  1. Hold the rod parallel and lob it. Never behind your head. Give it a little upsweep towards the end. I started with the reel on its side facing me. Practice. Some of your problemmay be in the way you hold it and the rods pisition.
  2. I just did the same thing... 3rd time using it. What i did, before asking here lol, was disassemble the whole thing and clean it out and regrease it. I rinsed it with fresh water when i got home but it didn't sit well with me. I now know every single part on my reel, it's regreased with quality grease and i know my 25$ walmart mitchell reel is actually simple and solid internally, which makes me feel a bit better on my purchase. Simplicity is better for me anyways.
  3. I don't know if i have the courage to disassemble it. I've had it for years but only used it a number of times. I mainly used my shimano spinner and diawa baitcaster. I want to use the quantum, but like i said, i saw no visible grease so i didn't want to ruin anything.
  4. Well, i decided to disassemble it again. Had every piece out of it and apart. The reel is extremely simple, more simple than my shimano. I cleaned all the grease off (i realized you aren't supposed to mix greases...) and reassembled it with some phil wood grease, i don't know if any of you are famaliar with that stuff. I got it when i worked in the bike shop. Anyways, all is good now, i'm pretty comfident in this cheap reel now that it's been disassembled, there are virtually no plastic parts in it. I'm really suprised. Thanks for the help!
  5. Where do i lube this reel up? It's lightly used as ive mainly been fishing little streams for trout lately. I have no money for the hotsauce so what do i use and where? I see no lube anywhere i look when i remove the spool and sidecover. Good or bad? If its just supposed to be lubed internally then its fine, if not then yeah...
  6. When i switched to baitcast i tried righties in the shop but they seemed like i would be unproductive. So i bought a lefty quantum accurist pt , along with a 6'6" one piece ugly stik. Love that setup.
  7. I loosened up the nut and just snugged it doen and its the same. Maybe its just the reel? The grease is the same consistency as antiseptic ointment almost. Its not sticky and binding.
  8. The water had all kinds of thingsin it.itdefinately got put together correctly and i used finih line grease, its used for pools and spas. I use it on my bike. Its not a thick hrease at all.
  9. Hey everyone. I just recently had to replace a shimano reel that i had for a while along with the shimano rod. They both finally crapped out. I had 50$(limited funds right now...)and decided i needed a pole for opening day so i went and bought a new rod and reel. I bought a 7' two piece shakespeare excursion medium action spinning rod and a mitchell avocet II silver series spinning reel with some spiderwire super mono ez line. I hooked the whole setup up and went fishing for 3 or so hours. Loved the setup. Went 2 days later to the same spot and as i was walking along the bank it crumbled due to recent flooding(i couldnt see it was eroded underneath, just a 1 foot area... weird)and decided to ditch the rod setup and jump for a tree that had fallen over in the water. Made it onto the tree and realized i had thrown the pole! OH NO! So, i retreived the pole and continued to fish. I got home, sprayed down the reel with fresh water and disassembled it. Sprayed it out with an air compressor and regreased everything. Now it's all dry and greased. My question is, when i spin the handle and let it keep spinning it spins and them comes to a stop, while my brother shakespeare(crappy)spins and spins and spins at a million miles an hour. Is there a reason why? I reassembled it correctly and fished for about 3 hours today also, so is there something up with it or does it need breaking in? Could i have put the part that the bail and spool attach on too tightly with the nut? I didnt crank it down but just snugged it and went an 8th turn more, didnt strip it. I like the reel so far, just wondering if it needs breaking in or if it sounds like something may be up.
  10. I fish an area that is mostly unfished. There are pickerel, LM bass and trout and some sunnies. Not many frogs this time of the year and not many bugs either. The water is maybe 3-4' deep on one side and maybe 5' on the other side of the bridge. It pools in the end and that is probably 8-9' deep, semi clear water. Some parts you can see the rocks, some of it is dark due to trees and not much sunlight. It's going to be 60's this week, partly sunny and breezy. I have poppers, spinners, rapalas, plastics and my buddy brings live bait. What are some techniques for this type of situation? I can catch them pretty well, but it's mainly guess work on my part, trying what i know has worked in the past. Just didn't know if there was a method to fishing conditions like this.
  11. So far i see mixed reviews. Thanks for your input so far.
  12. Wish i could get another shimano. And i fish half the week sometimes. Depends on how busy i am.give or take 16 hours a week or so.
  13. Is it about the same build quality as mine? I like the reel after a few hours of using it but i know nothing about the reel model or company. The quantum i saw wasnt very impressive build wise ans im not a big fan of shakespeare reels. So i chose mitchell.
  14. Hey guys, It was opening day here and I blew up my Shimano last year! Needed a new reel. So I only had a limited amount of dough to buy a new setup with. I bought this: fishmitchell.com/products/reels/avocet%C2%AE-ii-silver-series . A Mitchell Avocet II Silver series in the 10 lb option. Did i pick a decent reel? I mainly target bass and trout. I just want to know if it will last me and if it was worth the 24$ i paid for it. I know it's not top of the line, but is it decent?
