  1. haha thats awesome! thats somethin ill have to try soon. i really like these hooks and wanted somethin a lil different, just wanted to see what others thought. thanks for the reply smalljaw
  2. what do you guys think of these for football jigs?
  3. you can use 50 lb braid and be just fine, everyone says no you need 65, bs, 50 does just fine. any time im flippin/pitchin/punchin i use a straight shank hook like the gammy heavy cover or paycheck punch hook. i dont like ewgs for that purpose. you can use beaver style baits or whatever you want really, i dont feel that you have to only use one style bait or whatever. use a work, creature, whatever. depending on how thick the grass is you can use anywhere from 3/4-2oz weights. pitch it in the holes of the mat or right through. let it sink to the bottom, yoyo it up a couple times or just give it a few good "thumps" with the rod. if a fish is there shes gonna kill your bait. you can use jigs but i prefer t rigged baits with a punch skirt. every jig ive used for punchin ends up comin out with junk on it. my equipment; i use a powell max 806c paired with an lews tournament mg and 50lb sunline fx2 braid, a 3/4-2oz tungsten sinker pegged with a rubber bobber stop, paycheck baits punch skirt, ri bmf hook, and whatever soft plastic bait i feel like using. this set up is fire all around my area and at the cali delta so im sure itd work for you.
  4. what is your ideal punch rod/setup? also do you think a 7'10"-8' rod is absolutely necessary for punching?
  5. anyone use em? if so what do you think about em? just ordered some to try em out but want to see if anyone here likes em.
  6. yea thats the only way ive fished em. theyre great baits and fish destroy these things! i love em. you can fish em any way you want, try em, think outside the box. theres no rule that says you have to fish any given bait a certain way.
  7. my advice, go with sunline. youll get a ton of people on here sayin seaguar but ive had so many break offs on hooksets with that stuff its ridiculous. sunline sniper is by far the best fluoro ive ever used. i think youll love it if you try it.
  8. one of the best, if not the absolute best knot for fluoro is the shark knot. look it up on youtube, zonas shark knot. easy and super strong. as for a braid to leader knot, i prefer the alberto. never have had any issues with that knot, even when hookin into a 20# channel cat and landin her. i use sunline sniper, the best fluoro ever made imo. ive had waaaay too many break offs with seaguar so ill never waste my money on that stuff ever again.
  9. i just about won a recent tournament on flukes. i had a ton of strikes and capitalized on all but one. like stated above, reel all the slack down and set hard. if theyre on a fluke bite chances are theyre goin to inhale that sucker so hook ups shouldnt be an issue. i use 4/0 gammy ewg's and never have a problem. dont bury the point of the hook so deep, just skin hook it enough to where its weedless but still able to punch through easy when you set. what rod reel and pound test line were you using?
  10. oh yea for you guys having trouble dialing in your lews, you dont need to hard whippin cast like you would with other reels, those things are so smooth it doesnt take much effort to make a long cast. i usually adjust the spool tension knob, then have the mag brakes set at like 4 or 5 and can cast a weightless fluke a mile. theyre not that hard to dial in.
  11. i think in 10 years lews reels will still be kickin butt. theyre built every bit as good as shimanos if not better now and they are the og of low pro baitcasters.
  12. i think it does to an extent. bass, fish in general dont smell like we smell. ive had grreeaat success with megastrike and pro cure. i use it almost all the time. i have noticed that fish hold on longer which in turn allows you to get a "second" chance if you dont feel her the first time she takes the bait and it gets you a few more bites. not all scents are created equal so choose wisely. my recommendatios, megastrike, pro-cure, pookees, and smelly jelly.
  13. ive seen a lot of people switch out all their shimanos to lews after tryin one lol
  14. your rod, reel, and line should be just fine but if the water is a bit clear you could run a fluoro leader, not necessary cus i dont really think the fish care but you can do so. for your retrieve, yea make a long cast and let the jig sink to the bottom, strip line off your reel so the jig falls straight down not at a pendulum torwards you. once it hits bottom, take up all the slack, put your rod tip low, start a slow steady sweep. i usually drag it about a foot then pause, take up slack, then do it again. you can drag it more than a foot or less and you can drag it fast if you want, just let the fish tell you how they want it.
