  1. I think PQ's are one of the best of not the best budget reel you can get when they have the sales. It's the same platform as Abu or Lews reels. I have one around that's like 5 years old and still works fine. It is a bit geary now from abuse but I am not sure there is a reel that won't eventually start to do that over time. During the spring sale they have my brother bought a PQ 7' MH combo for $80 I think. The rod is a pos and you can hardly feel anything with it but when you don't have a rod and reel that's a amazing deal.
  2. I used to dropshot a ton but for some reason hardly did any this year. For weights I don't really use any thing over 1/4 ever really. I set my length appropriate to the height I need to keep it up out of the slime and garbage on the bottom. I like to go about 12-18" but if I have to go a bit higher to not get fouled i will. I am also a fan of those spinshot hooks and sometimes a light wire EWG if I want to t-rig something something like a finesse worm baby brushhog ect. For baits I ise a lot of worms and the occasional creature style. Finesse worms wacky rigged or senkos are always good. I probably use a senko the most. Roboworms works good but I burn right though them as they don't last long at all. I like baby D-Bombs, missel craws, baby sweet beavers. The small flukes nose hooked and those gulp minnows work also. The gulp minnows catch everything and a lot of cats.
  3. The KVD splitring pliers from Wally World have a cutout on them for tuning also. I think they are like $10.
  4. I am not sure is they fish Erie for bass tournaments. I know they do walkeye ones though. If you don't have a boat it could be tuff to fish Erie if your tryng to target bass. The only places I ever fish from shore for bass there is out west across from the islands. The Catawba Port Clinton area is good and you can catch some really nice fish from shore. If they don't have a lot of fishing experience I would try to target everything just to get a sense of all the different bites and techniques. It's kind of a bummer fishing a actual lake from shore and you are super limited in where you can fish. You can throw everything in the book out there and if they are not around your sol. It can make fishing kinda suck and be boring. I can see that being a turn off to fishing if that was the kind of experience people had every time.
  5. my mistake i got confused for a second. The way stuff floats back up is backwards. I was thinking the wrong way.
  6. I think maybe you have the temps they rise at backwards they rise faster in cold then they do in warmer? Isnt it usually the other way around? As to the op there are killer baits. I throw both but having been throwing the jr's more this year and killing them. They can work all year long for me. Jerkbaits are one bait that the extra money can really make a big difference. I am interested in trying the 110+1 or the 110 magnum for walleye. I have a hunch they could outfish husky jerks or rouges.
  7. That are $100 brand new from a retailer not that many. There are quite a lot of models you can find used for about $100 though. A Lews Tourny, I think they are called tournament MB now. Lews BB-Z, shimano citica, or curado. Really I personaly wkukd try to find a used reel and you can find great deals. Today for example I saw someone selling a used Daiwa zillons for $100 and it was in amazing condition. That's a steal right there.
  8. When it's like that it's not unless you want to have a rough time and maybe end up in the drink. Any time it's white capping like that is dangerous. If weather calls for 3-5' waves like it does often then stay home.
  9. I use 10# power pro and wouldn't a thing. They also make a 5# braid that is blue and supposed to be for ice fishing. It is 1# diamater and kinda expensive for what you get.
  10. Spend most of it on a good reel as that is more important then a rod when you have nothing. Don't be afraid to buy a used reel to save some money as long as its not beat on. You could find a nice used reel for $100-120 and it will be a reel you keep forever. Also I guess those berkley rods are fairly decent and tjeu are cheap like $30 or so.
  11. I had never heard that bass can't remember worns. I am not sure how much bass really remeber any ways. So where are these kids fishing at? And how much actual fishing experience do they have? I am also from Ohio so maybe I have fished some of the places. If I was super desprate to get a bite i would go with a drop shot with a worm usually. I like finesse worms or senkos and they also can do double duty T rigged. Of course a inline spinner is also one. A small soft swimbait of some kind. And a small popper for some kind of top water bait.
  12. I am not talking about all the little details to every rod and reel. Just a general overview for people who just have no idea about any of it and are basically new. It would be for people who are basically just starting to really get into it and want to take it more seriously then a $20 combo from Walmart and a dozen worms. It would be a list of basically what to buy to get the most out of your money. It's basically always the same stuff being recommended for these people when they ask. For example what spinning reel to buy for around $50? It's basically always a president ect. Even a list of things like some basic lines to use as that s asked a ton also and never changes.
  13. Well that senko threads works pretty good right? I don't see very many topics about them so I think it might be working. People still fish those things right?
  14. I had said this one before I think but I will say it again. I really do think there should be a sticky that lists quality rods and reels at a few price points for people. I think it would really help when th the topics like what is the best rod for $100 or best $50 spinning reel ect. I think we can all agre on a couple for specific price points for people to reference. It could even be updated periodocly or something with maybe new stuff that comes out.
