  1. I always like letting the larger fish i catch go. Pictures do me just fine, and so do the stories. i think stories are better than the actual fish, it lets peoples imaginations do the picturing :-). Great catch, my largest is a 5lber.
  2. Probably two on either side of the handle, one in the shaft gear, one under the worm gear and one in the line roller lol. I guess you pretty much have it covered! I doubt theres any bushings that will make the reel feel cheap, all those areas are the important areas. More bearings on the handle shaft just create a better load bearing surface. Get some confidence and tear into that thing! If you need help feel free to PM or email me, or if you have AIM i can help you on there too.
  3. grinding i'd guess would be a bearing or gear issue. Just clean the entire thing, you'll appreciate it. It may be slow in the beginning until everything breaks in. Also, if the reel has bushings, you can replace them with a good bearing and increase the value/smoothness of the reel. I've done this with cheap shakespeares/mitchell's and they're amazing now.
  4. I find spinning reels extremely simpl.e I've disassembled quantum, shimano, shakespeare, mitchell, spidercast & daiwa and they're all relatively the same. Even salt water reels are mainly the same, I've done abu garcia and shimano in those. Just do certain parts at a time. For example, remove the bail as one part then reassemble. Move down and disassemble the spool area, then remove the sideplate and work on the gears & ottom I grease emy bearings because unlike a baitcaster a spinning reel doesn't use bearings to cast, just to reel in, I feel it saves wear and tear. I even go as far as removing/disassembling the drag top to the spool.
  5. do a google search for how to tie trilene knot. It's like a sophisticated clinch knot mix.
  6. I used to cast right, and reel right. But one day i was thinking about it and it just didnt make sense. I cast right, then switch the rod over to my left hand (non dominant). I made myself learn to reel lefty, and now it's all i use. it makes more sense, i can instantly set the hook and i can work baits better with my right hand.
  7. x2. He is shimano trained.
  8. That's why i recommended epoxy.
  9. So i have a spidercast spinning reel. I got some of the berkley fireline fused braid and i read on the box "ideal for spinning reels". So, i took off some of my mono (same diameter, 8lb) and tied the braid to it. I got a few knots today that i had to cut out, and it doesnt slide across the bail so sometimes i dont notice when i flip the bail and reel in, and it spools up on the spool itself and not where the line sits. It's #20, which has an 8lb diameter. I went through probably 10-13 feet today due to the knots and stuff. I came home, tore off the spiderwire super mono #8 and got the spool back out and put a decent bottom layer of the mono on, then tied the braid on with an alberto. I'm going to try this again! I had exactly enough braid, and now have barely any mono (i was running out before, which is why i did it this way). Should i see a difference? I didnt realize how little braid i had on before, i could cast out and reel in 15 or so feet of mono before i got to the braid. It casts all right i guess, i love the sensitivity. Is the reel able to handle braid? I figured since it had the spiderwire spider on it that it was made to be used with spiderwire, which is also a braid.
  10. maybe some lube got onto your drag disks? Or like someone suggested, the line is slipping around the spool.
  11. JB weld should be fine, but i think that comes in black/gray, right? The 5 minute epoxy should be fine. It sets up in 5 minutes, but takes 24 hours to harden fully. And most of them are clear.
  12. I've replaced many eyes. What you need to get is this: -Replacement rod tips -2 part epoxy -Torch Turn the torch on and grab a pair of pliers. Don't touch the torch to your rod, but what you want to do is get it close enough (few inches) to heat up the rod tip, which will then heat up the epoxy/glue thats under it. Use the pliers to pull it off. This will also keep the thread and epoxy under the eye from getting messed up, and will look flawless in the end. Mix up a bit of the two part epoxy. Oh! before this, sand the metal piece the tip sits on on the rod to clean it & prevent slippage. I had to sand mine down to make the tip fit, but once the epoxy is on you cant tell the difference. Now, mix a little box of the epoxy on cardboard or something. Put it on the metal piece sticking out of the rod, put some in the rod guide and put the guide on. Eye ball it. Now, take the rod and look down it from both the reel seat and the tip and line it up with the other guides. Do your best, just make sure youre holding the rod straight lol. Now when it's good, take a bit more of that epoxy and put it over the guide and the rod to fill the seam & create a strong bond. All done! Let it dry a day. Mine's held up to 5 lbers, and its a cheapie shakespeare 5'6" light rod :-). The guide i took off another rod that snapped and it had a stainless steel insert. You should be fine. If you're replacing a rod guide other than the tip, buy some thin braid and buy a guide. Get some superglue, glue the tip of the braid to the rod and start wrapping the guide on. Do the same on both top and bottom of the guide. Then epoxy.
  13. Theres a screw that took me a while to find on my quantum. It's kind of a screw. It's the top rod to the line guide on the reel. It's thin and spans the entire reel, the guide runs along it. It's on the opposite side of the handle.
  14. I'd recommend cleaning the entire reel. You'll learn about it, make it mint again and use up some spare time (if you have any). It's really not difficult. i had my entire quantum accurist PT apart with no schematics. Well, i had them on my computer, but didnt use them. What i did was once i got inside, i took quadrants of the reel apart. I cleaned the right side first (non handle side for me) and did all that stuff, left the bayonet off and the spool out. Then took the left cover off and went to work. I did all the bearings i could see and put them back, then took the parts out piece by piece and layed them out how they went. i then went backwards cleaning and lubing until i worked my way back up to the top piece (first piece i took off, last to put on). Just need to be systematic. I do it like that for my spinning reels too, one section at a time. If you end up with any extra parts for your parts bin, you can either look at the positive and say you have extra pieces or look at the negative that you have to take it apart again haha. The handle i had layed out with the cap, then nut, then handle, drag, washers and so on and then grabbed em in order. You can do it! If you can, get better grease & oil and make it worth your while. I wouldn't want to do that everyday...
