  1. Thanks Captain, I have been looking at Google Earth for the past week. Around here there are no old school "Tackle Shops". Just big box stores and gas stations that sell nightcrawlers and chicken livers for the catfisherman. I've been asking around. The last bass tournament results I can find for the river had a total weight of a 5 fish limit weighing 5.4 pounds. Out of a 25 boat tournament only 3 boat came in with 5 fish and 10 came in with 0 fish. That is with a 12" size limit. I hope we catch something and we have good weather. I'll keep beating the bushes sorta speak for info and maybe a fish. Thanks again an wishing you good fishing. Clint
  2. Negative, 2 young kids and a job on call 24/7. I'm luck to fish 5 times a year from my boat.
  3. Tried posting this up in the Northeast forum and only got one response. I was hoping some of the Mississippi river and Missouri river guys might have some advise. There has got to be some river rats on here somewhere. Anybody got any tips on fishing a big river like the lower Ohio River area for Bass? Looking to take a wounded warrior fishing next month for a VFW event and I have never done any river fishing for bass.. I told him not to expect much but I would like to put him on some fish. I've been looking at maps and there are several long islands that are shallow on the back sides. We are going to be fishing around Owensboro KY. I only see one creek that looks to be wide enough to maybe get a boat up into it a little. I'm just clueless where/how to start. I'm doing this for a friend to help out with the wounded warrior program. Thanks Clint
  4. I guess no one has ever fished a river...

  6. Sorry I did not see this before you went. I live near Deer Creek Lodge and was a charter member back in the 1990's. I never knew that they had a place to fish. Must be something relatively new. I dropped my membership 20 years ago because of the way it was run.. Hope you had good luck.
  7. Coming down to fish West Point Lake in 3 weeks April 15th. Never fished In Georgia. Any tips??? What type of baits? Presentations?? Be staying at Highland Marina Thanks ctf58

  10. Fellow BCB Owners, The date has been scheduled for the 2013 Kentucky Area Bass Cat Owners Tournament (K.A.B.C.O.T). This two day event is scheduled for Father’s Day weekend June 15 & 16, 2013 on Kentucky Lake with Kentucky Dam Village being the launch site. We hope to make this event fun and you’ll bring your family. For those that can’t make it we’re sorry if we didn’t pick a weekend or location that works with your schedule. Hopefully we can make this an annual event and make it grow. This area of the U.S. has needed a BCB regional event. There will be a mandatory pre-tournament meeting that Friday evening before. A cook-out is planned that evening and the area’s best lake guide, Captain Dave Stewart of Bass Buster Guide Service, will be there for a brief speech and answer any questions. We’re still growing this event and looking for additional sponsors. If you know of any potential sponsors please let us know. Rules for the event will mirror SEBCOG rules and 1-13 will apply with the exception of changing Alabama to Kentucky. Event hours to be determined. The weigh-in each day will be handled Fisherman’s Headquarters’ who has graciously offered to do this for us. They are the areas largest bass tackle store and just a short drive to Draffenville. Please support them as they are supporting us. Our special room rate is $44 a night and tax is included and is good for all days in your stay, not just the tourney weekend. Just tell them you're fishing KABCOT. They have a huge lighted parking lot with electrical outlets for boat charging. Parking places are large and don't require you to disconnect your trailer. All rooms have fridges, microwaves, Cable TV, WIFI, ect. Lobby has a computer for use as well and a laundry room. 11. Hurricane Issac should come into western KY the same time as dove season! That sucks.
  12. BassCat Mines a 1998 and is great. driest ride I've ever been in.
  13. I've fished a few cow ponds and I'd suggest going one evening and watch for fish hitting bugs on the surface. other wise take a light bluegill setup and a few worms. If there are any baitstealers then there is probably bigger fish and you know there is sustained life. More apt to be catfish and gills instead of bass.
  14. have the Veritas even been out 3 years? That could be one way to prove it
  15. Thanks for the replies. I understand the A-rig is the new kid on the block, but here on Ky Lake it is what is catching fish in the fall pattern and i own 2 of them and fish local small tourney's. I have a 7' mh that I have tried throwing the A-rig on and it does work but I thought a little more length and a softer tip might help with distance. My A-rig is HEAVY 1/8-1/4 jig heads and 4"-5" swimbaits is easily over 3oz. this is the recommendation from and Al@b@m@ rig site "We recommend that you use a 7' to 8' medium heavy to heavy rod." That is why i was looking at the Abu Garcia Veritas 7'11" Heavy Mod/fast. A custom rod builder says this "In general terms, you’re going to need a 7-8 foot fishing rod that is at least medium heavy power and with rod action in the moderate to fast action." From Bassmaster interview Paul Elias' Alabama rig resembled a small school of shad. Each swimbait was impaled on a 3/8- or 1/2-ounce jighead, so the entire rig weighed 2 ounces or more. He cast it on a 7-foot, 11-inch Pinnacle flipping rod and Pinnacle reel spooled with 65-pound SpiderWire Ultracast FluoroBraid. The rod's parabolic bend was critical to his success. Again thanks for the input. I think I'll but one of these and continue to use my 7' for crankbaits. I need to learn to pitch and flip as well. Am I right in understanding that these 2 setups are to stiff for crankbaits and I need to find a rod with more "Flex" like a moderate power, moderate tip if I want to crank. What about the reel I know it is a slower speed, would it be a good crankbait reel?