  15. theyre not bad at all. i use an older extreme spinning rod with a pq spinning reel for dropshotting and i feel everything just fine. theyre good rods for the money. im sure the new models or just as good or better.
  16. some jigs come with a bait keeper i guess, like you would see on a jig head for a hula grub. others have some unique way of doin so like the jewel bait j lock. if by some chance im using a jig without a keeper ill put a drop of loctite super glue gel on the trailer and push it up against the head, works good too.
  17. i think a lews would be better to see in that box lol
  18. lol i dont always do a sweep set, i do blast the fish sometimes. if im draggin in deep water i usually use the sweep set but still hit em pretty hard. shallow water and those fish are losin their eyes lol
  19. thanks mumpy. im tellin you man, i loooove jigs! lol this past weekend i fished a tournament, bass were bustin shad so i was throwin a fluke and killin em! the whole time i kept lookin down at that jig wanting to throw it out there and drag it for some of those bigger bites. i didnt end up throwin it until later in the day and it caught my big fish which helped me to get a 2nd place finish. jigs are amazing all year around. oh yea and as for hooksets with an fb jig. just reel down slack and give it semi fast sweep to the side, hooks em everytime. chances are that fish is goin to pick up that jig, turn around, and start swimmin away with it so you dont need to blast him and risk blowin that jig out of his mouth.
  20. nice! i loove punchin its so much fun. whered you get the sinkers and skirts from?
  21. ive become a jig fishin fool over the past year. all i wanna do is chunk n drag a football jig if i can, flip or pitch a jig, swim a jig, i love jigs!! check this out, football jigs: drag em with a slow steady pull to the side, drag about a foot so but your retrieve can vary. my favorite and best place to drag a fb jig is rocky points, not huge chunk rock but smaller chunk and pea gravel. keep it simple man, brown jigs and various natural colored trailers kill! 99% of the time im throwin a brown jig with another natural colored trailer and have no problem catchin fish, big fish. yamamoto double tail grubs are just about all i use when draggin a fb jig. if the water is really stained ill go to a black and blue or black and red with matching trailer. ive been throwin a cali 420 colored jig and trailer for a bit now but thats still a pretty natural color. sizes: 1/2, 3/4, and 1 oz with 1/2 bein my most used. flippin/pitchin jigs are an arky or bullet style head with a stout hook in the same sizes with various trailers. as for a jig rod, go with a powell 753. it was specifically desiged by jared lintner and powell to fish football jigs but is also great for every other style of jig and flippin/pitchin. this rod is by far the best jig rod ive ever used, ever. ive used dobyns, loomis, irod, ect and wasnt impressed. this rod is remarkably light for a big rod and the balance is amazing! its suuuper sensitive and powerful. hooked a 7.5 pounder and had no trouble bringin her in. just keep it simple, dont over analyze cus it just makes you go crazy and confuses you. fishing a jig isnt all that complicated so dont complicate it. throwin em and put your spin on fishin em and youll be just fine.
  22. dont do it. i had a 735c and that thing cost me too many fish, even when blastin the fish. the tip is too soft for a med hvy rating imo. its a nice rod but not worth 250 and not worth the hype. id suggest goin with a powell endurance 725, awesome rod or even a phenix recon 7'1" heavy. those things are insane!!!!
  23. nice fish man! i was goin to get a powell endurance 702 and a lews speed spin reel today.
  24. do you guys and gals think a 200 size spinning reel would be too small to use for drop shotting? i ask because the tournament this weekend is on a lake that has some florida strain slounch donkeys (thank you zona =) ) and i dont want to be under powered if by some chance i hook into an 8+. so yea, what do you guys think?
