I've got the same Tatula 7'2" MHR rod. I also have one of the older Alton Jones Magnesium cranking rods. It is composite though, I don't think it compares to the new Mag rods. I like both rods a lot, for what it's worth.

No you can't do it without something to physically turn the rings, a lathe works best. Some people make makeshift lathes with drills that work. The cork rings are much larger in diameter that a grip. You have to glue the rings together and then put them on a lathe to shape them. That's why it's called "turning grips" like you asked earlier.

The MH LTB is going to be heavier than the MH Powell Max. I don't know about the ***. If you want something similar to what you have, get a M in the LTB.

I can't wait to see what Daiwa releases for the US market. I've seen some of the new reels Daiwa Japan has, I just wonder how many are coming here. Daiwa is also now the US distributor for Evergreen International. I'm hoping we see a bunch of new Evergreen stuff too.
