Wow! Having honest officials who actually call holding really made a difference in the Missysippy State-Bamasux game. Closer than anyone imagined. Wonder what will happen when Bamasux travels to Awbunn in two weeks. Should be interesting.

Wonderful you are back with us and on the water. Yes, teaching someone how to bass fish is very nerve racking. You have to have the patience of an angel. Since you brought up teaching someone about bass fishing, maybe the guys can start another thread asking for stories regarding instructing someone how to bass fish or giving them some secrets. For example, went to my favorite barber, Roger, for my haircut and we talked about fishing. He usually fishes for saltwater fish off the beach and then Sac-a-Lait and bream from his aluminum boat in the upper Historic James River. He was telling me that his son casts a baitcaster so easily and he is having a difficult time learning how to use one. So after my haircut I went to my car and retrieved my baitcasting rig and went back into the shop and showed him, and two other guys waiting for haircuts, how to "balance the rod, reel, line test and bait weight" to avoid backlashes. None of these three guys who fish realized that there were parameters stamped on rods. And they had no idea of how to "balance" the rig to avoid backlashes. I am sure they will hit the water ASAP and give it a try. Your story?????

Dad, there is a reason we call her "One Fish Anna." Look for the cleanest water you can find. With the rain this week some creeks may be a little dirty. So look for the clean and warmer water. If you can find the shad in the creeks you will find the bass. Sexy Shad 1.5's and Silver Buddies mimic the shad and are good ones to try to locate the bass and then get them to strike your baits. Yo-Yo the Silver Buddies. White spinnerbaits will be thrown all over the place by everyone. And in the early morning, don't forget your buzzbaits. White or black skirts. You are right to hit the boat houses, docks and piers in the creeks. Most of the grass may be dead so don't put your money on the grass. However, if you see some green grass go for it!!!! As for plastics, who knows? Maybe you will find some bass holding shallow depending on the water clarity and temperatures. Otherwise, you will have to go after them in deeper water. Good luck and have some fun although the temperatures will be low for this weekend. Dress warm.

Yes. Richmond Bassmasters takes both boaters and nonboaters as members. They meet at Debbie's Kitchen in Henrico County on the 4th Wednesday of each month with two exceptions: November - Meet week before to avoid the Thanksgiving holiday. (November 15th this year) December - No meeting, other than the tournament committee getting together to plan the new trail. Dues include the national and state BASS club dues of $65, plus the club's own $45 for a total of $110. The optional annual Big Fish Pot is only $6 so the guys usually go with $116. You will get Bassmasters Magazine when you join. I am not sure about Bass Times so you can ask BASS when you join. You have to be a member of BASS, too. If you go as a nonboater the fee is $50 to the boater per day. Great value when you consider you have a friendly guide that will discuss his baits and techniques plus places to fish with you. Fishing 8 tournaments this year. May go back to 10 in 2018. Club has to decide. There are two optional pots for each tournament: 1st, 2nd and 3rd places; big fish. I think they are $10 for the tournament places and $5 for big fish. If you want to join you can come to the November meeting or wait for the January meeting. You will learn a lot plus know where to launch your boat which can be a challenge if you have never been to that body of water. There are a number of clubs in BASS Region 3 and Region 6. Other than for Richmond, they do not take nonboaters and you will need to have a partner to fish their tournaments. Check out the "Links" section at the top of this page for Bass Clubs and look for the FLW and BASS Federations in Virginia. I know the Virginia BASS Federation has a listing of all of its clubs. Not sure about the FLW. Tournaments start in early March on Lake Gaston or Buggs Island. Most clubs try to get the lakes out of the way before school is out to avoid the idiots on the water. We then fish the rivers until school opens and then catch up on the lakes. Give me a call when you can.

68, sorry to say that I don't know of any ponds between the Marymount park and downtown. However, please get a copy of the 2017 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet and note the places north and south of the Historic James River where you can fish. You should find a copy at Green Top, Bass Pro Shop, Dick's or your favorite tackle shop. Some guys will walk down to the river by the Nickel Bridge and fish the Historic James River. Wdycrankbait is one of these guys and I will ask him to give you the details. Be sure to ask him about snakes even though the Richmond cold weather probably has put them into hibernation. 68, hate to tell you this but Swan and Shields lakes are terrible. Very few fish. The city holds it free fishing day the first weekend in June at Shields and the kids may nail a bream or ring perch. But no bass or trout. Then the city, in its infantine wisdom, stocks Shields with trout the weekend after the free fishing event. Go figure. You can continue to give it a shot but I don't think you will score any bass. If you do, please let me know.

The Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, Virginia ponds are now off limits to all but club members. The ponds were stocked with trout and to fish them you need a club pass. Club passes will be given to club members, only. Bummer.

When the wind blows the Potomac is a beautiful white cap lake. The weather can turn on a dime and it can be extremely dangerous on the Potomac, no matter the size of your watercraft. Same is true for the big creeks off the main river. And no matter what size boat you have always check the weather and keep an eye on it while on the water. I have an 18 and half foot Ranger and will not challenge the Potomac when it is angry.

Anytime you can purchase a book to learn new techniques, etc. you will strengthen your bass fishing as opposed to buying baits. Ike is a great bass fishing industry ambassador. I suggest one day you try to make one of his seminars. Worth every penny.

Yes, losing to Alabama for a seventh straight time is a hard pill to swallow, but these Tigers, and Tiger Fans, have nothing to hang their heads about. To the contrary, I’m awfully proud of the fight and determination these Tigers showed as they gave Alabama their toughest test of the season. Alabama had a clear advantage in depth, experience, and quarterback play, but LSU showed that they’re not that far behind and a solid recruiting class or two could bring the Tigers right back up to the Tide’s level. As Coach Orgeron said in his post-game comments, “We’re coming. And we ain’t backing down.”

Ger, go to Dance's tackle shop by Southpark Mall, Dick's, Green Top or Bass Pro Shop south of Ashland and pick up a free copy of the 2017 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet. Ask the people at Dance's about local places to fish and the suggestions below. They are very nice people. There is a geographical section on each part of the Commonwealth listing places to fish in the booklet. And Google "Colonial Heights Fishing" to see what comes up. Check with Dance's about fishing the Appomattox River under the I-95 bridge and any private locations in Petersburg. But be careful as Petersburg can be dangerous. There used to be a private pond that charged you to fish. It is around the Southpark Mall. Sorry, but never went there nor do I know if they are still in business. Ask the Dance's people and others to find out if it is open. The Vulcan ponds are an option. Make sure you have permission to fish them. Henricus Park has fishing. Check it out. People fish for catfish at Dutch Gap on the Historic James River. Try Osborne Landing pier on the Historic James River. You can drive to Ed. Allen's on Chickahominy Lake and rent a small skiff or fish off of their long pier. You will need a map of Virginia to find these places. And thank you for your service. Are you a chef???????
