  1. I thought about doing that but I had the fish out of the water longer than I wanted to, so I snapped the photo and got her back into the water. Better to guess at a weight than let a beautiful fish like this die. When she was laying flat next to my rod I picked a mark on it and measured that when I got back to the hotel. It was 23.5" long at least. Thanks all for the replies.
  2. Like I said I have a fish scale, but when I go on a business trip I can't pack everything. If I could I would have brought my 18' BassCat boat and all my gear.
  3. it was next to the pole but flopped over. I have a scale but had to pack lite because I am 900 miles from home.
  4. How big? Did not have anything other than my hat to give a reference. No matter what the weight, it is my new PB
  5. Easy answer to the original question is, you get a shorter rod. Sorry it has been a b!tch of a day. 2 weeks done of a 6 week class in accident reconstruction.
  6. Shad, Shad and Shad. Did I mention Shad Send your question to the address below. It is the KY dept of fish and wildlife. If anyone can answer your question it will be them also check out their website. It may take a little searching but you can find the states fishing report for the western end of the state. It will not be long until Mayflies start to count as a forage for bass and bluegill. Find a mayfly hatch and it will be on like donky kong. info.center@ky.gov
  7. Does anyone thing a drop shot setup would work??? I wonder if it would keep the bait up off of the slimey bottom..
  8. caught 1 3# today. Thanks for the suggestions. I did go down to 1/4 sinker. I try lighter once I get to a tackle shop
  9. got 2 bites on a 10" purple worm. Watched on bass pick it up by the tail but never took it into it's mouth so that I could set the hook. as far as the senkos, wacky rig or what? I've never used senkos but I did bring a bag of watermelon senkos. Weightless? Can a baitcaster with 10# floro be used???
  10. thanks I'll give it a try. I've tried swimming them but I have had a 3/4oz sinker. I think I have some 3/8oz.
  11. Okay I made it to Jacksonville FL. for my 6 weeks of training. Got my Florida fishing license and went fishing in 3 pond/lakes with no success. I know one of the lakes has bass because I can see them swimming around from a balcony overlooking the lake. What should I be fishing with??? I tried a t-rig 7" green worm, t-rig lizard watermelon, black frog, white frog, perch 2.5" rattle trap. Even tried ultra-lite with a roadrunner jig.. They got lockjaw. I fished last night until the skeeters tried to pack me off.. The bottoms all are covered in the green slimy crap and there are no lily pads. I'm fishing from the shore. I'm going fishing now and will check back later to see what I've been doing wrong.
  12. sorry for the post, just trying ot help while taking care of a 3 year old
  13. 4. If your boat was not pre-rigged for 24 volts you will have to pull a new wire up to the TM. If it were me I would see what gauge wire is there now and either match it OR ***go to the next size larger and then***unhook the TM wires at the battery Sorry I was thinking faster than I could type at the time
  14. Back up and slow down. 1. If you had a 12 volt system was the boat pre-rigged for 24 volts? Plug on the boat should say 12/24 if it is. 2. What model TM do you have? is it a true 24 volt only or a 12/24 volt version? 3. What are the wire colors at the connections on the TM itself not what is run in the boat? Should be Black or green, Red and some other color maybe Blue. 4. Take the trolling motor and 1 of the batteries and get about 2 pieces of wire about 6 feet long. For this purpose get a old indoor extension or better yet run to Walmart and buy a small roll of 12 gauge speaker wire it should be marked +/-. Make sure the TM is turned OFF. connect the "-" to the ground connection on the TM, should be Black or Green and probably marked "Ground". Then pick the either one of the other connections, Red if there is one and connect to it. then connect to the battery by stripping the other ends of your wires and twist them around the battery post. Set the motor to 12 volts and turn it on. If it works Great, if not turn it off and set the TM to 24 volts and turn it on. Turn the motor OFF. Did it work on either ? If so, Great, if not take the "+" wire off of the battery and then change to the other wire connection on the TM and hook the wire to the battery again and repeat 12 test then switch to 24 volt. One or the other setting should work with each connection on the TM. This will let you know that the motor works and and battery works. I'm guessing on the colors of the wire from memory and those are the common colors used. 4. If your boat was not pre-rigged for 24 volts you will have to pull a new wire up to the TM. If it were me I would see what gauge wire is there now and either match it OR unhook the TM wires at the battery and make a loop in the end of each wire. Then buy at least 8gauge wire in 3 colors or you can buy colored electrical tape and put 2 through one of the looped wires and 1 through the other looped wire. Make loops with these wires and tape the "slices" together tightly. Now you can use the old wires to pull the new wires in the exact same route as the old wire. Sorry but there was no short way to right this. Be safe troubleshooting. Good luck Clint
  15. actually caught several on canned corn
  16. bow and arrow
  17. welcome aboard
  18. if you are just trying to protect the screen, I use an orbital buffing bonnet turned inside out. The elastic makes for a snug fit. I pack mine around in a old soft sided cooler
  19. looks like a nice lake. Take a Carolina rig out there and drag it around to get a idea of depth and bottom composition. Up at the top of the lake photo it looks like two different bank types (light and dark) Try there and any structure you can. It does not look like much structure is available so and shade they can find I would think that the fish would be there.
  20. used to use a small popper on a fly rod and wear them out in ponds.
  21. Where are the ones near Owensboro? I live in Henderson.
  22. Mouth looks small but it could be a green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) . Green Sunfish are found in most native watersheds in the nation. To not have green sunfish around you is the exception, not the rule. Green sunfish, called "slicks" in Arkansas, "yellow bellied perch" in other areas of the country, are iridescent green, with orange trim around their fins. With a big mouth, green sunfish are considerably more predatory than bluegill or redear. They compete directly with young game fish.
  23. the 10lbs per acre is something I've seen as well for a general rule of thumb. With that being said, Kentucky lake is 160,309-acres. Using that rule of thumb 1,603,090 pounds of bass could be harvested without adversely affecting the bass population. I can find no published data on the harvest of bass on the lake but I did see that an estimated 50,000 anglers visit the lake by boat per year. If all were bass fishermen (yes I know they were not) that would be 32 pounds per angler per year. Seems like a lot of fish. Or look at it this way, if the average 15" keeper bass weighs 2 pounds that is 800,000 bass that could or should be harvested to prevent overpopulation using the "10 pound per acre suggestion". Again that is 16 2lbs per angler. I just wonder if we kept some of those 15" fish for a year or two, would there be bigger bass4 or 5 years down the road? I guess my real question is, Can a large reservoir get overpopulated/ stunted growth if C&R is practiced??
  24. Thanks for the replies. I like hearing others view of things.
  25. I was using KY lake as an example. Yes there is plenty of shad, but I also hear how if we have a very cold winter and there is a shad die off that it will hurt the growth rate the following year. I was thinking about this because in deer hunting. I some states with a healthy population they have implemented a system of a slot limit of a certain rack size, be it by width or points, to encourage deer the opportunity to reach trophy size and data has shown that it is working. I think it would be interesting to see what if anything would happen. It would not hurt the fishermen that practice catch and release other asking them to help by taking a few home. Or the Dept of fish and wildlife could use all the tournaments as a way to collect fish in the "slot" for removal/ relocation.
