  1. i can see a white rod a lot better than a black rod at night. probably just differences in our vision. but i must say, at times while night fishing i also feel like i see my rod tip bounce when in reality nothings there and it probably didnt...usually im trying to watch as many as 4 or 5 rods if the bite is slow.
  2. they were breathing i believe. the only time ive seen bass do that were when they were suspended. or possibly it has something to do with the "bladder" or whatever it is that allow fish to sit still and suspend like that, as some species of fish i believe have to swim nonstop.
  3. maybe it was the camo color sufix siege that was bad, penguino. ive been fishing sufix siege the last two years and its a great limp line to me. ive fished it in 6lb, 10lb, 12lb, 14lb and 17lb and have had no such problems as you described. also sufix elite is a good line too. i got some in 8lb on sale at walmart last year... or perhaps you could try trilene smooth casting xl
  4. youre still talking about something im not, let it go. youre talking braid vs mono. im talking about mono itself and how people are mischaracterizing it. we are talking about two different things, there is nothing to debate here. if you want to get the last word, go ahead. i wont be responding back to it.... i agree that the hook will be set before any line stretch comes into play, unless youre just using hooks that are dull as hell. and that the fish often hook themselves before you can even set the hook. lol whats a gibb's slap? and at this point ive said all i can say. i just dont like when people spread what i feel is misinformation
  5. youre arguing(debating) something that im not. i never said anything about mono vs braid. only thing i said about braid was i seen people set hooks with braid harder than i do using mono. also, im talking about bass fishing, thought that was pretty noticeable since i mentioned bass, never said anything about pike or pickerel. i just think theres a better comparison than rubberband is all... theyre not the same thing though, or their woulnt be a need for both words. they are both comparisons, but a metaphor is a more direct comparison and similes use like or as. i didnt make these literary rules up lol. so, nope, i cant call it metaphorical. also, i wasnt debating what lines people like for contact baits, i was debating that people are greatly over-exaggerating the stretch of mono.
  6. i like what mccloughan has done for the redskins this offseason. im excited for the draft for the first time in 3 years. having a first round pick helps that though. but having a competent GM and personnel man in mccloughan also increases my excitement, this is something the skins havent had since they fired casserly. and i also agree that mccloughan is the skins best move this offseason. now if snyder and bruce allen can only stay patient long enough to allow some stability and give scot m a fair chance to build a team through the draft. i feel we improved our defensive talent especially along the line. we need help at both OLB and ILB in our 3-4 defense. i also feel we improved defensively the minute we fired jim haslett and let raheem morris walk, addition by subtraction. joe barry is not exactly an exciting hire, but he cant be worse. after all, you cant place the whole blame of a 0-16 lions team when he was the defensive coordinator there, can you? either way, he will be running a different scheme with different players than he had back then. jeron johnson is an interesting addition. he is the type of signing the skins never make in the past before mccloughan. im not sold on the dashon goldson trade, maybe lovies tampa 2 wasnt suited for him, but he aint been the same guy he was in san fran. either way, i think he is an upgrade to what we have had at safety in the recent past. also like the chris culliver addition at CB, one of the few players who seemed to keep up with odell beckham of the giants last year. i get the feeling im going to hate playing him twice a year for a long time. i think oline upgrades and pass rushers and ILBs will come in the draft. as well as some young secondary help. we also should draft a RB and TE, a QB like Grayson also wouldnt shock me...joe thiessman insists cousins will be traded before or during the draft...lot of people think we could go amari cooper in the first round to the skins. id personally love to get a good haul of draft picks in a trade back scenario...
  7. speaking in terms of artificial, i like the rebel crickhopper and rebel tad fry for panfish. and also recently discovered trout magnets are deadly panfish baits. otherwise, just get some nightcrawlers or crickets. cant go wrong with either on most days...
