  1. The only issue I had with it (12 lb test) was knot strength. Went to 5 wraps and it got better. Never tried a palomar knot. Still, I don't use it any longer.
  2. Convert a motorcycle trailer. They work great.
  3. That's what I use graphite for.
  4. If you can swing it, about a hundred bucks for a new sonar will get you started fine for a starter setup. Or keep your eyes open for a used unit. If not the above post nails it. Did it that way for a quite a while.
  5. Get the Y bones out, and HELL YES! If it's a small one, it's often easier to just remove the whole strip of meat with the Y bones inside it. You don't really lose that much. You wind up with two long skinny filets.
  6. I would venture to guess the Zebco 33 has accounted for several thousands of bass. My wife's 5 pounder came on a zebby. Are they my #1 choice? No, but they are far from worthless as long as they are of reasonable quality.
  7. Bill is effective 90-95% of the time for us!
  8. If I don't know what I'm getting into, 8 or 9. If I have a good idea, I take 5. Usually I'll use 2 or 3.
  9. I like the C rig for those kind of situations where you are dragging bottom to cover water and find structure and bottom composition. I prefer to throw T rigged worms at "targets" like laydowns, stumps, etc. Hard to go wrong with green watermelon or pumpkin.
  10. Same. Only mine was purple and it seemed like it had beaded chain molded in the middle that the hooks attached to. It was about 40 years ago, so...I might be "misremembering".
  11. Almost always thumb it unless I'm trying to cast a big crank a long ways, then just at the end.
  12. Yes, they are flat. The rivets might scratch them but I've had them on for 3 years and they are still quite serviceable.
  13. Use the skinny weights. It helps a lot in weeds. Also, do not "cast" it works best if the line's going out at less than a 45 degree angle, IMO.
  14. If you have a lake that has very clear water, give them a try...
  15. How deep was the fish caught? 4 feet of water Did the lure contain rattles or have hinges? No Was the lure a natural color (brown, green) or was it an unnatural color (chartreuse, orange)? Chartreuse and Blue If possible, what moon phase was your PB caught during? Unknown. It was August the 3rd at 3 in the afternoon.
  16. Eagle claws or any type of cross lock. Can't stand speed clips for the reason you mentioned. Hint, if you get the 6 inch steel or titanium leaders you can cut the loops and get some smaller lighter snaps. Don't worry about the breaking strength if you are using 10 or 12 lb test. Use them until you feel they are compromised, clip off and toss. You can use the small barrel swivels for dropshotting.
  17. Not saying that "all of the manufacturers say" isn't correct, but I've never seen any such thing myself. Nor have I noticed any difference on any bait over about 1/2 oz and definitely not on any bait like a 3-6 XDs or any other "deep diver" cranks unless it's something with a very narrow bill. I haven't notice any difference between round split rings and the oval shaped ones. I don't like snaps as much on small Bagley's and other light squarebills. I don't generally use the light ones. All mine are 1/2 oz on up. I don't use them on lipless because I think there's a vibration difference and I do feel they dampen the action a little. From Kevin VanDam’s Bass Strategies Revised Edition. Page 100. “Snaps: There are anglers who advocate tying all lures direct, but I’m not one of them. I use snaps on most of my crankbaits, spoons and sub-surface lures, although I tie topwaters, jigs and soft plastics to the line. Anglers claim that snaps will break or come undone, but I’ve never experienced any of those problems. I use a snap because it allows me to change baits quickly, and more importantly, I think it enhances lure action. Now, I don’t use snap ‘swivels’ because they add too much weight to the front of the lure and they stifle lure action. I use Berkley Cross-Lok snaps in 75-pound strength for most of my hardbait attachments. I’ve never had a problem with them, although I do change often. The wire clasp will lose its strength if you open and close it often, so I don’t take any chances.” I don't use the 75lb one's either. I use the smallest lightest cross locks that I can find. Maybe that makes a difference, I don't know. Their breaking strength is still higher than my line, so I don't worry about it at all. I use them for a few trips and toss them. I realize KVD doesn't directly address the split ring issue but it does leave no doubt that the man himself uses snaps.
  18. Also, do not be afraid to let it more or less straight down over the side when it's windy like that and just let it tick along the bottom as the wind takes you. It can be very effective.
  19. and the XCS in Foxy Lady. I have KILLED with that this year.
  20. Flys, beetle spin and gulp 1 inch minnow.
