  1. I can't stop watching that fish slam that spinnerbait...its amazing how well bass can hide and how quickly they can come ****** a lure. Does this video make anyone else curious to see what goes on under the water with the fish we catch? I've fished gin clear water a couple times and it was amazing to see the bass strike, but it'd be awesome to see all the different things that happen every time. Thats a good video for showing what happens in the aqua, though..its actually cool for a little bit of studying to see how fish react.
  2. dude, look at the hog at the 2.23 mark..that thing is a pig and I loved the spinnerbait strike right after that..that bass came from a pretty good ways to hit the thing...straight on hammer, too!
  3. even though I don't believe that an experiment can simulate the real conditions a hook is under when in a fishes gut/mouth...if it WAS done right, it could be an answer to the constantly recurring battle of how long it takes a hook to rust and leave a fishes mouth. Its not like the guy is trying to break new scientific ground...just a test to see how long it really takes instead of guessing about it. Its not going to change the world but it might change his and others opinion on the matter.
  4. http://www.ifishillinois.org/science/species/LMB_spec.htm I found that for you. It may provide a LITTLE bit more information for you to start judging growth rate and proper sizing of the fish you catch. Just remember that its a general weight..and the actual weight of your fish may vary depending on when it last ate, that kinda stuff.
  5. Thats what I was saying...there isn't a soul who would be able to tell whether its healthy or not by looking at a flat picture. A 12 inch bass will generally weigh just under 1 pound. If I HAD to make any sort of judgement from that picture..I would say that its not too far off from that and would not feel confident in saying otherwise. Like I said though, without an accurate scale to weigh it and without knowing the general growth rate in your area and all that kinda stuff that helps fisheries biologists and pond managers make there decisions, theres not much of a way to tell. Cart7 offered some more good advice by mentioning having someone from fish and wildlife look at your pond if you're concerned. Using angling as a way of population sampling would take several years to compile the right kind of data to determine what situation you're dealing with.
  6. without someone actually looking at the fish(not a picture of a fish)..theres no way to tell if its healthy or not.
  7. barometric pressure has very little effect, if at all, on fishing...its the changes that come with the pressure that change the way a person fishes. Stop and think about water. It is constantly exerting pressure on anything it surrounds, trying to "fill that space up" with itself. The effect of atmospheric pressure is going to be very negligible compared to the water pressure the fish faces every second of every day. Bass feel more pressure by moving up or down about 1 foot in the water than anything the weather will EVER produce. What can you gather from all that? The actual barometric pressure reading has pretty much nothing at all to do with how fish are feeding or anything else...they really don't feel a thing. What they do experience though is the weather that accompanies barometric pressure changes. THAT is what changes the fishing. Simply, don't believe all the BS about barometric pressure effecting swim bladders and yada yada yada..its nonsense. A fish would have to move just a few inches to regulate even the most enormous change in the barometer. Watch the weather, see when storms are coming and when they pass..that's what you're looking for.
  8. do you have any idea how deep the water is around those pilings? Tossing a soft plastic out there like a senko or even a finesse worm wacky rigged could be a pretty big hit. The crankbaits are a good idea. For all the scum, I'd be throwing horny toads all around it..especially fishing them UNDER the surface along the edges of the stuff. I've never met a bass hanging out under the slop that didn't think it was a good idea to come out and eat the toad.
  9. I'd like to fish with Dan-seems like a genuinely nice guy who's been around the fishing block a few times Rebasser - I don't ever forget people who do nice things for no reason at all LBH - he has an extreme enthusiasm for fishing and wants to share it with everyone..its contagious CJBasswhacker - he lives in KY, He sent me 5 jigs in the mail just for a post on the internet, and he fishes KY lake..a place I've never gotten to go. I know there are many more on this board who could teach me many, many things..and I'd love to fish with just about any one of ya..those just come off the top of my head
  10. I don't mind telling absolutely anything that I know. Growth comes from knowledge and if no knowledge is being passed on, it will eventually die. I believe that everyone should LEARN on their own with things ex. I hate all the questions about "what do I do right here when this is like this and thats like that?" or "where are the bass?" That takes away the whole point of fishing! Things like techniques, lures, patterns on a particular body of water, I see no reason not to share that.
  11. I caught a fish yesterday that had a red lesion on its side as well.
  12. about the only cause I've heard commonly associated with DDD is aging....and no one wants to get old :\ After reading more about it, I think maybe I'm headed down that road, but I sure hope not.
  13. I'd say the normal person could sling a lure(weighted right) 150-200ft, but that is really not necessary unless you're bank fishing or fishing in the middle of the lake for smallmouth or something like that(other than the usual..spooky fish so on and so on)...but even then you probably won't be that far away.
