  1. Not trying to hyjack this thread but I thought my hands on review of the core 100 vs 50 deserved its on thread. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1248747454
  2. Shimano Core 100MG vs 50MG7 Hands On Reel Review Specs 100MG 50MG7 Weight(oz) 6.1 5.5 Gear 6.2 7.0 Bearings 4-BB,1-RB 7-BB,1-RB LineCap(#/yd) 10/110,12/90 10/105,12/85,14/70 LineRPC(in.) 26 28 MaxDrag(lbs) 11 10 Price$ $349 $369 (* Core100MGFV is 7.0 gear for $369) Rod: G. Loomis GLX CR722 6' Medium Line: Yo-Zuri Hybrid, 12# Test: 10 casts with each reel on identical rods using each one of three lures/baits Lures: 1/8 spinnerbait, 5" weightless grub, 5" zoom finess weightless worm Casts: 25-30 yds effortless, distance close to the core100 Brakes: 2 brakes on, 4 off Spool Tension: loose enough so 1/8 spinnerbait would fall fast Smoothness: like silk, no handle play or movement like the Core 100 Palm Fit: like a glove, perfect feel Backlash: NEVER (w/minimal thumb control) Opinion: A lot smaller than the Core 100 and very easy to palm, very low profile like the Steez. Ergonomics are great, palms much better than the core100. Very close in size to my Steez and in some ways a better/smoother feel and casts longer than my Steez. I could cast a 1000 times with this reel in a single day. Shimano has really hit the mark with this reel. It is now my preferred spinnerbait reel. FYI, take out a loan if necessary to get one of these reels, you won't regret it.
  3. As long as it has grass/reeds and some dead trees in it then its the correct level.
  4. I try to fish a variety of areas, baits and techniques just to keep from getting stale. My honey spot is a waterfall, caught 3#'der there this morning by throwing a spinner directly into the downpouring water (it lands behind the falling water and I pull it through) but even the waterfall catches have fallen off by 75% in the past week. Go invited by my neighbor to go to a big lake next weekend on his boat, hope we have better luck!
  5. Im fishing a lot of smaller private local lakes/ponds in the Frisco,TX area cause I havent bought the boat yet, trying to put off the boat till my son get done with school in 3 more years. Some of the water is 15-20 feet deep so I guess Ill concentrate more on the deep spots. Seems like the fish would still come to the shallow (1-2 feet) early in the morning pre-dawn and after dark. they were there when it was 110 degrees 3 weeks ago!
  6. So Raul, you want the focus on casting lightweight stuff? If it cast it better than the Core 100, then it will be in the next Zip code.
  7. Has anyone else notice a decrease in the amount of fish caught in the past week? Ive only caught 3 good bass (15" or longer) in the past 6 days and I fish everyday. I know my water really well (at least I thought I did) but the fish dont seem to be very plentyful there now. Even the shallow grassy areas are not very active. Back 3-4 weeks ago when the temps were over 100 here in TX I was catching lots of fish and even when the temps dropped 2 weeks ago I was still catching lots of fish but the past week has produced several skunks! Caught a 3#'der on spinner this morning but it was the only bite in 2 hours. Ive tried plastics/spinners/topwater/cranks, all of which are usually productive.
  8. According to Fedex it was just delivered to my house (new Core 50) from ***. Told wife to put it on my desk and leave it alone! I will be finshing with it by 6pm central time today. I'll fish both the Core 100 and Core 50 mounted on identical GLX rods so I can post a comparison/review tonight. Any specific test cases anyone is interested knowing about ?
  9. Everything is fine with the *** website and according to Fedex my Core 50 left California at 5:30pm this evening and its on its way to Dallas,TX for delivery to me this Monday afternoon by 3pm. Should be fishing with that puppy by 6pm. Hands on Review/Comparison between the Core 100 and 50 should be posted on Monday night! ;D
  10. I have 2 of them (dont fish with them) for my son to use, 1 cast and 1 spin, they are both 6' Med and in my opinion for $30 each they are ok for the money, especially for my son since he doesnt fish much. I made a combo for him with a BPS pro qualifer and it casts pretty good. However, I picked up one of them the other day after fishing with my Steez and Loomis rods and it felt like I was using a broomstick. So as long as you dont touch any of the better rods the BPS graphite should be ok. If I was going to be fishing alot, I would step up to a better rod.
