Can anybody help a newbie?
Keep it simple. A white spinnerbait will work all year long. The key is to vary the retrieve speed. A crankbait, I use one by Spro. Its the little john 1/2 oz. In citrus shad that dives 2-5 feet, black with blue flake GYCB 4" senko. I would start out like that. Look for areas of cover where bass hide to ambush pery. Good luck.

How do you make your own structure for bass???
You can make them out of PVC, or you can buy the from Cabelas. Another option is to throw x-mas trees in the lake. I know people with priviate lakes that do that.

Ever tagged a fish with a paper hole punch?
Unless you work for the Department of Fish and Game you should not be putting holes in any fish unless it is a sharp hook hole when your fishing. I love fishing, don't get wrong, but fish can feel pain. I belive that dispite what I heve read. I also belive that fish are smarter than we give them credit for and do have some kind of memory related to "pain". If they didn't, I think we would all be catching 10 + pounders. Just my thoughts.

when do you keep bass?
For me its never. Even if something bad like that happends, and it does happen sometimes and it hate it, (I am a CPR fisherman) I release the fish. I belive in the food chain. Where I am from you really should not eat ANY freshwater fish, so it goes back for a preditor to eat. Again, that's just my opinion.

Chatterbaits
Yes, they are worth it. I have caught large fish on them, espeacially when I change its profile by putting on a beefy trailer. They have the actins of spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and jigs all in 1. I always use a steady retrieve but vary the speed and add twitches every once in a while. You won't get a ton of bites, but the ones you get will be quality, with or without a trailer. I prefer the 3/8 oz. with a black and blue skirt. I use a 4 inch Mr. Twister double tail grub in black when the bass are looking for a big meal. My biggest fish was 4 pounds 14 oz. That's a good size bass in New Jersey. Stick with it, it will produce all year long. Good luck.

How much do you think this fish weighed? No scale
The right hand looks like a 3 pounder. Can't tell the other one.

Spinnerbaits? Swimbaits? Oh my
You can throw a spinnerbait all year long. Vary retrieve speeds, slower speeds will let it get closer to the bottom. I always have an all white and a white with chart. 3/8 oz. with me all the time. Both have colorado blades. Black is a great choice for low light conditions.

Coffee Scented Lures
I have not bought into the whole coffee scented thing. I have never tried them so I can't knock them. It just seems like another marketing scam to me.

Fishing with beaver lures
I hear about people fishing with beaver lures and the sucess that they have had so I tried them out. Maybe I was doing something wrong but it did not look like the beaver really had any action unless you jerked it. Just swimming it with a stop and go retrieve or jig / shaking it did not give it any life. Can someone explaine how they should be fished, or let me know if that is the purpose of the bait, to be suttle or displace very little water. Thanks.

What would you buy?
Dawia with a St. Croix rod. I am a huge fan of St. Croix and own several of the premier and trimph models. I have a St. Croix reel as well, the avid series, check them out.

Crankbait, direct tie or snap swivel?
Direct tie. My feeling is that the snap swivel is adding something to your line/lure that will cause it to look unnatural.

favorite fall lure?
1/2 oz lipless crank in chrome or gold.
