'Reel' Problems
I experienced this in the 1980's with some regularity. In those days they referred to it as a backlash. There are 2 easy ways to fix it... apply more thumb or more mechanical brake(s). ;D Sorry, MN, it's been one of those mornings.

Best Bass Fishing State?
Boatless, For Largies you should look into Tx, Ca, Fl, Ga. but if Smallies are your thing go elsewhere. We have great smallie fishing in central Tx but they are small fish by your standards. Unfortunately there aren't many places with good lg and sm mouth size and numbers. If you narrow it to one state, you can get lots of specific help here.

So I tried Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft..
Roadwarrior, I think I know why You never have trouble with it and some of us do.... I have seen your set ups and how you fish them. You use #6 for a rod and application that most of us would use #10 or #12 for. (you use a lighter line for similar techniques than I so you always have less line issues.) Remember we both had Fat Ika's on at Fork and you had the LE (med spinning) with #6 Y-Z and I used a MH BC with #14 XT for the same thing. We just have different styles, based on our home waters. I use #10 for my spinning rod but we fish WAY different water. I'm in flooded and pecan & mesquite trees all day and you're in the river. I rarely hook a fish in open water. Both right for their respective environments, just different. To the other posters... trolling is an absolute must for trouble free fishing.

crucial rod 6'10" MHXF
For most people it's a great rod for that application.

Frog Rod and Reel Combination
I have a custom on that same blank and paired it with a 50MG, and swapped spools with a deep spool. (since I use XT) I could not be more pleased, with any blank or reel.

Flyfishing for smallmouth
Fly fishing is great, no shame in it! For what it's worth (since I'm in central Tx., south of most good smallie water) I catch most of my smallies on big clouser type flies in white, with either a few strands of blue or a red collar and the better smallies have come on big Lefty's Decievers. (white body with blue upper and a few strands of peacock herl on top) I'm fishing a lake, though. I don't throw many craw type flies in freshwater... when I want to fish slow, I have a BC rod in hand. But I have caught some smallies on a shrimp pattern I was testing before a trip to the coast. I used to do a lot of tying (now just occasionally) and my best tip to a new tyer is to tie your flies sparse. We always try to put too much into them. Most patterns look better in the water when left sparse. Best tip #2, learn to tie a quick easy mono weedgaurd. It will save you tons of flies.

Prison reform?
Muddy, My observations are pointed at the many people released that have NOT been hepled or rehabilitated. The news only reports the "news worthy stuff" but that doesn't change the high numbers of repeat offenders. Even if the percentages are low, the number is still shockingly high. My observations were only intended at VIOLENT, SEXUAL and CHILDRENS related criminals. You and your friend are a perfect example of a guys who paid his debt to society and should move on into society. Why did you bring religion into this thread?
-
Prison reform?
I certainly hope that's just a casual observation and not a justification for early release or early release without rehabilitation. Our courts are already severely backed up, police and prison gaurds are understaffed and overworked (at least in my own state) and I don't even want to get started on the drug war.... I don't care if my taxes double, I'm not willing to sacrifice the safety of my family, friends and the population at large so we can "keep job security" for many that are already overworked. For the few that might actually see a job cut, it's cheaper and easier to retrain them (at full wages) for another career than to hunt down all the criminals and rebuild the lives of the victims left in the wake. Our police are busy enough with 1st time offenders. Let's not forget that police, judges, prison guards, support staff and court employees are already paid with our tax dollars so any financial impact would be minimal in the grad scheme of things. Construction employees are in demand all over the place and every lawyer I have talked to has more than enough business than to give me an appointment in less than a couple weeks time.

Rod ratings chart ?
short answer: That's correct. It's all based on someone's perception. longer answer: Some companies are wildly different in spinning vs. casting rods plus don't get fooled by the differences in a rod's action. Many of the IMX rods are closer in action to other company's X-fast so they might seem heavier since the backbone starts further up the rod. (and that is one attribute of a spin jig rod) And some just use a lighter tip than others which will feel different even if the tapers are comparable Other things also play into it but aren't worth a page of type to explain subtle diff's. No 2 companies rate power or action the same. Some are closer than others but this is why it's so tough to buy stuff online if you haven't held/used it before.

What line for an "all-around" casting setup?
flechero, I believe Suffix Seige is in the blue box, Eite is in the red box. Anyway, I recommend 10 or 12 lb. Suffix Elite. you are correct, posts edited.

Cold Weather...What LB Line To Use?
Sorry for the mix up, I always say the wrong one. ...lol I actually like the red box better. It handles better and seems just as tough in the rocks and trees. I know that sounds odd but I couldn't say that one was tougher based on my own experience. But since we are talking winter time, red box IS the softer of the two. Sorry for the mix up. Now in the interest of fairness, my regular partner used the blue box Suffix year round and won't even try the red box. Bottom line is that Suffix makes 2 great mono's, I just think the red box is a better winter time choice.

