fishing a jig
I got my feel for jigs fishing walleye in canada, and I think that helped big time. The walleye did not run or move at all for that matter, even after they were hooked. It felt like you were snagged on a clump of weeds, until they saw the boat and started running. But those bites were so subtle, took some getting used to.

how do you stop the bait monkey...
well, you're better off than me and i'm 27! I get tired and sore from lugging down the canoe. doesn't help that i'm a videographer and carry a camera all the time either. But 67 is no longer "old" (unless you're very young lol) especially if you're in good shape. I have a ton of family and so does steph well into their 70's and 80's and still pushing strong!

how do you stop the bait monkey...
LOL. The bait monkey has your number. The bait monkey is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. He/she/it doesn't care if you get a bargain or not, the monkey whispers in your ear buy, buy, spend, spend. 100 Gamakatsu 3/0 hooks for twenty something? A hundred of any type of hook would last me several lifetimes. At 67, my remaining lifetime is not very long. If you can still get out on the boat, you still have plenty of time to go! We go out with my buddies grandpa who's well into his 80's, still loves fishing. As far as the hooks, i'm going to be fishing with my little brother, and other friends that are probably going to lose them like crazy. These hooks go for 3.29 for 5 hooks here, so I just couldn't pass the deal on the 100. But yea, they'll last a d**n long time lol I'm still feeling out fishing from the shore at my lake, there's alot of stumps and snags on the bottom that are tough to get out without the boat. Fishing off the shore I go through hooks fairly quick. I'm learning the lake though so it's getting less and less.

Burner Spinnerbait
Anyone tried it? I was looking for a new spinnerbait and came across it, bought 2 and will be trying them out today. They look top notch. I'll let you know how I do on them today, didn't see anything posted about them.

Wacky Rigging
if you hold it in the water next to you, and jiggle the rod up and down a little (so you can see the senko and what it does) you'll see that it kinda flops and twiches, looks like something is dying which the bass love. There's a ton of ways to fish the wacky senko, what I normally do is throw it out there, depending on how they're biting sometimes i'll let it fall on a slack line and hit the bottom, or sometimes i'll flip the bail as soon as it hits the water and give it a few tugs so it twiches on the way down. after it sits on the bottom for a little bit (few seconds, or as long as you want) give it a few twiches, which will give it that good motion, then le t it sink back down. It has a heavier feel wacky style, I find it easier to drag along the bottom and know what you're hitting.

Wacky Rigging
wacky rigged senkos are my go to when nothing else works, and often what I use all day. I usually use a 5" worm, color doesn't really matter. When my buddy first told me about the "wacky rig" i thought he was playing a joke on me, I said that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard lol. Little did I know that i would be instantly hooked, no pun intended!

sure is! that's how i take care of the monkey lol. I got all of my go-to baits, they'll last a long time, and over 60% off buying them in the store.

When a Bass Jumps, what do you do?
same here. WHen i'm out just having a good time, I love watching them jump, even though i've lost a few good ones like that. But i'd take losing a nice fish on a jump and getting to see it vs. never hooking him to begin with. I just try to keep constant pressure on the line, and when they jump, I keep that pressure, but don't yank on it.

I go to ebay... doesn't stop the monkey, but you sure get more! Picked up 10 bags of senkos for 34 dollars, 100 gamakatsu 3/0 hooks for 20 something, and we just got about 200 yum dingers in various colors for 40 dollars. that's a d**n big savings. I go to ebay, sort by ending soonest, and start snagging them up!

What's the difference?
the nightcrawlers are usually much bigger. other than that, not sure that there's any other difference. I don't bother with them, because there's so many sunny and perch that every cast you'll be pulling them in, literally. they're great for my little brother or for anyone that doesn't have the patience to go after bass (like the gf's lol) but in my lake the only thing they're good for is sunny. which often fight more than the big fish!

How bad will my boat hurt me?
like said, i think there's actually a few advantages. the guys with the big motors are probably in a rush to get further away, passing some good spots. they're also more likely to decide to go somewhere else if the bite isn't good. on the opposite side, you're probably not looking to go out 10 miles before throwing your line out, which right off the bat gives you more time in the water. more time in the water = more time to catch fish.

Rant about fishing shows
I try to get the fish back in the water as soon as possible, i pull it up by the lip, take out the hook, and it goes right back. If i get something worthy of a pic, i snap a quick pic, and right back in the water. I also try to never touch anything on the fish other than the lip. only time i'll grab a fish is if it's a smally or something else that is too small to lip. but the largemouths are usually back in the water in a few seconds.

Bass and the Weather
thanks guys. I've been coming to this lake for probably about 2 years since i have a good friend that lives here, and now that I live here I get out more often. In 2 years of fishing i have only been skunked here twice. yesterday was the 2nd time. Thanks for the tip about weather.com, i go there almost daily but never knew they said anything about fishing! thanks bro.

Bass and the Weather
I've been trying to do more research about how bass react to weather paterns, and what that means for your fishing. I've found some good info online, but need a little more for it to really mean anything. It's been cold and rainy here for what seems like forever (few weeks) and the fishing has been for crap. Usually the bite on my lake is amazing, and it's almost hard to NOT catch fish. Can't go more than a few casts without pulling something out. The last 3-4 times i've been out have been awful. Tonight I got skunked, sunday I was out all day and got 1, saturday was out all day and got 2-3. Last week was the same. I would assume it's because of the weather. Now the real part of the question is assuming I have some info that tells how bass react to warm fronts, cold fronts, high & low pressure systems, how do I find out which of these systems we're having? Seemed simple enough, but I couldn't find any of that info. Also, from people with more experience, have you found that the weather has a big part in what the fish do, and if so, how do you change up your techniques? Sorry if these are silly questions, I tried looking for answers and couldn't really find anything. Thanks for the help!

Dock Fishing Lures And Tips?
that's what works well for me, skipping a senko right under the dock. Most people I see around tend to just fish around the docks, but don't really try to get under them.

funny to see this post, reminds me of my car forums. people say "My car runs xxxx at the track" yet they've never been to the track.

Post spawn whats your choice
so far only thing really producing consitently is the good ole senko. got a few on spinnerbaits, but nothing to brag about. I've tried a different assortment of lizards, kreatures, worms, spinners, usually come up empty and go back to the senko, and then start killing em.

Is fishing relaxing (semantics debate)?
I find fishing to be very relaxing. gets me away from everything else, and even if i'm very focused and working hard at what i'm doing, i still find it to be nice and peaceful.

Space Monkey Surprise
again, tried an nothing. on that same note, I have tried a bunch of different lizards, creature baits, etc, and the bass in my lake don't seem to want to go for anything other than spinnerbaits or worms. i'm going to keep trying though.

Do you care what you look like when your out fishing?
going out today, cargo shorts, white t-shirt, and sandals. i'll have the rainjacket handy. that's similar to what I normally wear.

Talked to a Very Cool Police Officer
i have alot of respect for officers. the problem is, that it's human nature to remember the bad times better than the good times. People don't remember the nice officer that gave them a hand when they needed it. they remember the story from a friend of a friend that said the officer was a dork. quite sad. but anyways, nice to hear a good story about the officers. When we were up in canada, got stopped by the game wardens, and at first they were all business. once they saw we had our permits they calmed down and told us all the good spots on the lake, and when to go, and what to use. good stuff
