The Abu Cardinal and the Pflueger President are great reels. They are a little out of your price range, but they are worth every penny.

Solid choice for sure. Vendetta also a possible in that range... The Vendetta is a great rod.

I used the Uni-uni once, but will never again. Because the knot is so big and bulky it gets caught in your guides, causing backlashes from hell, and lost lures flying to sea. I never had a problem with it when I used a leader for about a week.

I use snaps with all hardbaits that I use. Only problem is that sometimes the snap gets caught up in spinnerbait blades/beads, but it's an easy fix.

Many use enough line to go from the rod tip down to the reel. Uni to uni is a good knot when tying braid to mono. Also, which rod are you using (If you don't mind me asking)? I ask because I used to use braid on my plastics rod and never had a problem with setting the hook. Ended up switching to yo-zuri hybrid and I'll recommend it to anyone.

Not a big fan of the body kit, but Vettes are awesome.

My suggestion is to switch to a spinning setup when using plastics. Baitcasters aren't the best at casting light plastics. If you insist on using the reel for plastics, you should keep your thumb on the spool to increase tension.

It's a little long, but I like it!!

The fishing is horrible now. You can catch a couple dinks everyday, but nothing to write home about. About a month and a half ago I caught two four pounders back to back, but the bite has been off since. Fishing in the early spring is a whole different story though. You can catch your fair share of bass and the crappie fishing is incredible.
