  1. I once saw this demonstrated on one of my local lakes. My wife and I had been catching decent fish on the edge of a long point, using Crigged and Trigged plastics, and jigs. A young guy pulled in and started fishing the edge on the other side of the point. He started throwing a deep crank and burning it back as fast as he could turn the crank. I said to my wife "there is no way he is going to catch anything at that speed." : The words were barely out of my mouth when he caught his first fish. I don't remember how many he caught, but he put on quite a clinic for us.
  2. Fat-G as I mentioned on another thread, the only way to compare tackle IMO is to handle it yourself. I have never fished with or even handled any Powel rods. I am sure they are high quality rods. How they compare to Extremes or PQs I can't say. I have fished with a variety of name brand rods, and for the money I believe these rods can't be beat.
  3. It depends on what you want to use them for. For spinnerbaits/chatterbaits, jerkbaits, top water including frogs and buzz baits, or other reaction type lures, I think the Extremes are just fine. For plastics, jigs, and other contact type baits I will buy the PQs from now on. The Extremes are OK for these applications, but the PQs are better IMO.
  4. Well said. RW we don't always agree on tackle, but on this we are in complete accord. 8-)
  5. I have five Extremes and one 7' PQ MXF. The PQ is easily my favorite rod. As Daniel said, it is lighter than the Extremes. Nice rods for the money IMO.
  6. CanalStalkin I would keep at it until I spoke to someone high enough in the food chain to resolve the problem. I do not believe this is "typical" of their customer service. It has not been for me. I have had few problems with them, and have never had one that was not resolved to my satisfaction. Good luck.
  7. You're right, it is pretty clear from what he does say, that what he thought GLoomis was about and what Shimano thought, was not the same. That there was legal action and significant legal fees over the use of his name adds fuel to the fire. It would be interesting to know what the differences were, but I doubt that is going to happen any time soon. Too many lawyers involved.
  8. This thread just confirms for me why I need to have my reels done by skilled professionals. I am confident I could do it, but I just don't want to.
  9. Now you're talking Fat-G. 8-) We all love to talk about tackle, and what's best and it is a great way to learn, but the only way to really find out if you like a rod (or reel) is to check it out for yourself. BPS, Cabelas, and most other tackle shops will let you put the reel of your choice on any rod they have to check how it feels, balances, etc. Good luck.
  10. 1. BPS Stickos/GY Senkos-6" 2/3 Netbait Paca craws/chunks 4. Zoom Finesse worms 5. Zoom Baby Brushhogs 6. Zoom Magnum worms 7. Zoom Trickworms Sweet Beavers/BPS knock-offs, Culprit ribbontail worms, Fat Ikas, Zoom Lizzards 6 and 8", Jeff's spider grubs, Kalin Grubs 3 and 5", and Zoom Horny Toads would be my 7 alternates. :-/
  11. I can't imagine taking the hook keeper off the new rods. Definitely a step back if they did.
  12. I have 5 Extreme rods, 2 spinning and 3 BC. Three are 3 years old, the other 2 were bought this spring. The newer ones have hook keepers, the older do not. They all have gold writing.

Well said. If the guy is guilty there is no justification for what he has done. With that said, I will pray for him. We've all done things we would not like to see on the news. We are all capable of unspeakable things. It is the nature of man.
  14. Whatever the clinical disorder that is diametrically opposite of your OCD, I have it. It may be chronic, acute laziness, but I don't care for that diagnosis. : I don't give my reels near the attention they deserve. Somewhere between our extremes is probably a level of maintenance that gets the job done effectively. Once this year is my goal. 8-)
  15. Redline just sell a couple of those custom rod/reel combos you have and go get yourself one.
  16. The Fuego at 6.3:1 has a 28 inch per turn (IPT) retrieval rate. That is fast enough to do everything you want it to do IMHO. 8-) Ideal speed is hard to answer, because it is very subjective. I think 26 IPT is just about right for me, but I like 30 for a Crig or very heavy cover. Lower 20's would be better for deepcranks. Just my .02 Good luck.
  17. Catt you make some great points. With your resume you have my respect and I value your opinion. I made a living working with tools, mechanical and electrical, my entire working life (30+ years). I understand the value of quality equipment. When young and inexperienced I bought some Harbor Freight Quality tools. It did not take long to learn that if one is using tools everyday to make a living, cheap wasn't necessarily good. Most of my wrenches, sockets, and such ended up coming from a chain store-Sears. As the years went on much of my Craftsman stuff was upgraded to their Professional line, but still Sears merchandise. Most anyone who uses tools will tell you Craftsmen tools are not the best, but based on quality, price, warranty, and service they are hard to beat. All of my pipe and tubing tools-Ridgid. My electrical tools, including screwdrivers-Klein. Meters-Fluke. I never found a better value in these tools, although I did try a few times. I've never owned Snap-on tools. I've used them a few times, and would readily agree they are fine tools. I'm just not willing to spend that much for that little difference. My point is we all make value judgments based on our own experience. Because I use Craftsmen tools or BPS reels does not mean I am inexperienced or unknowing. It simply means they work for me.
  18. Was the challenge by lowbudgethooker before your time on this forum? That was (and may still be) a big sore spot for lbh and other members here. Lbh was doing it help a kids fishing program (or something similar) and if I remember correctly, the shows producer wouldn't even talk to lbh. I think your right. LBH did everything but slap him with a glove, but they weren't interested. I think Charlie was afraid of being schooled on his own show. :
  19. My prayers added.
  20. 1/2 oz Bouya Boo jig/ matching Paca chunk 6" Sticko/1/8 oz wacky jig 1/8 oz Buckeye Spot Remover/Zoom Trickworm Bandit 100 Series Crankbait Lucky Craft Pointer 100 DD Color would depend on water clarity. If only one was allowed: black/blue on jig; green/red wacky; junebug shakeyhead; white CB; baby bass jerkbait
  21. My prayers added. I pray He keep you both in His loving hand.
  22. I was going to hit the quote button to see if we could set a new record for number and length... I think that sanother sitebasser and bilgerat have points. It is generally acceptable to bash some products while others seem to be more sacred than others. Why is it acceptable to say Quantum, BPS, and others make junk, yet if someone has the boldness to say he is not impressed with Shimano he is criticized for his opinion? We can say what we know, what we think, what we think we know, what we've heard, that's all cool. We need to be tolerent enough to let others do the same. As usual Glenn is the voice of reason. "If you like brand Y, great! Let's hear why you like it. But please refrain from bashing brand X in the process."
  23. Not that there's anything wrong with that......
