Best gear ratio for....
If this will help, I use 6.2:1 reels on medium rods and that and up to 8.5:1 on my MH fast tip rods. Many anglers in to a lot of crankbaiting prefer speeds lower than 6.2:1 on the medium rods. Everyone has a their own preference. In my water it is plastics heavy fishing, hence fast reels.

Reel Decisions
The great thing about Shimano: lots of interchangeable parts between many of their baitcast reels.

Spinning Reels with a Spare Spool
I bought my Shimano Stradic 10 years ago and at least at that time it came with a spare spool. It is a 4000 size and I believe it would bring in a whale..incredible spinning reel.

Skeet Reese Rod Sale?
Skeet Reese really likes them.LOL

What is your favorite baitcast reel?
Yep, the new SVS braking system requires oiling the brass brake cylinder periodically to keep the noise at bay. Shimano will also tell you frequent oil on the drum keeps the brake shoes from wearing. If they squeak I oil and no squeak no oil. Not a big deal to do, Pop the cover and a wipe around the brass cylinder with an oiled QTip and good to go.

What is your favorite baitcast reel?
Problems with Shimanos? I admit I am a Shimano junkie with 100B's 11 years old and subsequent Curados and Chronarchs to date, except the Curado "G" and wish I could hear what the problems are. My 100B's have hundreds of hours on them and still fish like the day I took them out of the box and nothing has needed to be replaced on them, as is the case with the rest of my inventory. I do maintain my own reels. With regard to skipping a baitcaster, I hope you realize that it requires resetting your brakes and cast control cap and hours of practice. Even then the pros confess that it is a backlash high risk technique with a baitcaster.

Cabelas Sale Coming
Just got an email from Cabelas and the President spinning reel will be marked down 50% for black Friday. Geez, that is a really good deal.

Any experience with the pro qualifier2?
I am a Shimano lover, but 5 years ago walked into one of BPS's big sales and picked up a ProQualifier on sale for $78 just for kicks. I put Sufix 832 50lb on it and used it for frog fishing each year and was really impressed with the reels performance. I would describe it as a real husky, dependable little reel with which I never had a problem. I cleaned and lubed it myself and found nothing mysterious about the internals, pretty much the baitcast reel arrangement. Last year the lure of the Chronarch MGL came calling and I was given $50 for it on the reel trade in program. Would I ever buy another one...in a heart beat. Great little reel.

Are 5:1 Reels Becoming Extinct?
I read an article in Bassmaster I think at least 5 or so years ago wherein Denny Brauer said he had gone to a one speed reel inventory ( and I do not recall the speed he picked) for all applications and just adjusted his cranking speed accordingly. For a pro I thought that was interesting.

Time to replace my braid

Buying rods online
Just read that item and noticed Krol was convicted for selling counterfeit to Universal Mania.

Buying rods online
I can only say I bought my new Humminbird Helix7 from them last summer and the service was first class. They beat BPS price by $500 with free shipping and fast. I even received a follow up email asking me if I was satisfied with their service. On another site where they are a one of many sponsors, I have read where numerous anglers have purchased from them and still do with no complaints. Be sure comments are on the same organization because they are still alive and well.

My Curado K XG Arrrived
Well, my Curado K got its workout on the Potomac and what a little gem. I found the same situation as with the Curado 70 and the Chronarch MGL in that the cast control had to be tightened more than it seemed usual, but after I did that, no problem. I spooled it with 15lb InvizX and mounted it on an old Galyans 6'6" MH Titanium rod (an incredible rod that can handle anything). I have and it was a good marriage. I threw Senkos, etc. all day with it. Some have reported that the outside brake dial was so tight on their reel that it was near impossible to turn, but mine is just fine in all respects.

My Curado K XG Arrrived
And I want to thank the great reviews on that little bugger. As I said in another post they saved me a loooong drive to hold one. Cleaned the bearings first thing and they have their Yellow Rocket Fuel, now it is off to the river on Wednesday. I spooled it with 15lb InvizX from my 1000yd spool from Amazon for $89. love that stuff because it has a diameter of .013", which is the same as other Flouros in 12lb.

Whopper Plopper rod help
I use a 7' BPS Carbonlite MH fast tip for the 90 and 110 with 14lb Excel mono. Seems to work well with no problems.

Baitcast spool slipping
Being the cheap skate I am, all my reels (spinning and bait cast) have inexpensive 10lb mono on them for backing to save on the expense of good line. I use a little Berkley line counter to balance the backing amount to leave the right amount of space for the good stuff. The backing stays on for ever.

Curado K - Initial Thoughts & First Trip
Well, you answered some questions for me I had regarding my 70XG's compared to the K, which I would have to drive 65 miles to handle. You saved me a 130 mile round trip. Thanks for the review.

Can anyone tell me about the lews super duty
Are you saying there are other reels out there besides Shimano? LOL
- Do Carbontex drag washers 'actually' add more drag?

Bear with me pls, learning curve on mgl spool?
It took me a bit to tune mine in and finally settled with two brakes on and the dial on 3 and throw various plastics at that setting. The last factor was the cast control cap. It seemed unnatural to me to have to tightened it as much as I did to get total control, but it sure did not affect casting distance. I went through the same experience with my Curado 70XG. They are really nice reels. Both reels are on BPS MH 7' Carbonlites with 15lb InvizX.

What to adjust for backlashes
Check for wind. It only takes a light breeze casting into it with a high arc on the cast to cause a backlash. If you want to cast into the wind, keep it really low. I am a wind coward and will do anything to avoid casting directly into the wind/breeze.

travel rod
About 15 years ago I bought a 6'6" MH fast 2-piece Tourney Trail from Cabelas for $80 to take to Florida. That rod is still going strong and is as light, or lighter than anything produced today. I have used the daylights out of it. In retrospect I guess I lucked out because it was a quick buy to stick in the trunk.

Can I use 2 lb. line on a medium reel?
My grandson has a Sahara 2000 and spools it with 6lb mono and it works well.

Best gear ratio for weightless Senkos/Flukes
I will have to look at the 901.

Best gear ratio for weightless Senkos/Flukes
Toxic, my daughter and I were duffing around on the big bed in the Chicamuxen last week and she tied on a #927 Senko she had just bought. I looked at it and thought wow, it looks just like a shad, so told her that since the water was gin clear and there is 12-18' of water above the grass, just throw it out and twitch it back above the grass. First cast, the worm hits the water, the rod goes down and she lands a 6lb8oz on the worm followed by a 2lb 10 minutes later. I had never seen that color before, but it sure worked.
