Hook Emergency
I've thankfully only had to do the string trick on myself twice. Once I was able to do it myself as it was in my leg. The 2nd I had to have my brother in law (doctor) help me since it was on the back of my hand and I couldn't press down on the shank of the hook to get the right angle to yank the hook out with the string. He had never heard of the string trick and he was telling me I was going to have to go to the ER. I told him just to yank the string as hard as he could when I pushed down on the shank of the hook. He did and it popped right out. He was amazed it worked like it did, and was even more amazed on how little blood actually came out afterwards. I did have another where I was by myself out on a remote lake and got a LC Pointer hook in the back of my thumb right behind the thumbnail. I couldn't get a good angle on the hook as it went through the nail under the cuticle for the string trick to work. I eventually was able to wiggle it enough and it finally came out without catching the barb as it came out somehow. It hurt a lot, and I ended up with a hole in my thumbnail as it grew out for the next several months.

Does anyone else feel like they catch more quantity in current but more quality off of rock banks in slower moving water?
Big river fish don't get big by hanging out in slack water where the food isn't. Most of my big river fish have been in current breaks or some sort of cover near faster moving water. The 4 1/2lber in my avatar came from the only laydown in the area I was fishing at that time and there was fast water about 3' away. She was sitting in the slow water wafting for whatever bait was moving by in the faster water, which just so happened to be my gurgle toad.

Effects of cicadas on fishing ?
The problem I see with the brood hatches of cicadas is the fish eat like kings so they have no interest in anything you throw mimicking a cicada that has fallen into the water because they are full. Years with normal cicadas would be better I think because it would be more of a random occurrence of one falling in the water.

Thoughts on buffs and gloves in the summer
What? If you care what people think of what you are wearing when you are fishing, you probably shouldn't be fishing. I cover from head to toe when I fish with long pants, long sleeve shirt, face gaiter, gloves and a hat. I hate having to put on sunscreen when I'm fishing because A. it's a pain to put on, B. it makes my hands greasy, C. I usually forget to put it on before it's too late, and D. it's a pain to put on. I'm really fair skinned and burn easily so I like to stay covered up.

best fluke-style bait for weightless skipping?
I don't know if they are any more dense than the ones mentioned above or not, I just like the action they have on them better, but I use Big Bite Baits Jerk Minnow. No clue if they skip better or not though. They do have an awesome shimmy to them as they sink that makes the tail flutter back and forth. Oh yeah, and $2.99/pack doesn't hurt either.

do you have a Nemesis body of water? one you kinda "hate"?
Lake of the Ozarks by far. I only get out there once or twice a year so that doesn't help, but I haven't ever had a great day on that lake. A few bass here and there, but there are so many boat docks to hold bass it's hard to pick and choose which ones to hit in the limited amount of time I've spent there. That and if you are caught out on a weekend too late into the day a bass boat gets absolutely hammered by the pleasure boat traffic waves. Heard of Haulover Inlet in south Florida? LOZ makes that place look like a joy ride on a busy weekend mid day.

The Fishing pant; (outside the box). SWIM TIGHTS?!
I wear the light weight fishing pants with the zip off legs that make them into shorts. Super breathable and they dry quickly if I want to take a dip to cool off.

Latest Catch Pics Thread
Had a tough morning on my in-laws pond and the bass just weren’t having anything to do with what I was throwing so I went inside until after lunch. High sun upper 80’s air temps, so what did I put on. A whopper plopper of course. There’s a shallow flat that drops off into deeper water and usually that’s where the fish hang out in the mornings. But. It this morning. So I tossed the WP as far as I could put across the flat. Bam. 2.5lber first cast. Then I caught 9 more in the next half hour all over 2lbs with the biggest pushing 3lbs. Pretty much every cast I was getting bit. So I went in and told my 9yo daughter I found where some bass we’re if she wanted to catch one. She hadn’t really caught one over 2lbs before. So we went out and there cast it out and let her reel it in. And she caught this one. 2.98lbs. And then caught two more. She was pretty excited.

Boats are a pain to own?
Our local fishing forum boat mechanic guru has said many times he hasn't seen a 4-stroke motor out live it's original set of spark plugs yet. That's not good. He also posts up this video a lot about how tough 2 strokes can be. (157) Are Yamaha Outboards Tough? - YouTube 4 strokes are nice and quiet and they sip the gas, but seems they don't last long.

Jerkbaits in warmer water?
Watch KVD during a tournament. He usually has a jerkbait tied on. He just works it differently in warmer temps. He's a machine when it comes to jerkbait fishing.

2 shot club
Got my 2nd Moderna on March 10th. 102 Fever, chills and sweats the night I got the shot but was just tired the following day. I'm ready for this thing to get over. Was nice seeing family yesterday for Easter with all of us having been vaccinated now.

Can I use clip on barrel weights clipped on unweighted swimbait hooks?
I’ve seen people use a split shot weight crimped onto the shank of a hook to weigh it down also.

New to kayak. Scupper holes?
The only scuppers I have plugs in are the ones under my rear end. The plugs I use are self bailing though and have a valve in them so they let water out. It don’t let it in. Scuppers should be designed so when the boat it moving the fluid dynamics of the water moving under the kayak will actually suck the water out of the top and drain the kayak. You won’t sink either since the kayak has way more than buoyancy than the amount of water coming in.

The official "Who's drinking tonight?" thread
About a 6 hour drive. Probably worth the drive though. That stuff is good. That’s kind of like Jefferson’s Ocean. They pack the barrels on a freight ship and off they go on a voyage around the oceans. Can go to their website and put the barrel number in and it will tell you where all it went. Does it make for a better bourbon? Eh, not the bottle I’ve tried. Jefferson’s Reserve is better.

The official "Who's drinking tonight?" thread
I've gotten into bourbon sipping this past year for the obvious reasons. Always liked to dabble in it but never really understood it until my friend introduced me to Blanton's and Weller last summer. Those are a little rich for my blood, even if they are dang tasty. So I've been going through some of the more affordable good bourbons and here's my top 6: 1. Wild Turkey 101 2. Elijah Craig Small Batch 3. Four Roses Small Batch 4. Maker's Mark 5. Buffalo Trace 6. Russell's Reserve 10yr Wasn't a fan of Larceny, but I've never had any other Heaven Hill products and I've heard others are good too. Up next on my list to try is Old Forester 1910 or 1920 and some Knob Creek 9yr.

Any Luck with the Lunkerhunt Prop Frog?
Mine worked great for the first 10-15 fish, then the legs got bent and the feet didn't spin well after that. Also if any small bit of moss or grass got in the feet they wouldn't spin. Was worth the try. Worked well in open water though for a while.

How much to get into LiveScope?
The cheapest MSRP for a Livescope transducer is $1500 and the cheapest graph it works with is the Echomap UHD 73cv for $650. Both can be found much cheaper on sale or in a bundle though. I would think you would want a bigger screen than 7" though too. **edit** In fact, at Bass Pro right now they have the UHD 73SV with side imaging for $449 which is a smokin' deal for that unit. Yep, it's not stand alone, it's a separate transducer that hooks up to a graph with other sonars on it.

Average Bass Tackle Length of Cast?
As for distance, if I want to bomb a big walk the dog I can sling it probably 50yd at most. Below is my in-laws pond and I can cast from the dock to the corner marked which is about 150'.

Average Bass Tackle Length of Cast?
What is your budget? You can get a 150yd spool of Power Pro in 30lb for $12 at Bass Pro during the Spring Sale right now. Or a 300yd spool for $20. And you won't need to change it next year.
