  1. Could it possibly be the hooks causing drag? I used a broken hula popper (lip damage) without hooks, so maybe it flew more streamlined?
  2. Nope, it came with a tool to disassemble it though lol. It was one of the first accurist reels, i think i got it 5 or 6 years ago.
  3. I have a Quantum Accurist PT, Shakespeare Ugly Stik Casting rod 6'6" Medium and trilene big game 12lb mono. I tried casting a arbogast hula popper the other day and it went maybe 8 or 9 yards, woohoo. The string is newly spooled, the spool tension knob is mint and i only had four brakes on (minimum before freespool). No backlash at all, just short casting. I havent used it in years, is that normal? Practicing in my yard i can cast wayyyyyyy farther. Haha, first cast was hilarious, but after that i got back into the swing of things.
  4. I don't have any d**n money! I was wondering if any of you had grease & oil you didn't like or want that was collecting dust, or almost empty that you have no use for as I am actively seeking out a job and can't spend the 20$ it will take to buy grease & oil for my quantum bait caster. It hasn't been cleaned in years so i figured now was the time to do it lol. Not begging, just wondering if you have any that's collecting dust, the people on this forum as far as i've seen are very generous so i figured asking wouldn't hurt. Thanks guys either way. I have Phil Wood Grease & Hoppes gun oil here i was going to use, but was told it would do more harm than good to my reel in the end.
  5. I use palomar on anything that isnt rediculously long, for obvious reasons. Or also depending on the test line i use. 10#+ likes the clinch or improved clinch, where as my 8# likes palomar and the clinch's slip. I'll use an albright to attach line, or a snell and whatnot, but those two knots are the main ones i use. I use a rapala also on a few baits.
  6. Have you had any problems with them at all?
  7. Glad to see it gets good reviews. Is one model (older vs newer) better build quality or anything?
  8. Is this kit any good http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_36580____SearchResults? I'm looking to replace both my mouse that got demolished by a rather large snapping turtle and my frog that got torn to shreds by years of use. I had this frog http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_37014____SearchResults for a long while, but i couldn't get a good hookset all the time with it, and the second one i had just sank, where as the first one floated. So i was going to go with a spro or something similar, and saw this kit. The mouse seems to look almost like the chartreuse mouse i had (mouse and frog both bought at walmart 6 or so years ago) so I don't know. Which is why i come to you guys :-). Are they worth it? just the frogs? just the mice?
  9. I like these specific colors -White -Black -Chartreuse -Pumpkin Seed Then, just for my amusement i buy hard baits with different pattern wraps, just for my entertainment mostly lol, the fish don't really care that much.
  10. Ok guys. So, last time i bought braid it was spiderwire stealth and i got it in 12lb (isn't that like 2 or 4lb mono?) when i bought my quantum accurist PT, but when i went to use it, i think the line layed over itself and when i casted it snapped. So after a few snaps i got frustrated and took it off. I want to try braid again. Do I need to buy braid in the same diameter as the mono that I use? I use berkley big game 12lb on my accurist baitcaster, and 8lb spiderwire super mono (6 equiv) on my spinning setup. I like using 6lb diameter mono on my spinning reel and the spiderwire 8lb mono is the same diameter so it works out for me. 0.23mm i believe is the 6lb that my spinning reel lists. i forget what the 12lb is. But anyways, what would be my best bet for preventing problems while getting the strongest line. I don't do a lot of fishing around rocks and stuff, mainly lilly pads or sandy bottoms. I fish both clear and semi dirty waters. Are there any knots that work better than others? I use a polamar knot more often than not. Also, when i put it on the spool, do i have to have a mono backing of a layer or two, or can i just put it straight on? I've heard both. What's the best braid for the money, without breaking my bank. I want to spool up both reels. How long does it last compared to mono as far as abuse and use? I tend to change out my mono ever season. My spinning reel holds a little over 100 yards of 6lb mono, and the accurist i think holds 220 yards but don't quote me.
  11. Hula poppers, spinner baits, buzz baits, jitter bugs, hollow bodied frogs & mice, jigs, crank baits, rapalas, creature hard baits, etc. etc.