  8. ALL HAIL THE UGLY STIK!!! (LOL) anyways, get the ugly stik catfish rod. i have an 8 foot MH ugly stik catfish spinning rod with a penn captiva CV2 6000 spinning reel with 20lb stren mono on it. it works great. provides a fun fight on 3lb eater cats even though it easily handles them. i have yet to hook a huge catfish on it, but im sure i could handle it with relative ease. i have also used it for striper fishing. and have even caught bluegill and small white perch on it while catfishing(turned those into bait lol). so i guess its "sensitive" yet powerful and strong if thats what youre looking for. here is a link to the casting rod version of the spinning rod i have http://www.basspro.com/Shakespeare-Ugly-Stik-Catfish-Casting-Rod/product/91862/ also, if you plan to catfish at night, its always better to have a white rod as its easier to see in the dark, plus the rod has a glow in the dark tip. then you dont have to go taping glow sticks to your rod and stuff like that...
  9. first off, i know what a metaphor is, im not stupid. but it seems youve confused metaphors and similes. metaphors dont use the words "like" or "as". the phrase "it stretches like a rubberband" is actually a simile and not a metaphor. instead of telling me to slow down while reading, perhaps you should slow down and think about what youre typing before trying to insult ones intelligence, yet you accuse me of being the uncivil one. read some of the other posts that support the idea that line stretch is not as bad as many are making it out to be. im not the only one with that opinion, just because i defend my position more staunchly doesnt mean i deserve to be singled out, attacked, and ganged up on for not buying into something that i believe not to be true... and its not that im reading it literal so much as its being grossly over-exaggerated by some and you know it. big game is not even CLOSE to stretching like a rubberband, find a better comparison to make your point, otherwise its a gross over-exaggeration and a fallacy. quite frankly, youre just wasting line and money by changing it twice a month, unless you do a ton of fishing and your spools are actually getting really low every couple of weeks. mono will last for years on a reel if properly stored after use... as stated above in this post, youre not even using a metaphor. youre grossly over-exaggerating the whole thing. i fish mono exclusively and stretch is barely noticeable. the only time the stretch is a negative is if i get snagged and have to pull my line to free the snag or break the line. it does not take me extra hard hooksets to set a hook in a bass with mono, i see guys fishing braid who set the hook way harder than i do with mono. a bass has soft flesh, it doesnt take a whole lot to set a sharp hook in a bass. someone said their mono stretched like 12-15 feet on a hookset and i find that highly laughable for a number of reasons, what are they doing? running backwards while setting the hook to account for that much stretch? are they using a 24 foot rod? no, neither, theyre grossly over-exaggerating line stretch in mono. im speaking from my personal experience, not what someone on tv told me to sell a consumer on their sponsors product. those people on tv are often pro-fishermen, but theyre also trying to make a living by endorsing products, its up to you to draw the line on what is real and what is a product endorsement, what is fact and what is opinion, because not everything they say is based on actual fact
  10. fallacy. a rubberband stretches and breaks very easily, big game in general does not stretch like a rubberband. go ahead and try it for yourself. where was i uncivil? in no way, shape, or form does big game stretch like a rubberband, and that is a fact. go ahead and pull on a rubberband and pull on a piece of big game line, then tell me you disagree its a fallacy, the rubberband is going to stretch and break a lot sooner and easier than the big game... i agree.
  11. lol at stretch being over-exaggerated in this thread too. you will be fine using big game, the hook will set just fine. sure it has stretch, but its nothing like a rubberband, not even close, people need to quit spreading fallacies...
  12. a little advice via catt... drop the rod, reel the slack, set the hook im thinking your line was a bit slack when you attempted your hook set your friend should learn to try bigger line, he wouldnt have to cut off any other than an occasional retie perhaps and thats after many fish... youre just over-exaggerating stretch
  13. i went pond hopping in a jon boat last week. 16 footer with 3 of us in it. my friends who boat it was had anchors on both ends he would drop while we fished a spot. pull them up when we moved spots. he had a trolling motor but we only used it to move spots not control the boat while fishing. we had paddles as well. first time i ever truely pond fished from a boat. the first pond i almost rolled the boat over and fell in the water while boarding it, luckily i saved myself lol. still made for some good laughs for them though
  14. never used it, but just seen babe winkleman talking about it on a crappie fishing show he did that aired this past weekend...
