PREDICT your '06 hawg
I ordered my Cabelas guidegear and need to just get some kind of under armor - any suggestions? Thanks Russ - I feel like a kid waiting to go for the first time. I just realized, I should pick up a RI fishing License too huh?

PREDICT your '06 hawg
As long as it is 1 ounce heavier than the biggest one LBH catches when we fish together in RI in a few weeks! But I'm sure he won't let that happen. LOL PB right now in 6.4 - anything close to that would be awesome. I just love to fish!

Spooling a Baitcaster
Is there a special way to attach the line to the spool on a baitcaster before you start spooling or does it matter. It's my first one, I know it's another rookie question. Thanks All!

Being in the DOG HOUSE
The next time this happens - tell her you're thinking about getting a sex change operation - Let her freak out for a bit and then tell her you're not really gonna do that - now tell her you over spent a bit on some fishing equipment - she will be relieved and happy that's all it is.

The Magic Lure
I only rig them skirt up, I don't know what situation you would want to rig them the other way for. Colors should depend on water clarity, where I fish it's pretty clear so I use natural colors, green pumkin, water melon seed and sometimes motor oil all with different colored specs in them. If you fish stained water, you might want to try darker colors. Go on the Yamamoto sight to see the different colors.

The Magic Lure
The Fat Ika has been my go to bait since RW talked about them last year. I also think you get a better ratio of hook sets that you do with a senko, just because they inhale the IKA and sometimes the senko is picked up by the tail only. The other thing is that they really don't let that thing go. I also rig them skirt up with a 3/0 or 4/0 red ewg gammie. They are a little tricky to rig at first and like all Yamamoto baits the break apart very easily. I always carry lock tite from walmart and you can repair a small tear pretty quickly and get it right back in the water. Lastly you can throw them a mile un weighted.

Heck Russ, most of the time I see the pictures you post wearing no shirt at all. What you really need to do is get that logo tatooed on your back! LOL Nice Job Russ, keep up the good work. I have a post to you under Regions (Ct, RI MA)

best tip ever?
Fish as often as you can with people who are more experienced and just plain better fisherman than you are. That is how I was able to become a better golfer. You'll be amazed at what you can learn from them.

Rookie Question : Secondary Point
I'm sure this is obvious to most, but I read an article where he referred to swimming a jig over secondary points after the spawn. What is a Secondary Point? As Always Thanks!

Break up you day in 3 sections
If you broke up your fishing day in three sections. Let's say you get there just before dawn - what you you be using? Then a few hrs later the sun has come up and you make a change - what's next? Now its noon time and you've got another 3 hours to fish. What then. I know this is filled with variables temp, time of year, water color etc etc. Let's just say an 80 degree June or July day, little wind, bluebird skies, clear water, ample amounts of cover and structure. I'm sure many guys have a routine they go with on most days. Maybe Topwaters & Spinnerbaits early Followed by soft plastics and jerk baits And then maybe deep cranks and some Carolina Riggin I'm just curious because I haven't established a routine yet and would just like to get your imput. Please remember I know there are millions of variables, but I still think that a lot of you have routines you follow for most conditions. Thanks for the Help!

Painful to lose Expensive Baits
Ben You missed my point. I didn't say I can't afford or I'm scared or I get stressed when I use an expensive lure. All I said was that is painful to lose an expensive lure and it's too bad there wasn't a better type of split ring to accomplish that. An expensive lure to some fisherman is a 3.00 Norman, it's all relative. I'm pretty sure when you lose one of you're 3.00 lures you don't laugh about it. And I'm also sure that the materials, hooks and engineering in a lucky craft lure are far superior than a 3.00 lure. I wanted to try acouple of Mattlures swim baits, but at $20 a pop, and it will be painful to lose one, but I'm still gonna try it.

Big Bass Zone Book
I guess because I am newer to fishing, I look at it a bit differently. I catch a lot of fish between 2 and 5 lbs (obviously more 2 & 3's). When I have a 2lber on, my heart still races and I feel like a kid (which I am far removed from) and I never get sick or bored to catch this size fish. We usually get several almost ever time out. To just fish for monsters and possibly not catch anything for weeks at a time would defeat the whole purpose for me. I love to be in my boat with my buddy and just have a good time. I'll leave the monsters to those with more patience and still have the thrill of a lifetime catching those 2 to 5 lbers. Obviously this is just my opinion and the best of luck to those who fish for Moby Dick!

Painful to lose Expensive Baits
It's too bad there isn't some kind of split ring you could put on your expensive (or any bait) that when given enough pressure would come un done and give you back your $20 swim bait or $17 Lucky Craft to name a few. I suppose to do this, you would also take a chance on losing fish as you put pressure on them as well. Guess you can't have one without the other.

Neat tricks
When I use a drop shot rig instead of using a weight, I use a jig as my weight and tie a 4 1/2 Curly tail Roboworm about 18" above it.

snagging illigal?
I don't think think I have ever gone fishing without Snagging! Unfortunately it's usually boat docks, trees, boat covers, stumps, pads, my partner, myself, you know the usual stuff. But never would I snag a Fish!!!!!! Good Job Young Man!

when is your weakest time to fish
Probably January & February when the ice on the ponds are about a foot thick. I throw out a heavy spinnerbait, but it never actually gets into the water until sometime in April. Fortunately I have a lot of patience! My spinnerbait should be getting wet in about 6 more weeks, I can't wait! Other than that, I have a hard time finding fish during July & August in the heat of the day.

Something everyone can use...Class in session
In the Spring when the fish are relatively shallow my favorite is a Fat Ika rigged skirt up with a 3/0 extra wide red gammie. I use a Shimano Stradic and BPS Extreme 6'6" med with 6lb clear Yo-Zuri Ulta soft line. I use either Green Pumkin or pumkin seed and let it fall on slack line with an occasional jigging motion every now and then. All courtesy of RW and it has worked great for me on the east coast in relatively clear water.

Carolina Rig Tip from Dave Stewart (Guide in KY)
I went to the Sportsmens show in Worcester, MA last night and met a guide from Kentucky who also brings the Hawg Trough to the different shows around the country. He was talking about various techniques and patterns he has used over the years. He started talking about Carolina Rigging and how he and most anglers do not use the correct method. He said most anglers will fish it like a Texas rig and hold the rod fairly upright on slack line and jig it once in a while. He said you have to be pretty lucky to ever know you have a fish on, most times the fish will pick it up swim a little and spit it out and you won't ever know it. He was told the key to Carolina Rigging is keeping the rod tip close to the water on relatively tight line so you can feel the weight and use more of a dragging motion to move the bait verses jigging it. This technique will make it very easy to feel a strike. I don't Carolina Rig much, but I just thought I would pass this along to the members on this forum in case it might be of some help! Jimmy Houston was also at the show and I talked with him for about ten minutes - he seems like such a regular guy and I have been a fan of his for so long that I hated to hear about that hunting incident - I just hope there was more to it and it isn't as it appears.

Schooled By D.B.
I watch Charlie Moore because he is local for me and fishes some of the same places I go which is kinda neat. Once he went to Lake Shirley and caught a nice one in front of my Father-in-law's camp. It's really pretty cool when you watch a show and recognize exactly where he is on the lake. On the other hand, he can drive you nuts with his dancing, singing and bad jokes. More fishing Charlie and less entertainment! He is going to be at the Sportmans Show in Worcester Feb 10th - Maybe I should tell him! LOL I should also tell him he needs to fish against the Hooker!
