And yet that's the way it is. Only you and RW seem to despise the Revo's brake. Those that have used my advice have come back to this board and stated the advice works, and so does the brake. Your experience with the Revo's brake seems very isolated in the scheme of things. Actually, in my years of spending time on fishing forums I've never seen a fishing reel that had so many complaints by experienced fishermen on the operation of the reel to prevent backlash as the Revo SX and STX had. None. The Revo is the first one in my recollection that guys were bailing on the reel due to it's finicky nature. Not just me and RW, plenty of fella's had problems. I suppose had I decided to just stick with Garcia because I've been using their reels for 35 years I never would've realized there was better.

Which does and doesn't make sense though. As your setup of the SX and STX indicates as well as my own experience, you have to set the spool tension higher on those reels vs. other reels. Instead of a setting that allows the lure to begin falling as the spool release button is pushed, ending with the spool stopping when the lure strikes the water, you have to bump the rod tip to get the lure started on the SX/STX setup. This of course, means the spool has more tension (friction) applied to it's axis throughout the entire cast. I haven't tried tossing small lures long distances with the Patriarchs or the Summit. I usually don't make really long casts with such small baits in most instances. I'll have to take your word for it. I will say that I spend way less time fiddling with reel setup on the Patriarchs and JM reels than I did with the Linear mag Revo reels. It makes for a much more enjoyable day when the reels casting tendencies are more forgiving and predictable.

older boat help
Given the age, I'm assuming this is a Starfire model. 1. How are you measuring your speed? Speedometers are terribly inaccurate. Old speedometers are even worse. 2. Starfires were known to rot out due to water getting into the hull from the transom. You may have water logged foam adding way too much weight. 3. Have you had the engine put on a dyno by a tech? How do you know this engine is fully winding all the way out?

want to buy my next baitcaster
Yep. Sleeper reel of the year. Glad I dumped my SX and STX for these babies.

The Revo SX linear mag braking vs the Tried and true 6 pin centrifugal? While I haven't seen the brake mech on the president, I'm betting it's using the same one as the Patriarch. That's a far better braking system than the SX and honestly, a better made centrifugal brake than the one they've got on the Revo S. As for the STX vs the Patriarch? When you consider you've got a nicely functioning 6 pin centrifugal brake AND the mag brake they use, there's no comparison. The Patriarch can be dialed in perfectly vs. the STX which has only the spool tension knob and the relatively ineffective linear mag brake.

I tore apart my Johnny Morris JMX10SC and the Patriarch. The JM reel is physically bigger. Like the difference between a 100 and 200 series Curado. The internal parts though, are very, very similar. The pinion gear slider plate has a slightly different spring setup vs the Patriarch but the parts look identical otherwise. The JM main gear was also larger. The drag stacks appear the same other than the JM's are slightly larger due to the larger main gear. One thing about the Patriarchs. If you're accustomed to using the cross bar as a hook holder DON'T. Larger size hooks have a tendency to become locked when the barb catches over the front of the cross plate. You wind up gouging up the crossplate just above the level wind guide just to get the hook unlocked. I bought a Patriarch used from a member here. The reel was perfect except for a few gouges right above the level wind on the cross plate. I couldn't figure out how they got there...... that is until I used the crossplate as a hook holder when I went out fishing. :-[

Binding in reel handle
Sounds like you broke some teeth off the plastic level wind gear and they're stuck in the main gear teeth. Pull the crank side plate off to verify.

my reason for considering a side image...... sound different???
I remember going from flashers to paper graphs and then to LCD's. The visualization between the flashers and Paper/LCD's was astounding. You had a real visual presentation of the bottom. The side imaging finders, while providing an interesting picture, seem difficult to interpret. At least for me anyway. The problem is, the looks you see in the ads are usually "ideal" conditions much like the LCD demo modes in the store. Getting the thing to display and being able to read it seem like a lot of work and time. Especially considering the price.

How old is your state LMB record?

That it is. If the Revo users would try one of these they'd probably ask themselves why they were wasting their time screwing around with the finicky Revo's when these are available.

Nitro Boat Quality??
It seems like with a Nitro you either got a good one or a really, really bad one. There used to be a website devoted to BPS (mostly Nitro) boat owners complaints. That hasn't been around for a few years but I that doesn't mean the problems aren't happening. The most prominent problems I've seen over the years from numerous owners were gelcoat stress cracking in the top deck especially in corners or edges. Tracker marines tubular trailers had a very bad habit of rusting from the inside out. We're talking trailers just a few years old that needed to be replaced. Fit and finish is not as good as a Ranger, Champion, Triton, Skeeter, etc. Then again, they also don't cost as much either. That said, a Z9 is still priced at $45,000. For that, they'd better be doing a better job at boat building than in the past. Those willing to pay that much for a bass boat have a lot higher expectations.

freight charge?
IIRC, BPS used to have a zone chart that showed delivery charges to anywhere in the US for whatever boat you were getting.. Nitro, Tracker aluminum, etc.

Bass Pro Shops Excel Mono
I've used it in the past as an emergency line if I ran out of the good stuff. Decent line though the bulk spool I had worked out much better for backing than anything.

Watched it today at work. Great game.

Pointers or Xraps?
I use Xraps when the water warms a little. It's a much more effective bait when the fish become more active. Other wise, I'll toss Pointers, Rogues or Husky Jerks. I might have all 3 tied on 3 rods since it seems the fish can be particular at times.

Minn Kota Power Drive2 and Transducer Cable
One of the pitfalls of the power drives (and there are many) is transducer cable placement. I just cable tied mine at the bottom and top. Left some slack. Move around in heavy brush or cover and it'll get hung up from time to time. Just remember if you drill into the shaft and attempt to run the cable up through it, If the bottom hole ever leaks you'll destroy your motor as water will get into the motor head. Then you can go out and buy a cable control TM and not worry about transducer cable routing.

Flush Mount Hinges
If you're talking about home made wood, compartment lid tops, morticing the hinge plates to the tops would give you a near invisible look since you'd barely see the hinge joint above the carpet.

who here misses fishing?
After my last tournament in mid October I stripped stuff out of my boat for the restoration thinking I'd have some mild weather to get a real head start on the job and maybe be finished by Christmas. Yeah, right. It turned too cold after that to use any of the adhesives outside. Not too cold to fish though. I wish I had just waited till mid-end Nov. to put the rods up for the season. I'd probably be just as far along on the job as I am now.
