JB, Your experience is why I carry extra reels with me when I fish. It is easier to change out a reel than to lose and entire rig if a reel fails. I do not own any Flooger spinning reels but Flooger is a good company so give them a call and maybe they will make the repairs for free. If not, then send it to the Reel Mechanic for a fast and lasting fix. P.S. I guess this is why I have only Shimano reels other than one Flooger President baitcaster and an Ambassador for salt water fishing.

George hit it on the head, as usual. Here is the major concern of standard insurance carriers. From the prespective of physical damage to your boat, it is totally depreciated. This means that there is no "value" to the hull and therefore the insurance carrier cannot properly price the coverage or estimate the hull's value. Since the boat is 27+ years old, any loss would be a "total" or a "constructive total" loss and the insurance company would have a problem setteling the claim as the value of the boat would be zero. Now, if you vlaue the boat as an antique, since it is over 20 years old; get a formal hull appraisal; meet underwriting requirements which may include a sea-worthy certificate, known as a Survey; you can then insure the boat for its appraised value and recover up to that amount if the boat is damaged or destroyed. I hope this explains the situation to you and maybe we have a marine underwriter on the forum that can go into deeper details from an insurance standpoint. However, if the carrier George suggests will insure the boat for physical damage I suggest you transfer the pure risk exposure to the insurance company. Also be sure to have at least $1,000,000 of Liability insurance on your boat. The cost is very small after the first $100,000 liability premium and strange things happen on the water all the time.

You have some great choices within 50 miles of Richmond so do not limit yourself to the Historic James River. If you have the GMCO maps you can find these places to launch your boat. Lower James River Dutch Gap; Hopewell Marina; Osborne Landing Upper James River Watkins Landing Pony Pasture for Smallmouths Dutch Gap and Osborne Landing place you just east of Richmond. Hopewell Marina gives you easy access to the James and Appomattox Rivers. If you can make it to Herring Creek give it a try. Lake Chesdin Seven Springs Marina; Public Ramp in Dinwiddie County across from Seven Springs. Pamunkey River Williams Landing in New Kent County. Lake Anna Sturgeon Landing; Anna Marina. Ponds Innsbrook Area, especially Lake Rook after you cross Nuckols Road on Cox Road. If you want to venture out a little, Sandy River Reservoir is a good place for trolling motor fishing. Briery Creek south of Farmville is also a good spot. Search this site for the names of the aforementioned rivers, lakes and ponds to see what you can find. If you can get a color map of Richmond you can find other places to fish from the bank. When fishing the James River, please be very careful. It is an unforgiving body of water with sand bars and mud flats so it is imperative that you check the tide charts before venturing out to fish any tidal river in the vicinity. As Ike says.... Mono for treble hook baits and topwaters. Flourocarbon and copoly for anything. Braid for frogs, deep water and heavy cover. So why are you using mono for Senkos and plastics? Where is oyr 6' 6" medium heavy graphit rod with a fast action tip? What size reel were you using and did you fill the spool within an eighth of an inch from the top? Did you balance your rod, line and bait as per the rod's specifications? Believe it or not, the specs on the rod are there for a reason. So try again using Ike's line rules; your own rod and reel; and you will have more successful results. Maybe.

OK, so we all agree the loss is awful and the items stolen will probably never be recovered. Glenn stated that we need to protect our equipment on our boats, trucks and trailer. I totally agree as we are "sitting targets" for people who do not hold the same high principals of fair play and honesty as us fishermen do. So we can only transfer so much to others, be it an insurance company, a rich relative or under a contractural arrangement. This means we must assume part of any loss and therefore protect our property the best we can. I am taking Glenn's suggestions very seriously as I do not protect my trailer wheels or my motor's prop. Or my trolling motor. And all I can do is lock the boat's cabinets other than the battery compartment which can be opened by anyone at any time. One of the items I may purchase is an alarm that is placed on motel room doors so it will activate when moved. If we place these types of alarms in our boat or in a compartment they will sound an alarm to notify us of a problem. Remember, the three things that thieves hate are light, sound and things that impede their speed thereby adding time to their criminal activity. Although this is not the first post discussing the loss of fishing equipment to third-parties, it is time for us to protect ourselves and equipment from the perks. Sometimes it is difficult to understand how these things happen but somehow there is a Master Plan that we are all players and for some reason we get stronger from these losses. No, never use as PFD or wear a helmet. I am very cautious when walking in the James River as it is very unforgiving around the rocks and boulders so I wear a PFD. But it is still very dangerous. Tragic story but I can see how it can happen.

Please gas up all vehicles. Move cars and boats away from trees. If possible, put them in a shopping center parking lot away from trees and building signs. Have canned food. Have a manual can opener. This is vital during a storm. Get and store as much ice as you can. Get bottled water. Make sure propane tanks are full for grill. Do not open freezer doors unless it is absolutely necessary other than to put extra ice on the items. Eat all ice cream today and tomorrow. If you have any ice chests, put refregerator items in them when you lose power. If you do not lose power, be thankful. Have chainsaw, hammer, etc.where you can get it. If there is a possibility of trees falling in driveway, move vehicles to a safe place, as said above. Have all Rx prescriptions up to date and on hand plus your first aid kit. Have a battery operated radio and if possible, a TV. We have a B&W which was a mistake. We need to get a color set. Have cell phones charged. And that is for starters! I guess being from Louisiana and living through a number of hurricanes you get used to putting your supplies together.

I still cannot get through the NOLA cell phone lines to contact family and friends. I tried calling LSU but no one answered at the Alumni Association and my friend's cell line just rang and rang and rang. No idea if the power is off in Baton Rouge but heard that half of NOLA is without power and no one is being allowed back at this time. I am trying to find out if Jefferson Parish is open and has power. Glad everyone is OK.