  15. I've never been able to catch anything on a mepps or similar lure. How did they do?
  16. Well, i used to do a lot of trout fishing when i was younger. Then i got into bass fishing and decided i would like to try baitcasters. So i bought a shakespeare SKP-3000 round to get started and quickly wanted more quality, so i got the quantum. I hadn't used it in years because the rod isnt the easiest to pack away and i ride my bike or walk to a lot of spots, so fitting in a backpack was a must. I don't like two piece casting rods, but may have to breakdown and buy one at some point. I've noticed some lures dont cast far or have good action on some setups. Didn't know if it was the rods action, line size or reel gear ratio. I also at one point a month ago only had a light rod that i could use and the tip was busted so i replaced it myself from a rod that had snapped. The rod that snapped was a 2 piece 7' med action shakespeare excursion, but a HUGE pickerel put an end to that pole. It was originally the mitchell avocet II silver series with that rod & spiderwire super mono ez #10. That was a good all around setup because the tip was whippy enough to cast light stuff but had enough stiffness for different types of fish. And after i tuned that cheap reel up it was amazing.
  17. I inherited my spinnerbaits so i don't know the weights of them. I know i prefer the light for worms and such, and the med. light for poppers and rapalas, although i like the popper on my medium baitcaster. I was just wondering if any of my gear isn't really suitable for bass fishing or my lures. Like i said, i kind of just grab a rod and go, i more so match my line to what i'll be fishing.
  18. I have to admit, casting a larger spinnerbait and reeling it in on the light or med. light feels like if i hook a bass theres going to be 80 lbs on the line and it's going to break lol, tons of resistance. But i've caught em on both before. With the baitcaster it feels like theres barely a dent on the end of the line.
  19. Ok guys, so i have four rods. I was just watching a video on here about spinnerbait fishing and one of the tips was not to use spinning gear with spinner baits. News to me! Now i'm wondering, what all my poles would be good for as far as baits because i've always used a "one size fits all" approach to fishing. Oops! Here's my gear: -Quantum Accurist PT baitcaster with #20 berkley fireline fused original in smoke braid on a 6'6" 1 pc med. ugly stik -Light 5'6" shakespeare rod with 10lb spiderwire super mono xxx in clear on a mitchell avocet silver series spinning reel -Silstar combo spinning reel with 6lb mono (probably med. action) -Spidercast spinning reel on a daiwa 7' med light rod and 8lb spiderwire super mono xxx. I have spinnerbaits, plastics, a jig, rapalas, poppers, jitterbug and a few other random hardbaits. My heaviest stuff is the spinnerbaits. lightest is probably worms.
  20. Read this article, it's an interesting read. http://lacrossetribune.com/news/local/article_9b8d7648-ac12-11df-85e7-001cc4c03286.html
  21. -Quantum Accurist PT Left Hand -Shakespeare Ugly Stik Casting 6'6" Medium -(Was) Berkley Big Game #12 Clear (Now) Berkley Fireline Fused Original Smoke #20 I have spinning setups too but they aren't worthy of mention right now. No pics either, maybe later.
  22. I did look at it. Glad everything worked out for you also. That pack of penn stuff was pretty cheap! Wish the hot sauce was
  23. I woke up this morning and decided i was going to just use my baitcaster. Took the spinning rod out of my backpack that i use to haul gear and threw the reel in there. My setup is: -1 Piece Shakespeare Ugly Stik 6'6" Medium -2001/02 Quantum Accurist PT Left hand -Berkley Fireline Fused Original #20 with #12 berkley big game backing So i set off through the woods. Let me tell you something. Whoever says tuning a reel whether it's a shimano, quantum or diawa won't make a difference, YOU'RE WRONG. The hot sauce .RM. gave me was the ticket to my success mainly. My reel is so smooth now. And after casting out a ton of times the braid settled down and now instead of feeling like sandpaper, it feels somewhat like mono. Or maybe i'm just getting used to it... either way on to my point. If you're kind of iffy with a baitcaster, do what i did it will improve your casting abilities a ton if you're going to want to have fun. I casted all right, but would switch over to my spinning reel for lighter tackle. Today i was throwing weightless worms from shore 25 or so yards out, that's pretty far for me. I did a little practicing in the yard yesterday and could cast a #7 rapala floater the same distance with my quantum as i could with my spinning gear, on the same diameter line. I love the feel of my baitcaster with the lighter lures. I think i've decided to stick the spinning stuff away for now, until i need it for trout or long hikes. This was also my first time in about 7 or so years that i used braid, and i love the stuff! Hooked on it.
  24. I just stripped down and cleaned my 9 year old quantum accurist this week. It's awesome now. It's performance tuned but i saw not a drop or color of red in there (quantum hot sauce was supposed to be in there). .RM. was kind enough to send me both oil and grease hot sauce as well as answer my question as to why there was no hot sauce in there. He said they put thick grease in there to protect in shipment and stuff. I probably won't have to clean it for a while now that good stuffs in there. What did you use?
  25. I've found using braided line helps also. I get much farther casts since i've switched to braid. Birdsnests are easier to pick out and the line seems to be more manageable and sits flatter, probably because theres memory hence no loops to make a mess. Good luck!