  15. I accidently jad my reel slip over the side and was sitting in the water while I was unhooking a fish. Even that kinda messed it up and I could tell rght away. I had toa ke it apart and clean it even after that. It just wasn't the same.
  16. I think it is also a reaction strike thing from it gliding or whatever. I just don't believe that fish won't chase down a bait. If that was the case they would all starve. All the stuff they prey on life depends on it so they are tryin to get away at top speed,
  17. Nice! I like it. I thought you said you didn't do good with the 175's or was that the old ones as I see that's a injected. I get way more bits on the 168's even though they are almost as long. It's really because of the massive dofference in girth between them I think. Also I am digging the rash on the slammer. I can see that has caught you a few. Even in cold water I catch them on glides a lot. I personally dot put much into that about cold water so the bait has to move super slow. I am sure it doesn't hurt but these fish will still take off after something if they want it
  18. It doesn't have to cost a bunch of money to fish them. You can actually probably use gear you already have for quite a few of them. You can easily go to a rods max weight rating or beyond on treble hook baits. You can also use a regular feel for baits up to a few ounces and be fine. I used one of my tatulas for the longest time and still would again for baits up to and over 2 ounces. There is also waaayyy cheaper alternatives for rods and reels to use then what you see or hear about. You can get musky or saltwater rods for cheap. For a reel there is nothing wrong with using a Cardiff or millionaire also Abu ambassadours are the deal and can be found cheap. I really don't know why people don't use them more actually and they are literally everywhere. As for lures I know they can be expensive and even cheap ones like $20 is a lot for some people but... You really shouldn't be losing them anyways as your not going to get 50 bites a day and you probably are not going to try and skip it under some branches or jog it around in rock piles and they should last decently long since bites are fewer. If you bait does wear out like soft plastics do then you probably caugjt a good amount of fish and some nice ones so it's worth it. You also don't need 50 swimbaits. Like 5 is really all you need and you could even do good with less like maybe 3. These people have all these baits you see like a tote full of them. Honestly they don't even fish them all and it's kinda a waste usually. You have your baits your good with and have cnfodence so you keep throwing those and slowly work up the ones your not so confident with. It's the dedication part I think that makes people stop throwing them. Really for like $100-150 you could buy a setup to throw bigger baots and snag a couple baots along with it and be good to go.
  19. You have it backwards as do most people. The majority is supposed to make the laws not the minority that think they know what is best for you. Only you can decide what is best for you not some invisable person who has no clue. Freedoms are few are far between these days but we won't get into that. This topic is going to be locked anyways so get it in while you can.
  20. It kinda is. That was what this country was about originally. To say if you break a law you are the same to someone who breaks any other law is crazy. Everyone on here has broken laws and most on a regular basis. I bet everyone was speeding at one point this week or jaywalking or didn't wear a seat belt ect. You can do what you want if it was a real law of it bothered you so. Who is really going to see you throw a fish back anyways. I am not sayin my go out and do anything you want but let's be realistic. No one will ever know. Just like no one will ever know like no one knows you didn't stop for 3 seconds this morning at that stop sign. It was still illegal and you did it any ways. Before anyone says they don't do stuff like I mentioned above I am going to call BS and if by chance you happen to be the perfect person you are 1 in a million.
  21. That's what I was thinking. I didn't know it was 1.5k miles though. I think people are way to worried sometimes about conservation on bass fishing. The mindset that every fish has to go back can actually hurt a fishery more then keeping a select amount. Unless fish are being caught commercially in huge numbers anglers using poles to catch fish 1 at a time will never stop the fish. It could be a good thing to keep fish as I bet the delta is totally choked with fish. People should keep any fish they want as long as it is legal no matter how big it is. The whole thing about releasing it for someone else's to catch is kinda silly. I can agree with that in a pond where there might be 5-10 fish in the whole place like that. But in places with vast amounts of water it probably will never be caught again.
  22. That's pretty wild. But in reality I doubt it's a big deal even if everyone killed every bass they caught in the delta. It would probably take a very long time to really hurt the population as I bet their numbers are insane. It might even start producing even bigger fish f people killed what they caught. I am not a big fan of total eradication but I am for thinning the herd sometimes. We do throw any catfish caught at my mothers in the woods but that is different. I also could care less if some one wants to skin mount a fish. It's a drop in the bucket really.
  23. You should be able to find them close to shore. The bait is starting to move to shore and the walleyes follow. I would assume the bass are also near by. People have been catching the occasional perch or walleye from shore already so the bass have to be around waiting for easy meals.
  24. You need more then 2 cents. I have found at minimum it takes a whole roll of pennies to get the fish going. I usually like to start with 2 rolls and just let the fish tell me if I need more. You don't want to insult the fish gods with a measly 2 cents. It is best to just suck it up and throw the change in to keep the peace and gurantee a great day of fishing.
