  1. I'm sure this has been asked before but, I'm looking to start expanding my collection of fishing gear. Right now I just have one baitcast set up and one spinning. What are the common set ups for doing different jobs?
  2. I saw these at Gander Mtn and I really want to pick one up. Anyone have any experience with them, are they worth the money? Reason being I keep my tackle in a backpack that won't accomodate the bulkier spinner boxes. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_54763____SearchResults
  3. I have two questions on this matter that I'll just throw up in here instead of starting a new thread. I've never tried using a trailer, what are some suggestions on trailer selection? Also, I noticed Glenn mentioned he prefers to throw a 3/4 ounce spinner bait. I've never seen anything over a 1/2 ounce. Where can you find larger?
  4. I'm hoping to come out for this one seeing how I had to cancel my vacation for the second summer in a row. I have to make up for it by taking 3 vacations next year! BRB-Flippin laydowns off a pontoon boat at Pickwick Lake
  5. I use a left hand retrieve on both my baitcaster and my spinning reel. It's the most comfortable for me and that's all the reason I need. The only drawback is when they have the previous year models on clearance at Gander Mountain they are always right hand retrieve
  6. I use the OFF Sportsman and I still get bit up. I'm going to buy a thermacell and see how it works
  7. I know someone who was permabanned from Ebay for doing stuff like that. I would ask for a refund (if that's what you want), if he/she doesn't allow refunds (because a lot of people won't)...just explain that there is nothing wrong with the reel, it's just not the one you wanted. Someone who was looking for a 7.1:1 would probably love it, it's just not what you want. If they still don't cooperate negative feedback, report them to ebay admin. I have bought and sold a lot of stuff on ebay over the years with good experience...however I wouldn't pay more than 80% of retail for something "like new". If it's not brand new in the box, it's worth spending the extra $10 and getting it from the store.
  8. I think the idea is that if you have no idea where the fish are on say a 4,000 acre lake...you can use your basic knowledge and depth finder to narrow it down. However, using a spinner allows you to cover the maximum amount of area in a minimal amount of time. That being said, I still don't use them.
  9. It's not about what you know, it's what you can prove. I would rip out the page from the ODNR rules and regulations, highlight the line and leave it under his windshield wiper.
  10. I'm going to have to start cutting line, it's 30lb braid. It would be a lot easier if I took the spool out.
  11. I'm not familiar with the locations you're going to be fishing, but it may help for you to know that our summer has been way below average as far as temperature goes. Early in the summer I was catching fish in deeper water (i'm assuming because we had such a hot spring), now everything I catch is probably within 15 feet of shore.
  12. I have a Abu Garcia silvermax with the world's nastiest backlash. I'm going to have to take it apart to clear it. I don't have a schematic, and have never taken a baitcaster apart before. I took out the three screws on the left hand (crank) side of the reel and backed out the long screw on the top side of the reel but it wouldn't come apart. I could see the case starting to seperate on bottom portion of the reel, but it looked like something was still holding it together on the top so I didn't force it I just left it alone. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  13. My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it. ~Koos Brandt This was by far my favorite
  14. Zoom super flukes. I'm not even sure why I own any other lures/baits. I probably catch 95% of my fish on these.
  15. Ok, so maybe the better question is when would you increase the braking power? What is the advantage?
  16. Could someone explain to me how you're supposed to set the brake? I noticed that I am more prone to backlashes with higher spool tension when I lower the brake than I am with much lower spool tension at about 75% braking power.
  17. I figured out that the problem isn't the drag, it's that the line is slipping on the spool. Doh!
  18. Yes it's a spinning reel. I didn't have any problems with my original spool, should I try and put my old spool back on and see if it still has problems just to be sure?
  19. I recently bought my first baitcaster and when I was casting in my yard with a 1/2 ounce sinker I had 2 backlashes out of about 50 casts, and only one of them was bad. I went out today to fish with it for the first time, and holy backlash batman...I had 3 backlashes in probably a total of 10 casts, costing me almost all 150 yds of line. I set the spool tension so you have to jiggle the rod tip for it to fall, and the brake is set at about 75%. Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need some more practice?
  20. I just went out and fished for the first time since I changed spools on my president, I cannot increase the drag to my liking. Even when it's all the way tight I can still pull line out fairly easy.
  21. I picked it up today. Now I just have to figure out how to use it (first baitcaster)
  22. I was at Dick's the other day and they had a Abu Garcia silver max b/c and berkely lightning rod combo for 49$. It seems like a good deal, I know lightning rods sell for about $40 but I couldn't really find prices for the reel. I saw reels on ebay going for about $40-$50. What do you think?