  16. Thanks ww2farmer, is there a happy in-between in rods that I could use as a dual purpose or are these two lure styles to far apart? I was mainly thinking of the weight of the lure and the resistance in the water cranking them back. There is a Abu Veritas 7'6" MH Fast tip. I'm stuck with Walmart and Gander Mountain to buy local on the rod and save on shipping. Is there anything you can recommend? From what I've read a little more flex would be good for Cranking and I hoped the Moderate/fast tip and 7'11" length might help with that. I do not want a carrot or skeet reese, I do not think I could look at them all day. I have not bought a rod or reel over $50 before so I'm wanting to get the most bang for my buck an my butt is puckered that I'm even thinking of spending $200 total.
  17. Needing a deep crank combo and wondered if it could double as an A-rig combo? Here is what I'm looking at getting, but your opinions are all welcome. Abu Garcia Veritas 7'11" Heavy Mod/fast and BPS Pro Qualifier 5.2:1 for about $200 or Bass Pro Shops® Pro Qualifier® Reel/CarbonLite™ Trigger Rod Baitcast Combos 5.2:1 7'6" Med/Hvy Fast for about $200 after shipping I read that you need a high speed reel for the A-rig, but I would think it would wear me out. seems like I would be fishing them in some of the same areas around ledges and drops on KY lake. Is this a possible setup for both or am I dreaming? Would it be a good deep crank setup? Heck would it be good for anything? I'm really questioning myself because this is the only rod reel purchase I'll make this year and I got some new deep 18"+ cranks and 3 A-rigs that I have not got to try yet! Help!!! Thanks
  18. thanks for the info. Hoping to head to Lake Barkley Thursday afternoon to fish until I get tired, then anchor and sleep a few hours and start back up around 4am. What colors were you using and is Pickwick up to summer pool? KY and Barkley are still 1.5' below summer level. I wish you guys would let a little water downstream to us!
  19. I started with the Walmart Pinnacle that cost $49 and a $40 6'6" Mh rod. I tighten the brakes until the 1/2oz casting plug barely would drop from the rod tip and the spool stopped as soon as the plug hit the ground. I used 15pound mono and started casting at most 20 feet. Backlashes were frequent but I could always get them out. I practiced in the yard every night for 2 weeks and got to where I could cast 40 feet. Then I went for the long cast and buggered everything up. that was the only time I had to cut things out and started over. I love the Pinnacle reel and bought another. I also have a black max and a silver max and like them as well. I never regretted starting with a $49 baitcaster and still use them all after 3 years. I started having issues with one Pinnacle where the anti reverse stopped working so I took it completely apart and cleaned and oiled it. It cast farther than a revo I have now and if I broke it trying to clean it I would not have been upset. As far as casting someone told me it was like a baseball throw and to turn the reel sideways so that the spool is up and down. Both tips seemed to help. Good luck
  20. if they are wired in parallel ( positive to positive, negative to negative) then you can hook up to just one battery as usual. Are the batteries the same age and close to the same condition? If not then one might charge faster than the other. Try it and check on them to make sure one is not boiling because the charger is trying to finish the slower of the two. Ive charged in parallel 100's of times with no issues as long as the batteries are similar. I have also had a older battery boil over because the other battery (newer) was a higher capacity and was taking longer to charge .
  21. All boats are different in set-up. When you had the motor dropped all the way down, what was the prop height? I have a BassCat Sabre 18'4" with a 150 Merc and 24 pitch Trophy prop. When I got it the prop was 3" below the pad and I would lose water pressure at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) 6300rpms. I dropped the motor in 1/4" steps until I got a steady 15Psi water pressure. Now my RPMs are still to high (6200) for my liking and I am going to try a few props in the 25 pitch range as long as it does not affect my holeshot. By the way I am getting 60mph with 2 big guys and tourny gear at 5900 rpms which is not WOT for me, The one time a spun it all the way out (6200+) it was just me and all my gear and I reached 71 one dash and the one time I could look at handheld gps in my lap it was reading 68.2. If you have a boat shop around ask if you can try out a few props. It could make a huge difference. Going from a 25p to a 24p prop in theory will give you 200 more rpms if it is the same style prop. If 5100 is your current WOT I would be looking at 23p props to get you into the 5500-5600 rpm range. Going from 4 blade to 3 blade can get some people more speed. Look at the tag on the transom mount of your motor, it should say what max rpm is. BTW I rarely go over 50 in my boat . Good luck and stay safe.
