  1. yea, funny right! I have needle nose pliers, I just put those there for size reference because they were handy.
  2. i've been going out in the rain... better than not going out! but yea this weather sucks. My lake is about 2 1/2 blocks from my house so if I want to go, as soon as there's a break in the rain i'm there in 2 minutes which is nice. Fishing is good off the docks, and my buddies boat is there also
  3. in the car world we call that a ricer lol... is there a name for that in the fishing world, besides an idiot?
  4. you'll see that at most all big chains that sell many items. why? because you don't need an education to get the job, it doesn't pay well so qualified people don't want to work there, and what does the person care if you don't get what you need. Go to the auto section and look for some oil, or something else, and ask for help. bet you won't get the same answer as if you went to the auto store. Just like you won't get the same answer in walmart about fishing equipment as if you went to a fishing/tackle shop.
  5. I practice casting at a tree stump in the yard. Even if you only do it for a few minutes a day, it helps.
  6. I got a goose when I was about 8 years old fishing for carp with bread... not a fun experience.
  7. with all of the stick baits I have tried, I have found that they all work about equally. What you'll want to figure out is which is more durable, and which is the best bang for buck. That turns into an opinion, so try a few stick baits and see what's what.
  8. here's what worked for me on my pike/walleye trips. For the pike, spinnerbaits killed em all day. Nothing else seemed to work. Ideal locations were in coves and around islands where there were tall weeds sticking from the water. We threw the spinnerbaits right to the edge of the weeds, and if there was something in there you'll know! The weeds would start bending in half as the pike came out. great fish to catch! for the walleye we used nightcrawlers on jigs. They are school fish, so when you find one, there's more. Look for areas that are rocky, and they like to be fairly deep. Our best spot was a rock that was sticking out of the water about 100 feet off shore, and they were probably about 20 or so feet deep. The walleye were much less aggressive, seemed like they would bite and sit. so if you feel ANYTHING set that hook!
  9. welcome to the site! Be sure to read through the site, as well as the articles that are posted. I have learned more in a month than I have in years of trial and error.
  10. ask 100 people what color is the best, and you'll get tons of different answers. why? color does not seem to be as important as most people think it is. Most of the time I use watermelon. why? becauase that's what the corner store sells lol
  11. I agree. I'm fairly new to bass fishing, but have already done a ton of research, and am learning lots about their behavior, what makes them strike, what works, etc. I think that approach make much more sense than the angler who goes to the store, buys expensive equipment, and then catches nothing or a few small fish.
  12. in my lake as well, the fish seem to be moving out more. we normally cruise along the shoreline, casting in towards shore, and work it back. kills em. Lately it's been a tougher bite. For *** and giggles I started casting off the other side of the boat, away from the shore and towards the deeper water. Started getting them that way. Water is warming up, and more pressure along the shores from all the other fishermen. What does tht mean? Don't do what everyone else does. Get out there a lil deeper!
  13. when using the pliers, make sure you're pulling the hook straight out, (so it's coming right out the way it went in) not just yanking on it which would damage the fish. quick tug should get it free.
  14. start with the basics, like telling us what baits you use, and what techniques. THen we can try to help you adjust your techniques to better fish in clear water.

are you sure it's bass biting? smally sunny LOVE the arms and legs, and could be what you're feeling.
  16. let me say this... friday i was out on the dock, fishing off the shore. 3 guys came down with their expensive rods, and fancy reels, and tackle boxes that looked like they could stock a store. I outfished all 3 of them combined on my broken $18 dollar rod/reel combo. I dropped my other pole in the lake a few days before, so I had to take out the "good one" lol. So that says something, and like it's been said before, the equipment does not make the person. Someone with a $200 dollar set of dunlop golf clubs can outdrive someone with their $1,000 custom made driver. Just like someone with their crappy little boat and mediocre fishing gear can outfish someone with the best there is. Moral of the story is having more money than someone else absolutely does not mean you're more skilled. just means you have more money.
  17. go barbless or get some needle nose pliers. when removing the hook, try your best to push or pull so that the hook comes straight out, as opposed to just yanking and injuring the fish. A quick jerking motion should get it out no prob.
  18. if it was only that easy!! Like said, your best bet is to back off. Fish slowly. I fish a dam that has a road above it somtimes, and you can walk down the road and see the fish sitting there. do they always bite? no. I've found this is when patience comes in. When the fish are actively feeding, it's easy to catch them. when they're just sitting there, it's a little tougher. what seems to work is casting past them, and slowly getting the bait right in front of their face.
  19. i'm gonna keep trying. as far as calling for something different, it seems like they NEVER want the space monkey. Like I said, this is in a bunch of lakes many different times, not just throwing it out once or twice and calling it a day. tried it for a while today, nothing. it was me, 2 friends, and our girlfriend. the girls who have been fishing maybe 5 times in their life where catching fish left and right.
  20. Ok, I need some tips/advice as to what I could be doing wrong here. I have tried the space monkey a few dozen times in about 10 lakes at this point where I know there are fish. I have tried weightless, t-rigged, swim it on the top, pause retrieve pause, pitching it to cover, and everything else I can think of. I've yet to get anything other than a sunny nipping at the fins as they swim. People swear by these things, I've heard nothing but good reviews, but I get no real bites on them. I switch to something else, and bam, out come the fish. Usually I would just toss it in the box and put something else on, but for some reason I really want these things to work. These are lakes that on a good day when the bite is good me and my buddy can come out with anywhere from 20-50 fish in a few hours, and we've gotten close to 100 fish in about 5 hours. To give you an idea, the fishing absolutely "sucked" today and we got 10 in about an hour and a half. It's at the point where everytime I take out the space monkey my buddy laughs at me. I keep telling him i'm going to get one, and I want to! Any help is greatly appreciated.
  21. it's been raining pretty much every day here in jersey for weeks... the fishing is still decent, i actually prefer bad weather so less people are out. We went out tonight, and did ok, got 10 between the 2 of us but we normally do alot better... doesn't help when 3 boats just went through where you're fishing
  22. they only fish I don't like catching are babies... other than that, i don't care what it is, if it puts up a fight it's fair game!
  23. Got my first pickerel, was fishing off the dock. He took it about 10 feet off the dock so didn't really have a chance to see how he fought. I caught big northerns in canada though so i know these suckers can pull when they get big! Had a tough time getting the hook out, so I didn't snap a picture. Got him back in the water asap. Was just about 2 feet long, pretty skinny.
  24. you're not imitating anything by flipping and pitching. It's a technique for getting close to cover from a short distance with great acuracy, little splash, especially in tight cover.
  25. always have more than one, problem solved! I'll often buy one to try it, and if I like it I immediately buy a few more, this way you never have to worry about running out.
