  1. Do you put your jig trailers on by "threading" them on the hook (so the body of the trailer can't move, just the claws can move), or by just placeing them on the hook so the body of the trailer can move (side to side) as well as the claws. I use sweet beavers and paca chunks. Can someone please give me some advise, I am trying to learn how to use jigs and have already read links that people have posted on this site. Just trying to get advise on things not fully covered by the articals. Thanks.

When you fish in a tourney, what baits and how many of them do you bring if you are a non-boater. Also how many rods have you brought. I just had a tourney as a non-boater, I had 5 rods set up and I had problems chooseing my baits when I had to tie something different on. What depths would you chose if you brought three crankbaits? The angler I fished with back boated me hard. Can someone please help me for future tourneys. Thanks in advanced.
  3. No, I am sorry I was not more specific, the jig trailers would be non-floating, such as netbait paca chunks and reaction innovations sweet beaver 4.20.
  4. Can anyone tell me why large plastic jig trailers make the jig fall slower than the same jig with a smaller plastic trailer? I have read the links on BR about jigs but it does not confirm or give a reason for this. Everyone I have talked to says this is true, but why. You would think that a heavier weight would fall faster than a lighter one.....right?? The only thing that I can come up with is that the heavier and bulkier plastic trailer it creates more of a resistance in the water, hense slowing the fall. Someone please help me make sense of this. Its gor my head all twisted up.
  5. The little john is in my tourney tackle. I like citrus shad.
  6. Why do East winds make for bad fishing?

I use a waist pack that Cabelas carries. WFO Trek Pack, located in tackle bags. I have a Plano grey double sided hard plastic box (there are 2 sizes of plano double sided boxes, its the smaller one). You can also fit another type of slim box of the same perimeter size along with putting stuff in the smaller pouch on the exterior. It is comfortable, you hardly know it is there. Check it out.

I forgot to mention in my last post to check your line for nicks and also check your knots a lot. Re-tie frequently. Maybe change your line to braid. Good luck.

If you are losing jigs then you are fishing in the right place where the bass should be. Odds are you will probably lose your plastic and weight anyway unless you are skin hookin the plastic to make it weedless. The only difference in what you want to do with the bait is that you will eliminate the sillicone skirt that the jig has. Buy more jigs.
  10. Most all cranks will float to the top on the pause if you leave them there for more that a very brief pause. The lure will say suspending on the package or sinking for a bait that will sink when it is paused. If you don't see either of those two descriptions on the package, I almost asure you that it will be a floater.
  11. I agree with Gangly. If you whip the bait or have too much of a bow in your line this could cause the tankle with the line or actually cause the hooks to tangle with each other. You don't have to be violent with your gear when you cast to make it go far. Nice and smooth from the wrists, no arm and sholder motions. Also try to keep the lure closer to the water when you cast. If I had to guess I would say you rea using spin gear and not a baitcaster. Good luck.
  12. I don't buy into the whole red hook thing. I think it a ploy from the tackle companies to get people to buy stuff they already have and don't need. Every fisherman goes into the tackle shop, see's something he does not have, and talks himself into needing it. My opinion. Its been me on the other end of talking myself into needing some different that I don't have a million times.

I agree that sunglasses are extreamly important. I have a pair of Costa 480 swordfish glasses that are great. They were $200 and I got them from an eye doctor. The lenses a actual glass not plastic and you can get them in prescriptions if needed. I don't know anything about the 580's but the 480's are great.
  14. Well..... other than fulfilling his needs and buying what he wants, I don't think there is a way to become friends with him. He got me last night for $86.10 from tackle warehouse and over the weekend he got me at Cabelas for quite a bit more.

I don't fish jigs as much as I probably should b/c I don't think I have the technique down correctly. Can you give me some advise on how you fish jigs? Also can someone verify what I have been told? A large chunk on a jig will make it fall slower. A small chunk on a jig of the same weight will fall faster than the big chunk. True or false? It seems like they only make jig skirts in only a few color variations. Why is this and why do they make jig trailers and chunks in tons of color variations. Can some one explain this to me. Thanks for your help in advance.
  16. Situation - You are put in a boat with no electronics on a river/lake that you have never been on before. You don't know the water temp., depth, or bottom composition. With your polorized sunglasses you can see about 18 inches down into the water. Its sunny out but you can't take the season of the year into consideration. You can choose 4 lures of your choice. What are they? Be specific. Type, color, and reason why you chose the lure.
  17. It's happend to me twice. Once my youngest son made a cast when I was standing beside him, don't know how he casted in that direction even to this day. Fortunitly for me I saw it coming at me and put my arm up to block it. He continued with his follow thru only to notice the lure never hit the water and I was screaming for him to put the rod on the ground and get away from it. He saw the lure in my arm and started crying and ran over to the bench. Because I did not want it to be a tramatic moment for him, I calmly cut the line and walked over to him crying on the bench and told him that I was ok, but that is why I told him to always make sure that there is nobody next to u when you cast. He stopped crying and said he was sorry. I calmly walked away to look at the damage. One treble hook had 2 hooks deeply burried in me and the other treble only had one in me. Two of three were hooked WAY passed the barb. Had I known about the method with the line I would not have had to pull them out with pliers, myself. Quite painfull.
  18. I've never tried to fish a golf course, however I have thought of doing so many times and after reading these post I think I will definitely I will try soon.
  19. Try cutting off the hook/bend on the hook that faces forward on both sets of trebles. Doing this will lead to less hang up. I can tell you from experience. After cutting off the hooks simulate how they will swim throught the water, they will tuck toward the belly of the bait. No, you won't lose any fish either without the extra hooks.
  20. Great pictures all!!! Makes me want to leave work now and hit the water.
  21. check the weight of the lure, then look on the rod to see the max. lure weight.
  22. You just made me laugh out loud. I remember 1 time I saw the backward spin reel guy and asked him if he knew that he was not using the setup correctly. His answer to my question was "everybody fishes this way". I had a baitcaster with me so I just said oh, and walked away laughing. As for the others, I've seen some of them as well. Great post.
