Best Rod for under $200
X10 Yep, I messed up and probably missed that steez deal but it was the BEST deal for a $200 rod.

Best Rod for under $200
X2 (made at that price range) Before I made the expensive mistake of using one of my current rods and getting spoiled, I really loved the BPS johnny morris signature series rods (owned 4 of them) and especially at the great price (and the reel ain't bad either, just a little heavy).

Ordered A 2009 Kistler Helium LTA...
Wow, those are very nice looking rods. Wish my Loomis had that split grip. Congrats on your purchase!

IM8 vs glx?
Oh no, sounds like you never should have tried a GLX. It will ruin you for life! If they ever adopt the newer style split foam grip like the steez, I will be tradin all my steez for GLX.

IM8 vs glx?
If its "up there with the five hundred dollar rods" then why is he selling it for $175. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is and remember unless its a known product and its a just great deal, you get what you pay for. Dont expect a copy of a GLX, they cost over $300 for a reason. BTW, I ordered a G-Blanks for $170 just to see if its a good rod. I'll let you know.

whats more important? a good reel or a good rod?
I'm there with ya Muddy. I know it wasnt toward Kent. Some on here just can't pass up the opportunity to tell you what they own.... : Excuse me if I offended anyone, but I don't understand the problem with using the gear I own to illustrate a point. Its what I own and what I have experience using. I never knock anyone for the gear they own and it doesnt affect my opinion of anyone. I'm not bragging but I am proud that I studied hard in school and worked my tail off throughout my career so I could earn a good income and be able to buy what I what. Everyone should be proud of their accomplishments and never feel the need to apologize for their success. I know this is off topic but felt it necessary.

whats more important? a good reel or a good rod?
Thats an excellent point RW, if it doesn't feel good in your hand and function properly the fishing experience will not be fun no matter what the rod. However, a good rod is hard to beat. 8-)

Rod length?
Amen to that! I fish with all 6' rods (mainly cause I mostly shore fish) and they work great for me. When I buy a boat (after xmas if AT&T buys my employer) then I will buy 7' rods.

whats more important? a good reel or a good rod?
The ROD ! I can put a $99 (or less) reel on either my steez or loomis glx rods and it would be awesome but if I put my steez or shimano core 50 reels on a $99 (or less) rod it would just be ok (or so so).

throwing light baits on baitcaster?
Im not knocking spinning gear but thats why there are finesse baitcast reels like the steez and core 50. Trust me when matched with high end rods, they throw light baits really well and I dont have to deal with line twists.

throwing light baits on baitcaster?
Reels that can do that with ease: Domestic.- Curado 100D Chronarch 50 Mg Sol TDZ105H Import.- Alphas 103 Alphas Itö Alphas Type F Alphas R Edition Scorpion 1000 Scorpion 1000 Mg And the king of kings ---> Liberto Pixy Don't forget the Shimano Core 50MG or Daiwa Steez, they can do it ! (just costs more) Also, like others said, a good Rod will really help.

Steez vs. Core 50 vs. Pixy vs. Aldebaran
I can only comment on 2 of the reels (and I use both almost everyday): Steez - smaller size, smoother operation, more solid feel, exact click setting on spool tension knob,no play or excessive motion in handle, mag brakes with easy adjustment using external dial Core 50 - larger (than the steez but still small size), cast a little farther, some back movement in the handle,no click feel with spool tension knob, mechnical brakes require opening cover to adjust I like both reels, they each excel at specific tasks. The Steez is the better finesse reel, its really shines when slow fishing with senkos and and other plastic worms. The ultra lightweight of the Steez reel and rod combo is perfect for slow fishing. The Core 50 feels better to me with action lures like spinners and buzz baits. The reel is small and light but feels as durable as heavier reels. I also have a Core 100 that I use for frogs, jigs and cranks cause it is like a tank and handles heavy action best. Ive considered replacing the core 100 with a 50 but have decided to keep the 100.