  15. i didnt say mono line didnt have stretch. and when you set a hook, id be worried if your rod didnt move and the tip didnt bend. that has nothing to do with stretch though, rods are designed to bend when loaded up with pressure...sometimes those big fish dont move when you set the hook, feels like a snag sometimes, but the rod always bends... really? it had some of the worst stretch ive ever seen, though said stretch never gave me a problem... and? i've seen guys using the latest greatest equipment not know they were getting a bite with a cameraman or underwater view yelling at them to set the hook but they didnt because they couldnt feel the bite. everyone has bites they never knew they had no matter the rod or line theyre using. and frankly water stretching line without any significant resistance seems like..well a stretch. and really, drag on bare line means nothing and not indicative of actual fishing scenarios. as for those guys swinging for the fences, maybe they need a little more self control. really dont see how the experiment you referenced has anything to do with line stretch... ---------------- those worried about line stretch are wasting their time worrying about it. how line stretch got turned into a negative i dont know, but ive yet to experience any negative effects of it while fishing. most likely spin by marketers wanting to sell the "next great line" that costs 5 times as much as mono and really doesnt work any better...
  16. for one, stretch is overrated, especially in bass fishing. when you set the hook, there is minimal to no line stretch because it doesnt take that much force to drive a sharp hook into the soft fleshy tissue of a basses mouth. and because youre fighting the fish with a tight line anyways, a little stretch from the fish pulling isnt going to be a big factor either...
  17. i hold it with the reel foot between my middle and ring fingers, so two fingers on each side of it. which is why i think split grip rods make no sense
  18. you should habituate a bigfoot...
  19. sorry i dont have much experience for small mouth. Thanks for reporting back though. Also, thanks for the tip HokieDJ, if i ever do make it i will keep that in mind...
  20. just spent friday morning down in NC pond hopping on a jon boat. i almost took a spill in the water getting on the boat the first pond we hit lol. luckily i was able to regain balance and stabilize the boat instead of falling in and ruining my cell phone and wallet. my friends got a good laugh at me still though, talking about the look on my face lol. i wasnt anywhere near Charlotte though, we fished in Nash County. first pond was an old rock pit that my friends had never fished before and by all appearances had no fish in it and was extremely deep. Next pond we went all the way around it and only got three fish, one being a huge bluegill that took a crankbait one friend was fishing. the first fish was a bass my bro-in-law took on a top water torpedo. my bass came on the last stretch of the pond, i was fishing a t-rigged berkeley 5in shakey worm in red shad color with a pegged 1/4oz weight. i had pretty much just tied it on too. was lucky to not be the only one to get skunked. i also threw a senko, pit boss, spinnerbait, rage toad, and husky jerk to no avail...
  21. i especially agree with everything there underlined in red, cant argue a bit of it...
  22. are you a Nats fan or just talking about the Nats(because its your pick)? Im a Nats fan here. I must say, i dont think Strasburg has pitched as good as he did since that year they shut him down. But it also doesnt help their bats have gone cold the last 2 postseasons in '12 and '14. I still think they shouldve kept michael morse and adam la roche go in free agency...Nats are entering the year kind of banged up, im just waiting to hear about a bryce harper or pitcher injury next. Rendon will start the season on the DL with a sprained MCL. I hope the Nats can find a way to keep Ian Desmond on the team beyond this season(or even this season in full), he was rumored in trade talks and cant agree on a long term deal either. He is my favorite Nationals player. A lot of people here loved relief pitcher Tyler Clippard, but i was absolutely not impressed by him as it seems he was always blowing leads and games, so glad he got traded. he always made things way more interesting than they had to be. Hate to see a 17 game winner last year in Tanner Roark go back to the bull pen this season, i hope max scherzer is the real deal.
  23. i seen them catching reds on rage tail shrimp on a fishing show on tv once...also seen them using rage tail crabs...
  24. i never fished there but been wanting to for awhile now, but i think there is a trail there along goose creek that you can follow about a mile or so all the way to the potomac and fish in the creek along the way. i cant vouch that the bank is clear from trees and plant-life or if you can wade. check for potential spots there on google earth maps... it would be nice if you can check it out and report back in this thread...
