts, blue jeans, dress pants, etc. and they all are used for different events. (You might even wear a g-string but that's a subject for another thread on another forum.)

Scumbag update
Wow! That should send a message to anyone who wants to violate the wildlife code in Ohio.

Is fishing harmful?
Generally speaking if you caught a fish multiple times in one day it was probably a younger, aggressive fish and as long as it wasn't gullet-hooked the fish will be fine. If you caught a huge fish multiple times and had to play the fish for a long period the additional stress to the fish could be detrimental. However, in my experience, there are very few big fish that would bite multiple times in one day or they wouldn't have lived long enough to be huge.

Is fishing harmful?
Yes, if you don't wear a good sunscreen your skin will bake. The answer depends on your source of information. Fish feel pain but their brains process the stimuli differently from us. Some say they feel little pain. Some say the mouth of the bass feels little to no pain. Worst case scenario is the bass feel pain. Best case is they don't feel pain, but they get the bejeebies scared out of them because something has hooked their mouth and is pulling them through the water. If you are going to fish or hunt you must resign yourself to the fact that you may cause pain or kill an animal. Wildlife derive benefits from fishing and hunting as well. Most of the money for conservation efforts and management of species is produced by license fees.

Braided line? Why?
Most of the lakes I fish have either heavy brush or vegetation. Pitchin' and Flippin' with braid is the way to go in the worst of it. In another thread I mentioned that I fished a muddy lake last weekend and the only way to get a bite was to pitch or flip right next to the tree trunks. These trees had many branches so it took a lot of effort to find spaces and openings to flip through to get the lure to the fish. I used braid. Under these circumstances, my description of the use of braid is as follows: Boring . . . . no. Easy to catch fish . . . . no. Difficult to cast . . . . yes. Rewarding . . . . absolutely. Ok I get it. Im the only one. I'm not sure I know what you mean. No joke was intended. I just posted the wink to let you know this debate was all in the spirit of good fun. Maybe I should have posted a standard smiley instead.

Boat Storage Cost?
KU, I haven't shopped around in awhile but a few years back the highest priced covered storage on the Missouri side of the state line was 50 - 75 dollars. I found a storage location near Smithville Lake that charges 25 dollars a month for outside storage inside a locked chain-link fence with 24 hour a day monitoring. I pay 6 months at a time and get a discount of a couple of dollars a month. Most places in this area will be much more expensive. I called quite a few places before I found this place.

What does your name (Handle) mean?
My handle means I'm freakin' losing my mind! A few years ago I recorded a progressive metal demo of eight songs on which I played all the instruments. It was recorded under the name, senile1. I have been a guitar player for many years and can also play some keyboard, bass, drums, and the trumpet.

Whats the most important thing to use while fishing?
That's the first thing that comes to mind. Secondly, make sure you check your horoscope.

How can you tell if a farm pond has any bass in it?
Yeah, if it has bass in it and it hasn't been fished in ages you should know quickly that they are there. They are unconditioned to any lures and will probably bite about anything.

I need some new clothes...
Yeah, the Columbia shirts are nice and I have a couple, but stripping down to shorts and wearing a high enough SPF sunscreen to avoid burning keeps me cooler than anything.

5/30 - One Big Party On The Water!
I do like the colors on that smallmouth. And that sunfish has a big appetite!

Oil Spill
It is logical that BP would try to stop the spill with the method that has the most probability of success first. Having tried a few things now, I have no confidence that this will be corrected until the relief wells are completed.

What's your go to bait for BIG Bass ?
I agree. There is no magic bait that will turn you into a trophy angler. I tend to think larger baits are more likely to entice larger fish but the fish often prove me wrong.

What is your favorite moment while catching a Big bass
Often a big bass doesn't strike viciously. So there are two moments for me: (1)When I feel the size of the bass on the line, and (2) When I see its massive head break the surface.

Cant Catch A Fish Flipping/Pitching
And if the water is very muddy make sure you are pitching right up next to the cover. A few inches can be the difference in getting bit when the water is muddy and the fish will hang tight to cover. I fished a very muddy lake Sunday. The only bites I had occurred when pitching and flipping to tree trunks in 8 feet of water. This means finding breaks and spaces between branches to get your lure up in there. The bass that I caught were tempted by jigs placed right up against the tree.

boat pressure
Fish naked, wear a Robinhood hat, and carry a bow and some arrows. When another boat is seen shoot a random arrow off into the lake. Remember to wear a high SPF factor sunscreen.

Rage Tail. Epic Fail.
New Angler stated: I agree with those who have stated that some baits don't work for some individuals. However, before you give up on Rage Tail completely I would suggest you try the Craws and the Chunks. You don't mention that you have tried them yet. I use these as jig trailers and the action really does attract nice bass more often than not.

A sad day for music...RIP Ronnie James Dio
I meant to post about Dio but I got sidetracked by work. I listened to Dio all the way from his days with Elf, through Rainbow, Sabbath, and his solo days. The Sacred Heart tour in 85 - 86 was the most expensive and elaborate tour at the time. It was amazing how such a small man could have such a powerful voice.

Muddy, falling water?
Also, if the water is falling after a heavy rise fish tight to cover that is submerged at the original waterline before the rise.

fish doesnt recover from hookset
There is nothing wrong with feeling empathy for a dying animal. This is quite normal for anyone, young or old. When a young child is first exposed to an animal's death, especially one where the child was instrumental in the animal's demise, I would be worried if a child didn't feel these feelings. That feeling is part of respecting the life of the animal and its role in the food chain. Of course, logic must be used, and taught, to keep these feelings and emotions in perspective. Though we learn to accept that this is a part of the life cycle, it doesn't mean that we no longer feel empathy for the animal. Anytime I wound a bird and have to kill it by hand it is a necessary task, but it is not one I enjoy or feel neutral about. A clean kill where the bird is gone in an instant is much easier for the human psyche. The same is true for cleaning crappie that are still alive before the filleting begins.

Is the front of the boat an advantage?
It depends to a great extent on the attitude of the person in the front of the boat and the type of fishing. When I fish with another person I try as much as possible to position the boat to equalize opportunity between me and the person in back. When continuously moving the person in the front does get to fish the water first which can be an advantage, though the back person can use a different lure and/or different angles which can sometimes be what the bass are looking for. In a strong wind without an anchor if the person manning the trolling motor is trying to equalize the odds between the front and back, he can spend a lot of time and effort keeping the boat positioned and this can affect his fishing. This is especially true when one is trying to hold the boat in position to fish an area thoroughly. If the cover and structure allow the boat to be positioned with the bow pointing into the wind and the area to be fished is parallel to the boat, then the odds are fairly even.