  14. LBH, I suspect that an ear infection is the root of my problem, as well..about two weeks ago I had blockage in my right ear, sounded like an air conditioner running in my head constantly, then after that goes away I get vertigo. I'm a strong willed person so it ticks me off to no end when I can't keep my balance well or walk without holding on to something..anything like that. It does make you feel very tired, and wobbly on the legs...all that good stuff. And lol, yes its a whole lot less fun than that other kind of vertigo
  15. It hasn't really limited me because I'm a moron, but I've been dealing with vertigo for a week now. Its a pretty annoying and sometimes scary experience, and the vomiting isn't all that fun. Its like being drunk 24/7 for those that experienced that sometime in life. I actually had went camping last night and was planning to stay the whole weekend but ended up having to pack up my tent and everything else at 2 in the morning because I was too sick to stay. :\ Valascus, get better soon man, thats some rough stuff to be going through Rogue, same goes to you...I've had back pain for 8 years now..and its a very annoying thing to deal with, too. There are a lot of times I'm not able to do what I wanna do because of my back, and if I don't sleep a certain way...the next day you can forget about. My problems aren't as serious as DDD but, it hurts, heh...I won't even think of having surgery on my back..too scary.
  16. are you staring each other in the eye? IF you are well seen by the bass, they will usually not bite very much, and especially not when theres a lot of noise and commotion around.
  17. even flukes! and its not a straight down technique, nor just a "finesse" technique as DR kind of said. I use it a lot when the bite is tough after fronts because it helsp me fish a little slower. I also use it if I wanna keep my lure just off the bottom when I feel like thats working better.
  18. no, it'd still be considered snagging.
  19. tough choice between a green pumpkin horny toad or a watermelon chartreuse swirl tiki stick.
  20. With the technology and the research we have at our fingertips about growing things..I don't think there should be a doubt in ANYONES mind that the record WILL be broken. We've already seen proof that fish can grow beyond 22 lbs and I'm sure there are some that are much larger than that but will never be caught because they're just too smart/inaccessible. Thats why I don't think the record is a big deal, its going to fall to a new one..soon.
  21. What am I wrong about? You're asking for "reasonable proof" for something that happened 74 years ago and has been talked about for the last 50 by everyone and their mother who fishes. What more are you going to learn? Theres a snowballs chance in hell that some evidence has lasted through that much time to "prove" to you that he actually caught that fish. I'm not trying to say you're a bad person or anything like that, just saying that its just a number that CAN be beaten and its one of the largest(and to me, entertaining) fish stories of all-time. I can't really see anything wrong with that. From my knowledge, all Perry received was a handful of lures from Creek Chub. Quite a far cry from the myriad of things probably going to be thrown the way of whoever sets the new record. All I'm really sayin though is this...get out there and try to break the record if you don't think it should stand. Us humans are always "woulda coulda shoulda" but sometimes ya gotta just do it. I just don't think Perry should be called a liar, a cheat, whatever else...it happened so long ago and not one of us here were alive even remotely close to when he caught whatever fish he caught.
  22. really, what kind of "facts" are you going to get after 74 years? Acting like this is some guy that made millions off the fish and all that stuff just sounds dumb. What reason is there to be so adamently against this record? Why do you care so much? You're only going to believe what you're willing to accept..and from the sound of things, you don't accept that he caught the fish so you're basically asking for a one in a million chance to be proven wrong. Why would the family really lie about it? Or anyone else for that matter...they're not gonna gain anything from it. The length to which some people are going to discredit a silly record..its humorous.
  23. why get all bent out of shape over the thing, regardless? Thats what makes me laugh about all this world record talk. Some people act like they have direct personal ties to it and so forth. Its just a fishing record that is nothing more than a number. When someone beats it the right way, then there you go..a new record that I'm sure everyone will inevitably moan and groan about. Remember, ITS JUST A FISH...not hurting one person one single bit. To say that the record is not true because it happened so long ago, before the age of computers and internet and digital camera's and messageboards and so on is just as silly as someone saying the story is all true. Thats a hawg bass in that picture and we all know that its monstrous..so there we have it..now go out and catch YOUR world record and put some sunshine on your face.
  24. lift it, jiggle it, drag it, there are many ways to put action into a soft plastic. I like lifting and jiggling myself.
  25. Think about where bass live and what bass eat for just a second...... the gills aren't as fragile and delicate as some would like you to believe. I'm not suggesting that someone go in there and just start poking around with a scale hook, but using the gill slit right at the jaw is not gonna be harmful to the fish. Why keep putting holes in the fish if you're planning to release it? So, all in all, I say don't go runnin wild in the gills but using the first slit up near the lower jaw isn't going to hurt the fish any more than hooking it in the first place.
