  1. I've got an idea... use a spinning reel. oe
  2. I'm impressed... this thread went pretty long before someone said he was going to take his two packages of worms and go home without playing this silly game. I'm not terribly surprised that pretty much all of us recognize the mental importance to catching bass, but this board has some pretty confident sticks? One of the directions I thought the thread might turn was how versatile the worm really is and that fishing only a worm isn't actually hand-tying anyone. Wacky, shakey, weightless as a topwater, drop-shot, bite off the tail & Ned rig it, I've been swimming shortened worms on jigheads probably longer than Keitech's been selling swimbaits. There's not many seasons or situations where a 7" worm can't be adapted and catch any sub-species of bass. I had nothing I was trying to prove, just wondered how each of us might handle such an unlikely situation in this age of endless tackle. Thanks for the responses, I've enjoyed reading them. Carry on... oe
  3. It appears to me the smallmouth are relating to those points. oe
  4. IF there is a good population of smallmouth; and I have reservations about that due to size and depth of this lake; I would be looking for any area with large rock. Without finding any rocky areas I'd fish the heck out of the area northwest of the blue marker dot. Sharp drop off along the shore, mid-depth flat area with quick drop to the deepest area of the lake. oe
  5. Yes, if you throw it unattached to a weighted lure. When attached to a lure it will follow wherever that lure goes. Nylon monofilament has characteristics that make it a better choice than fluorocarbon for many presentations. Use your line as a tool to fish with... most of us use a "set" of screwdrivers... oe
  6. My head lamp hasn't been used for a couple of years; since I found one of these... http://www.bestlightedhats.com/ordering-pilot-hats.html oe
  7. You arrive at your next bass tournament and the director hands everyone two packages of 7" green pumpkin straight-tail worms and announces you can use any hook or unskirted jighead, but you're limited to only the two packages of worms he gave you. How confident are you that you'll finish in the money? Bait or bass knowledge... what do you depend upon to catch your bass? oe
  8. That's why I suggested hand stripping a few more yards at the end of the cast... oe
  9. Spool braid on tightly, but then send a good cast off gently then hand pull a few more yards off the spool and reel it in under normal bait resistant tension. oe
  10. My grandaughter is about 4 yrs old in my avatar, we were having a blast over some shallow rocks with a popper. I'd cast to get some distance, she could understand to let the rings disappear and give the bait a little pop, then wait and watch. The smallies were willing and we had a blast... she's 8 now and still remembers. She lives 7 hours away and we don't get to do that near enough! oe
  11. It doesn't take much practice. A more horizontal glide that stays sub-surface easier. Also, I like to open the hook gap very slightly which makes it a little harder to bury the point back into the bait... but, I can bury the point lightly into the side of the groove. I like fishing the bait rigged this way over and through submerged weed tops. Bass in my lakes don't seem to mind it swimming upside down. oe
  12. Avon makes a sun screen/ bug repellent combo lotion that works pretty well for me... no Deet. oe
  13. I've fished hare/hair jigs in my Midwest waters for many years. The bait has produced a good number of my largest smallmouth, walleye and musky... during very specific times of the open water season and all shallower than 10'. My suggestion to you is don't use a square peg when you're obviously filling a round hole. Good luck figuring out your lakes. oe
  14. You'll want to keep it clean... reach in the water and wipe it clean with a cloth each week. oe
  15. ... so, how did do with the 110 at your tournament? oe
  16. When fishing fluke styles baits with the molded groove (presumably on the bottom), do you fish it groove on the bottom or top? I'm a groove on top, hook point hidden in the groove guy.oe
  17. I'm new to most of the newer sonar technologies... just upgraded from gray scale X-85 unit to Hook 7. The couple of times I've been on the water with the new unit I've tried the downscan over-lay feature. It appears to me the two technologies (sonar/downscan) are covering each other up and are less detailed than viewing sonar/downscan side by side. What am I not understanding about the overlay feature? Is this an often used feature on today's units? I'd take a little schooling from anyone concerning this feature. oe
  18. I prefer talking to someone alive at the other end... It appears they discontinued my favorite smallie grub. I'll have to call and ask them! oe
  19. d**n! And I've already had my bath this Spring... oe
  20. Is that bright bone or subtle bone? oe
  21. Dress the skirtless spinners with a 4" or 5" grub or swimbait... oe
  22. I'd change the tip guide with one that has a ceramic insert. oe
