I used a quantum xtralite 6'6" UL (longest rod) and a shimano sienna 1000 I picked up at walmart, totaled around $50. Don't think you can get the sienna at wally anymore though, but an Abu should work too. I've seen berkley make UL rods at cabelas designed for throwing eggs, they have a moderate action and long lengths for around $30, don't know where else you could get them but keep your eye out Edit: here's a link http://www.berkley-fishing.com/products/rods-and-combos/rods/trout-dough

He still couldn't get the drill in. I say you need to start removing things until you can get a drill in there

This. Technique Specific really pushes more of a 'buy more' standpoint. If you look around you'll notice there's techniques that utilize same actions/tapers but similar rod lengths. Personal height, your feel (in your hands), and where you're fishing (boat/land) will affect the outcome of length so the specific might not even match up for you.

That was unfortunate, hope you have a good recovery over whatever it turns out to be and hope the doctor gives a healthier diagnosis

I tried twice (shad) but the weather was just too much to get a good feel. It did weave slightly with slow cranking, after that it was too windy to try any more retrieves.