The smile says it all. Great stuff!

Is this wrong?
Gene, I've been up front and honest, even with the smallies, you sand bagger!!!! ;D

Cold Weather...What LB Line To Use?
A few things..... Yo-Zuri #6 and #8 are basically the same strength so on spinning tackle use #6 since it's a smaller dia. and is better behaved. Secondly, are you using hybrid or hybrid ultra soft? That will make a big difference. I have a slightly different opinion than Roadwarrior on Y-Z. I used Y-Z a little over the last 2 winters and even though it was less affected by cold than XT, I still didn't like it in the cold. It was not the answer for me. For this time of year, I use Suffix Elite (red box) it's well mannered, good handling, surprisingly abrasion resistant and it doesn't stiffen up nearly as bad as XT or Yo-Zuri in the cold weather/water. I love XT in the warm weather. When it warms up, I go almost exclusively to XT. Braid might be an option but cold clear waters and braid rarely go well together. I personally don't like it but that's just my experience.

What line for an "all-around" casting setup?
For this time of year, I would use #12 Suffix Elite (red box) it's well mannered, good handling, surprisingly abrasion resistant and it doesn't stiffen up like XT or Yo-Zuri in the cold weather/water. I love XT in the warm weather. When it warms up, I'd go to #10 or #12 XT, depending on what you fish most often.

Why we should all carry.
So true. Sadly, a great majority of people don't understand that. You never hear the "good" stories in the media, but lawful carry has saved a lot of people, most w/o ever firing a shot. The mere presence of a firearm will deter the statistical majority of aggressors. I have a couple of new CC holsters being made for Christmas, customs of course!!

Technique Specific Rods ?
wats u meen? i thot we frens? Sorry, BM, I'm trying to get them to buy one outrageously priced combo of each power so the cash outlay exceeds the "multiple" BPS combos of each type. How about I buy some Gold Cermets to make up for the misunderstanding?

Beginner Swimbait Reel
Bizz, Thanks for the response- I see your point about LP reels but until someone can wear out or break a Revo with a swimbait, I'll consider it in a different class than other LP reels. Of course I'm not a hudd chucker and neither was the original poster. ...lol Thanks

Fishing heavy cover - braid vs. heavy mono
Thank Reelmech, he posted that warning in the past. (a few times I think) I screwed up a reel by locking the drag down and thumbing it to break the old spiderwire. I returned the reel under warranty and then bought another spool of XT to replace the braid. : ...lol

Technique Specific Rods ?
Well put, like DG and a lot of others, I have more rods than I'll disclose here. ...lol I have always used about 3-5 of them 'regularly'. The rest I carry in certain lakes, situations or times of the year. You can make do with as many or few as you want. Deck space and # of people in the boat play a big role in my decision making. I also agree with dodgeguy- a rod company label means nothing. what I call technique specific means, for example, my 846 x-fast is my buzzbait rod, 365 days a year. I have a 5C70HF St. Croix that's a dedicated C-rig rod... has been that and only that since the day it was built. etc., etc., etc. They would work well for other stuff but I have plenty of rods and for my own preferences, they work exactly how I want/need for specific techniques. Don't get hung up thinking you need technique specific stuff... Most of my rods ended up being specific after I used them a while, not because I built them to serve certain roles. A 7' H, fast will work great for about 60% of what I do so to have a bunch of technique specific rods only means I need several rods that are the same power and action, know what I mean? It won't make sense for a lot of people to own multiples.

Fishing heavy cover - braid vs. heavy mono
Careful... this can easily bend the spool shaft. You need to wrap on an oar or cleat or something. And when the hook straightens or breaks, watch out, I had a windshield break from impact of a worm weight in that scenario, during my brief braid useage.

Fishing heavy cover - braid vs. heavy mono
I'm opposite. I MUCH prefer mono to braid, for any situation, with any technique. One thing that will happen is that you'll get hung up a lot. You can break mono if you need to without much risk of damage to your rods and reels, but good mono like XT will hold up to the nastiest of cover with a little care and common sense . You are using short casts (or pitches) for those techniques so you don't need the "extra" sensitivity of braid. Close range hooksets risk rods & dig braid into itself and beyond that I just prefer mono. I never had trouble feeling bites. I did use braid several years ago, tried it for about 2 months and was never able to get comfortable with it. I broke some equipment and had a few bad experiences. For me braid was a solution to a problem that didn't exist, well actually it created other problems.

Beginner Swimbait Reel
A question for the real active swimbait guys- what does a cardiff have that the revo S doesn't? Cardiff has 1.5" slower line recovery rate. Revo has big drag advantage. Seriously, what am I missing? Thanks. (sorry for the potential hijack)
