My Toughest Tournament Ever
Great report. Last weekend there was a tournament on Buggs Island. My friend's friend fished it and caught a 7.5 pound lady in the first hour. He followed up with a nice 4-pounder a half hour later. Then no bites for the rest of the day. His coangler got one bite around 1:30 and landed a small keeper. No other bites for him for the rest of the day, too. So overall, you did fantastic on a day Buggs shut down and other lakes suffered from the weather. We are all proud of your tournament accomplishments. Keep up the good work.

Tipptruck, where you be?
Norfolk Naval Shipyard has intern programs to teach you a trade you can use at the shipyard. Check with Wdycrankbait as he used to work at the shipyard and he knows about it. I will send him a text to contact you. There is a great guy who works at the shipyard and the shipyard is putting him through ODU to get his degree. I will leave him a text to get back to you with the details. Good luck.

What have you learned this month?
I learned this month that it is too darn cold to fish in Virginia. I learned this month that March weather in Virginia is all messed up. I learned this month that our whole house generator works. I learned this month that we are due for another big storm, with mostly rain and wind, this weekend. I learned this month that it is OK to sit in my man cave surrounded by my fishing tackle and baits and watch sports and Colombo reruns on TV. P.S. Being from south Louisiana any outside temperature under 70* is cold and it could snow.

Best advice for a new bass angler?
Go to the top of this page under Tools and look up the Fishing Log. Download it. Make copies. Complete one every time you hit the water. Retain them in a three-ring binder for future reference and review, especially during the winter months. Consider making a matrix of your design and chart the weather, water temperature, water clarity, fish caught, wind, cloudy or clear days, warm or cold front situations, baits used, techniques used, did you use MegaStrike or JJ's Magic, hook sizes, weights, etc. This is a fantastic learning method and you can parlay the data into the future to improve on your technique and bait selections. Now do as the guys penned above and go out and catch some fish!!!!

Darn storm
Yep. A large portion of the US to get hit again. Be patience. There are reasons for everything. You will find them out sooner or later. And please post some pics of your new boat. Stay warm! You may want to get Wxrisk.com on Facebook. Dave usually calls the storms 99% correct. Here is his first guess map regarding the two storms: https://www.wxrisk.com/the-wxrisk-com-snowstorm-page/ Enjoy!

2018 GEICO BASSMASTER CLASSIC
Sideways, I did not go the the weigh-in as I was having too much fun at the exhibition hall and my wife was picking me up around 5 to meet Glenn and the guys for dinner. I understand the weigh-in is a blast and there are lots of seats. If you get there when the doors open you should be fine.

Need fish finder advice, please.
Raymarine has some fantastic units. The problem is that each year the companies introduce "new and improved" models, like what Lowrance did this year. As long as the model is easy for you to understand and use you will enjoy the electronics. Good luck and have fun comparing the units and driving your self crazy.

Odd hook-up. Teachable moment?
Sometimes you win and sometimes the fish win. It goes with the territority. Sort of like baseball. With "chop" on the water go with a spinnerbait or Chatterbait. And the weather conditions you described seem to be a cold front moving through your area. Cold fronts can shut down the bass or, either right before they hit or as they pass through, turn on those green monsters to feed and become aggressive. In Oklahoma I bet the water temperature is under 60*. If so, the bass are deep and are just holding waiting for an easy meal along with the water temperature to hit 60* so they can start moving up for the spawn. So don't take it personally. Just re-rig and hit that pond again and again and again and you will figure out where they hide and in what conditions. One more suggestion: above this thread at the top of the page is a listing of various topics starting with Home and moving to your right to Links. Open the one that reads Tools and you will see, listed second, a Fishing Log. Download and print that fishing log and start keeping it for every trip you make to the pond. Keep it in a three-ring binder and sooner or later you will see the various patterns based on the water temperature, water clarity, time of year, weather conditions and other variables including the baits you were throwing and your presentations. Good luck and get ready for OU to face LSU in the BCS National Championship game this coming season.

Can Bass Hear Rattles in Your Baits?
Burro, take it one step further: why do the bass hit our baits when most of our baits don't look like natural food?????

This is the Truth!
- Why do the older legendary pros struggle to compete ? ?
Turtle, I remember how I fished every body of water I fish now. If I can't recall everything, I have paper maps that I have recorded my and my fishing partners' places where we caught them. I am planning to hit Lake Gaston in April and already know how I will be fishing it based on past experiences. Right or wrong, this is the way I fish as I have confidence in the fact that the last times on Lake Gaston I caught them at specific locations. Now for the guys who have not fished Lake Gaston in the past or fished it a few times, I expect them to run down to the dam area. Where will I go? Not far from the launch site on Poplar Creek. But I ain't telling.- What will the next improvements to Trolling Motors and Shallow Water Anchors be?
- New guy from PA
Nice having you with us, Garrett. What is nice about this site is that you can ask the guys who fish in the various states you enjoy for their specific input. Be sure to post some pics for us to see as you fish up and down the coast.- What will the next improvements to Trolling Motors and Shallow Water Anchors be?
- Why do the older legendary pros struggle to compete ? ?
I am going to take on this topic from another point of view. Last month I read an article about guys doing the same thing on bodies of water they had fished in the past. The article pointed out that what happened the last time they fished a specific body of water they had good results. So when the old pros go back to the bodies of water they have fished in the past they do the same thing, including visiting the same spots they had success. But things change and by the time they change their pattern or location it is too late. They run out of time or can't find the fish again. Just a different perspective on why the older guys may not be doing that well against the younger guys who have no perceived concepts about the lakes and river they fish.- Best Soft Plastic Colors for In-between Water
Green Pumpkin with Black Flake.- Whopper plopper. . .why the hype??
The Whooper Plooper makes a different sound and vibration than your buzzbait, frog, or popper. Monkey Butt.- The sickness got me!
Bummer. Sorry to read about you and your family having the flu. Chicken soup. Drink a lot of chicken soup. For some unknown reason, it will help. Stay in bed and watch Family Feud. Good show to pass the time between naps.- Dogwoods already in bloom in Richmond?
It happens to all of us. I used to get them confused, too. Give the dogwoods another 30-days and hit the water in search of the beds.- How much pound flouro most used?
Look at your specific rod's specifications as they relate to line test. Add the numbers together and divide by 2. That is the line test you should be throwing. However, since there are no rules in bass fishing, you can throw any line test you have confidence. For me, it is mostly 12 pounds on baitcasters and 8 on spinning reels. What ever you like best and have confidence it will perform for you is the correct line test.- Dogwoods already in bloom in Richmond?
Those pink and white blossoms are not dogwoods. They are cherry blossoms. Easy to get confused between the two. When the dogwood in my front yard blooms you can be sure I will tell the world!!!! - Why do the older legendary pros struggle to compete ? ?