Fishing with kids.
Looks like a good reason to buy 2 snoopy poles and 2 small spinnerbaits. You (and they) might be surprised at what they catch!

Golf course fishing
I would check with the local authorities for regulations on spraying chemicals in or around the pond. We have very strict regulations here and cannot use any chemicals that could get into the water that would harm the fish. We spray some bio-friendly stuff that helps control algae but even that is tightly controlled as far as the amount we can disperse and how frequent we can use it. Our ponds are very healthy and the big one is full of bass and bluegill, it also has 2 fountains and a waterfall each with a filtering system so the water is clean and well aerated. The depths range from 1 to 10 feet. Only issue is a shortage of cover, I think Im gonna try an sneak my xmas tree into the water this year! 8-)

Why buy Shimano MG 50 when the Calais is cheaper?
Hummm... Calais 9 oz vs Core 50 5.5 oz, 40% lighter, new lower profile design. Comparing apples to oranges. I fish with a Core 50 and Core 100 almost everyday and I will even prefer the core 50 over the 100 everytime (probably going to replace the core 100 with another 50 soon). Ive tried/fished a Calais and the Core 50 blows it away. Dont take my word for it, get your hands on both reels and using the same rod, try them and I can almost guarantee you will pick the core 50. I only paid $325 for a new core 50 a couple of days ago on ebay and got a great deal on new GLX for it.

Golf course fishing
I live in one of those gated communities with a golf course and our ponds are full of bass, the biggest pond is 5 acres and I pull 3 & 4#'ders out of it on a regular basis. Its a killer benefit living 1 block from a bass pond and makes the $1000/yr HOA dues worth every penny.

After a Missed Strike - Where Does the Fish Go?
Yea I grabbed the rod with that black senko and started throwing it, begged for almost 10 minutes but he never took it. I'll get him next time!

Newbie makes first purchase!
Athens, AL - Darn you have some fine water near you to fish! My wife is from Athens, AL and I am looking froward to the next visit to her relatives. Yo-Zuri Hybrid is a very good line for that setup. The reel is a good one to start, you will probably upgrade it soon. That GLX rod is awesome, it will surely spoil you forever, hope you have a good job cause you will be buying more GLX's soon. Good Luck and enjoy the fishing with that Rod! 8-)

Criteria and methods of judging rods
Hey Natural, can you get those covers in black or dark green ? 8-) Regarding rods, I believe if it feels good with the reel you intend to use and when you are fishing AND you can afford it, then its the right rod. Its always a plus if you buy if from somewhere that will take it back if you dont like it OR if you know someone that has the rod you are interested in maybe they will let you try it.

After a Missed Strike - Where Does the Fish Go?
After a Missed Strike - Where Does the Fish Go? Does the fish stay the in same spot or in the general area? Does the fish swim away because they are ticked off they missed a meal? Ive notice that if I recast in the same area, less than 25% of the time will I get a second strike and if so it could be a different fish. This morning I had a big bass hit a spinnerbait so hard it almost yanked my rod out of my hand (and yes I would have gone swimming for my steez) but I didnt get a good hook set cause he was off within 2 seconds of hitting the lure. Darn thing even had the nerve to come to the surface and splash his tail, it was a really nice bass! I'm curious what opinions others have on this situation.

best baitcasting reel??
If you're just starting to use a baitcaster, get a BPS pro Qualifer. Its $99 but easiest reel to use and learn on. I bought one for my 15 yr old son and he mastered it in a few hours. Utilizes dual braking system, both centrifugal and magnetic for a very smooth cast with minimal chance of backlash. Plus for the first 30 days, BPS will take it back and refund the full price if you dont like it. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_102287_100001001_100000000_100001000_100-1-1 Comes in both 7.1 and 6.4 ratios and weighs only 8.8 oz. You might even be able to pick on up on ebay for close to $50.

Bigger Bait, Bigger Fish
A $20 walmart setup will catch the same fish. I just like toys! BTW, I just picked up another Core 50 reel and GLX rod today. I hate having to stop and change lures.