  11. I would pay to see that! ;D BTW, I use shorter rods (6') all the time but I have tried a few 7' and I am more accurate with 6' rods.
  12. Im nervous, ordered my core 50 last night and now this morning the *** website doesn't respond, always gives a bad feeling in the gut when you enter that credit card and the next day the website doesnt answer. Crossing my fingers its just a tech glitch.
  13. You're an evil, evil, evil man... I should have mine by Tuesday. :-[ You guys are killing me! Just ordered my Core 50. Should have it Monday ($10 Fedex priority shipping) If its sweeter than my Core 100, it will probably melt in my hand.
  14. I felt pretty darn confident but fish for 3 hrs this evening and got skunked! Guess I don't have a clue!
  15. That looks like a good reel for the $$$ with decent specs, its $59.95 at BPS.
  16. So my expensive gear is not going to help my confidence? I thought I felt more confident or atleast more excited about using nice gear. Darn, I wasted $2500 in reels and rods. JK.... I believe you can have all the confidence and experience in the world but you have to find the fish before you can catch'em.
  17. I never hold or touch the line, thats why I bought the high end sensitive rod. Plus if I'm touching/holding the line then I'm not as prepared to set the hook. If I get a hard hit I will feel it in the rod and see the line become real tight. If I get a subtle hit I will still feel it in the rod and probably still see the line move when the fish tries to run with the bait. Not the same for everyone, but thats how it works for me.
  18. I'm looking for club in North Texas, North Dallas area. I live in Frisco,TX.
  19. My wife went fishing with me 1 time, made 1 cast, caught a 3 #'der, looked at me and said thats no challenge, whats the big deal. She put down the rod and started reading a book. That was 3 months ago and shes never wanted to fish again. Oh and she brags about it all the time.
  20. Its like anything else, your skill level will improve with more experience. The use of a high quality rod should help but nothing is guaranteed in fishing. I can feel a subtle bite with both a cheap and expensive rod but with the high end rod I can feel when the fish just touches the bait which sometimes leads to a premature hookset attempt and I miss the fish. I often have to force myself to wait a sec before I hook the fish. I have also found that the way I hold the rod matters, if I put a death grip on it the sensitivity decreases vs a more relaxed grip. I palm my reel kind of high and sometimes place a finger on the portion of the rod just above the top part of the grip.
  21. I sure am... I totally forgot about the new creamy white Curado!! ;D My beef with the "new" core is that it's so close to the same as the original that it hardly warrants excitement. it holds way less line than the steez, so your turning less mass in the spool. Which is wonderful, if you like light line or use braid. :-X Want to trade a steez for a core? I hate to see you shorting your casts. I'll pick up shipping on both sides. I already bought the Core 100 and look forward to getting a new Core 50. Oh and you can get my Steez's when you pry them from "my cold dead hand". hehehe Now back on topic, when does anyone think we will be able to actually purchase a new Core 50?
  22. IMHO, the new Core is definitely Shimanos response to the Daiwa Steez. I own 2 Steez and have cast a Core 100 a few times and I am no expert but for me I can cast longer distance with the Core. I love my Steez reel and rod combos and until you fish with a Steez combo you cant begin to understand how the weightlessness is such a pleasure to fish with especially when fishing plastic worms or shakey heads very slow. I purchased a Core 100 on ebay yesterday for $288, I should have it tomorrow and cant wait to fish with it. Bottom line is companies dont make their high end expensive products to appeal to the masses, they simply make it to show everyone what can be produced or beat out a competitor. Im really surprised the new Core isn't at least $400 because the compaines also know there are a few suckers like me that will pay the high price just to have something new and cool or bleeding edge.
  23. click the core link then click on specs 5.5 oz, reel competition for the Steez! Mount the new Core on the Cumara Reaction rod and you have the Steez assassin in terms of total weight.
  24. Many thanks for Glenn for the great spinnerbait video and tips! I have never been a big fan of the spinnerbait and therefore never had much success fishing it. That is until I watched Glenn's spinnerbait video. I know the veteran bass fisherman probably wont gain much from it but I has changed my opinion of the spinnerbait. I fished it exclusively this afternoon and caught a lot of bass by throwing it into the most awful looking places. I did make a big mistake by not keeping a check on the condition of my line and lost a big one when the line broke near the bait. I wont make that mistake again. My hit to cast ratio was over 30%. It was almost as exciting as topwater. Thanks again Glenn for the great video!