  12. I had this happen. it looked like blues were munching on my line. I was fishing a rocky bottom so having frayed line kind of didn't suprise me because it was only in one spot. But when i casted and my frog went flying i started looking at my inserts. Sure enough one was cracked. The rod tip!
  13. I'll let you in on my story. First time buying a baitcaster, bought a shakespeare SKP something or other. it was a barrel baitcaster. Bought a 6'6" 1 piece rod and loved the sensitivity, fact that it won't come apart and it just seemed to have more stability than 2 pieces. Forward 6 years and two other baitcasters of way better quality and i now seek out a 2 piece rod. Reason being, i fish in areas where carrying a 6'6" rod or even fishing with one is like walking through a doorway with your arms out. It's difficult to walk through the woods or cast in confined areas. If i could i would have both a 2 piecw 6' M and a 6'6" 1 piece MH, both casting rods. Or even a 7' MH 1 piece. Just do a lot of thinking as to where youre going to fish, if youre going to walk to some spots or whatnot. If they're all open areas and you drive to them invest in a good 1 piece, but if you travel or walk to spots and whatnot, get a 2 piece, or better yet, get a 1 and 2 piece.
  14. How good are these reels? I've had one for years but i've really only casted it in the yard. It's been on the water once, but since i do a lot of hiking to my fishing spots i mainly just pack a spinning reel with a 2 piece rod. Is this a decent baitcaster? It hasn't been serviced, but i figured since it hasn't been on the water theres no need to lube or clean it. It's been used a total of maybe 3 or 4 hours over the years total, maybe up to 6 total hours used. It's not that i can't use it or that i don't like it, i just can't fit it into my fishing. If i had a 2 piece casting rod it would get used a ton, but i don't have the money for that. Here are a few pics so you know which one i'm talking about. It's an AC501PT. Should i get it serviced or service it myself, or only after i use it good for a few months? Any other hints or advice would be great.
  15. Here's some info i found on it. http://www.***.com/Koppers_Live_Target_Hollow_Body_Frog/descpage-KLTHBFG.html?large=GRB http://www.maplebassmasters.com/byron-velvick-icast-2010-koppers-frog/
  16. Palomar really is simple. Fold line over about an inch more than the bait or at least large enough to handle if its a hook or something. Put the end of the loop through the eye of whatever, hold both the end of the loop and the tag end of the line, tie an overhand knot where both of your fingers are and pull tight, wet the line and slip the bait through the loop you produced and pull tight.
  17. Anybody fish on the shoreline in CT?
  18. How do I lubricate my reel? I have http://www.hoppes.com/products/lubricating_oil.html for oil and http://www.philwood.com/products/greaseoilhandcleaner/ for grease. Can i use this stuff & if so, where do i apply it? Im a pro at disassembling and maintaining spinning reels, but i've only disassembled and worked on a daiwa baitcaster i got second hand, this quantum is my first expensive baitcaster.
  19. 1. I live in Connecticut 2. I have to say that this year fishing is definately going better than last year. I have learned so much over the past few years that this year i can just set out and know what baits to throw, where to throw them and how to fish them. I'm successful at least with one fish everytime i go out. My tackle box is dwindling down though... lol.
  20. I love the sensitivity and durability of my one piece rod, but one thing i found is that it's difficult to transport if you don't have a truck or you have to walk through the woods. I mainly use two piece rods unless i'm driving to a spot or if the spot is open and not obstructed.
  21. I noticed that the part near the bail wire that the line roller itself sits on had two pieces of graphite that were protruding out that werent supposed to so i took a razor knife and cut them off then sanded smooth with some 600 grit sandpaper. Cleaned it and greased it back up and it's as good as new. thanks guys.
  22. I narrowed it down to the line roller. Sooooo, i guess i'll go ahead and try and fix that!
  23. I follow. Where would I check to see where contact is made or how would i reproduce it in a way that I would be able to view it so maybe i can figure out a way. I'm pretty good at fixing things, i just need to observe them acting up.
  24. If it helps any all of the grease was white except for the grease on the gear that runs along the spool shaft, that was black. Maybe graphite is rubbing off the body into the grease?
  25. Even cheaper shakespeares have been quieter than this one lol.
