  1. I used to set lines for snapping turtles when I was a kid to sell to folks who wanted to eat them. My bait of choice was chunks of frozen bluegill. I caught more than one bass on my lines that had eaten those chunks of bluegill.
  2. If anyone is up to it Fluke and I will be at Perry tomorrow for a few hours in the morning. If anyone wants to get in on a little friendly competition we should be out there by 9:30
  3. DAM Techtan, probably the best light lines I've ever used. I've got th 3.5lb test on my ultralight Mustad Thor and Ultraline. A local camping store sells 1lb spools with up to 11,000 yards of line for $10. It's great line for moving baits. I use Vicious fluoro in 12lb for my finesse jig rod. Any heavier an it has tons of memory but the 12lb seems to do very well and the stuff is super strong and abrasion resistant. Also a big fan of Berkley Nanofil despite all the hate it gets. It's a very technique specific line but the stuff it does well it does way better than any others.
  4. Get the smallest size zip ties you can find and zip tie the skirts on or they'll fall apart pretty soon. I used to fish them a lot before I started pouring my own jigs, caught a lot of fish on them.
  5. What is your favorite top water lure? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?) Xcalibur Zell Pop in Z shad, $10, probably Cabela's or BPS, Megastrike Cavitron,$5.49, 3/8oz black on black, TW, Mike Shaw Slammer hitch or golden shiner, TW, $36.99. Under what circumstances will you throw any type of top water lure? Anytime the water temp is over 50 degrees that I think I should be fishing one. What do you throw when there's vegetation underneath the surface? Wakebait or buzzbait, something loud to draw them out of the weeds. What do you throw when there is duckweed or lily's on top? I hate fishing pads, but for other emergent vegetation I'd be using a Bronzeye frog, Horny toad, or weightless pitboss Are there any top water lures you've tried that you do NOT suggest? Not a fan of the Moss Boss but they will catch fish.
  6. Probably not but if you have more confidence in a red hook (like I do) then switch them, you'll fish the bait better if you have more confidence in it.
  7. Smallies without a doubt. Next time if you're not sure just close their mouth and see if the bottom jaw extends past the eye. If it does it's a largemouth, if it doesn't it's a smallmouth (or spot or basically any of the other subspecies of bass).
  8. Do like J said and put all your fingers in front of the trigger or move your hand back slightly so it comes out between your ring and middle fingers. I've had the same issue a couple times and all I had to do was adjust my grip slightly. A pair of sun gloves acts as a little cushion too and can help a lot.
  9. My bet is your dead fish attracted bugs that those baby bass were trying to feed on and they either got stuck or decided the trap was a good place to hide.
  10. I've had my share of alcohol in my life, and while I may not be over the limit after 2 beers I'm certainly feeling it and could be considered impaired for sure. Different people's bodies handle alcohol differently. I've seen guys that could hardly stand after 2 beers, then I'll never forget the night I dealt with a guy who I thought was a little buzzed, he blew a .402. Most people would have needed to go to the hospital or would have been dead already but being a lifelong alcoholic he was able to stand and have a mostly normal conversation with me. Had he not smelled like a brewery I may have never known he'd had a thing to drink.
  11. I don't think there's really much your parents could do to prevent you from spending money you earned how you see fit (within the law anyways). I'm not going to say you should go behind your parent's back, but if it were me I'd be looking for a friend willing to store my kayak and pretend it was theirs
  12. If it's warm, I'm either barefoot or wearing Crocs. Laugh if you want, they're comfortable, breathable, and they dry quickly, plus they float. If it's cold, Muck Rangers.
  13. Drinking and driving is never ok. He was putting your life, his life, and anyone who he met on the roads lives in jeopardy. I'm not going to pretend I've never done it myself like I'm sure a majority of people have in their lives, but that doesn't make it anymore right. If whoever I'm fishing with wants to enjoy a couple cold ones on the water, that's fine as long as they're not getting falling down drunk. Littering, like drinking and driving, is never ok. I'd have told him to give the empties to me and put them in my tackle bag to be thrown out when we got back to the ramp, which couldn't have happened fast enough if it was me in that situation. Even throwing cigarette butts out the window or out of the boat irritates me.
  14. I'm not sure if it was my first bass but I remember one of the first. I would have been somewhere around 3-5, my dad and I were drifting a rock dropoff with nightcrawlers on jigheads for walleye. I don't remember the bite but I remember it fighting very hard on my little Eagle Claw Featherlite rod and it seemed huge at the time (probably 2-3 pounds in all reality). I don't remember for sure but most likely we kept it since we fished almost exclusively to keep anything we could since we were very poor when I was growing up.
  15. Yeah, I do my best not to bring that side of her out
  16. I've seen a big decrease in the number of fish chasing baits actually with the warm water temps. The fish that are chasing aren't getting the bait very well either. Douglas State Lake is probably the best one for shore fishing, Lone Star and Leavenworth SL are pretty good too. All have lots of fishing piers that hold fish all around them.
  17. Johnny's BBQ 1375 Old 56 HwyOlathe, KS (913) 768-0777 It looks that way. Chris (kanasbassfisher08) is planning a separate one for anyone that wants to fish one at the strip pits. The main one is probably going to be at Perry Lake in September or October. You're more than welcome to join us, it's always a blast even if the fishing isn't always great.
  18. I can attest to the fact this motor is in perfect shape, probably been used 12 times max.
  19. Every one I've ever had does, use it to your advantage by running it into things.
  20. Just looked it up and it's 14", how is that even possible to catch 3 bass weighing less than 1.5 pounds?? Most of our lakes are 15" and we had a new record low weighed in one night with a 1.14lb fish, but that would be over twice what those fish would average.
  21. Put a heavier weight sinker or jig on. Cast at the likely areas and get your hop or two in before you reel in and hit the next spot.
  22. I've got a bunch of LC RC series baits but rarely fish them anymore. They're great baits but with most of the lakes I fish having zebra mussels in them anymore I'm too worried about losing them.
  23. Gamakatsu wide gap finesse in 1/0 or 2/0 aaaand scene
