  1. Not the best in all situations but in rivers it can be better than conventional and besides, chicks dig the long rod
  2. Confirmed after the philly game and fined and pretty strong evidence for them also taping the walkthrough for their first super bowl win against the rams so it isn't to much of a stretch to say that they were cheating the entire time not to mention their disparity of home wins versus road wins is pretty huge and the same coaches weer there for the majority of that same time frame.. Ok, i'll stop now as painful as it is to know the one superbowl i remember watching with the eagles was potentially lost to a team that is a confirmed cheater even though they could have won even with the extenuating circumstances.
  3. Were the patriots confirmed as cheaters or not? And McNabb puking or not puking had nothing to do with them winning or losing. And anyone who has played a sport and any level other than peewee league has seen or has puked while playing. It happens when you are over exerting and potentially dehydrated and take in to many fluids at one time I had a guy on my college basketball team who would puke pretty much every game from nerves. But since i don't want to totally derail the baseball thread i will stop here....maybe
  4. I guess it is more the disappointment. Teams that are always good but never good enough to win it all or run into some super hot team that ends up running the table or a team that is a confirmed cheater ends up beating them in the superbowl. I do wonder how the Eagles will do this year since it already seems like the league is stepping in and trying to slow them down without them even playing a snap yet. The sixers are the most dysfunctional though....owned by a cable company for a while now will smith is part owner and they still don't even have a coach. Such a far cry from the great teams in the late 60's to the early 80's and the near misses in the 90's with Sir Charles.
  5. Remember, other than this recent run of success the phillies had one flash in the plan which ended up being the most memorable WS loss back in 1993 and weren't relevant since the early 80's. And don't get me started on all the other sports....city of faithful fans and loser teams
  6. I throw straight braid on pretty much everything so i is never a concern for me. I do color the line with a sharpie though. Now on my fly rod leaders i use either flouro or mono depending on what i have laying around. I have used a leader in super clear conditions but i haven't noticed any difference in success.
  7. i appreciate your optism because i sure don't have it lol They haven't had a good third basemen or even a slightly above average one since Schmidt retired.
  8. I'll also echo the Costa dominance over the Oakley I have owned both as well as a few others like native and smith all being polarized. Chuck had it right when discussing the fit as that is key, no great lens does you any good if you don't wear them. That being said, the biggest difference is when going from plastic lens to glass lenses. I have always liked the smith lenses the best when it comes to plastic but when it comes to glass the costas offer the best non-distortion view out there.
  9. It is tough though to move on from guys like Howard, Rollins and Utley who are all homegrown talent and all came up pretty much the same time with Jimmy being hte elder statesmen. I still think he is an above average SS with some knack for hitting in big spots and he still has a cannon for an arm. Personally i have never been a huge Utley fan. He works hard and plays hard but his fielding is average at best. Just something about him. They also have a pretty good catcher in the minors, last name is Josephs i believe who came over from san fran in the pence trade. I am curious to see what happens with Halladay at the end of the season. if he comes back this year and pitches well and is a free agent wonder who will pick him up....part of me thinks he goes back to toronto.
  10. When you start trying to tie flies what is a good method, at least for me, is to break the fly down into three sections, the head, body and tail sections. Then you figure out what materials they are, how much and how they are applied. Once you do this for a few flies you can start mixing and matching materials to get an effect you are looking for. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=skip+morris+fly+tying&tag=googhydr-20&index=stripbooks&hvadid=7136692539&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1674103998377541548&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_6ard8rr188_b The top two books on this search are really good for beginners. While you may not use all the flies the techniques build on each other as you progress and you will use them on other flies as well. The next book i always recommend is Production fly tying by A. K. Best. http://www.amazon.com/Production-Fly-Tying-Collection-Variations/dp/0871087812/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1375233873&sr=1-1&keywords=production+fly+tying This book challenge a lot of the traditional methods in tying flies as his theory is tying in bulk is the only way to learn a pattern. He also breaks things down like i mentioned above, it is where i got the idea from Good luck and keep on tying!!
  11. Palomar for pretty much everything but for smaller flies or diameter lines i like the improved clinch or the uni knot most times. For some reason i just don't like the palomar with mono or flouro. No real reason but it is probably because i grew up tying the improved clinch and it worked fine on the mono of the day so it feels strange to tie something else.
  12. they look decent especially for a first try. A few criticisms that may or may not hold true once you start fishing them They a little to overdressed. The tails look a little long and i could see them fouling on the hook pretty often. They also look like they may not float upright well due to all the hackle prior to the tail material. If you look at most commercially available poppers they have basically one turn of hackle if any at the end of he popper body. It also looks like you used marabou for the tail which is definitely a good choice but again, make sure it isn't to long or it will foul up the hook. I haven't tied poppers in a while but when i do i keep them pretty basic, assuming they are not spun deer hair that is. Basic popper or slider body with minimal hackle and a short tail. The other option is to use deer hair or even foam and tie what looks like dragon fly bodies on the back as legs to mimic a frog, especially while at rest. They definitely look good and i am sure they will catch some fish. Just keep track of the positives and negatives of your design and modify on the next batch and things will get even better
  13. I would think that swinging in fish by grabbing the middle of the blank would be even worse as you are creating a fulcrum and concentrating the force of the swing to an even shorter portion of the rod. I never swing in a fish but that may be because i am in a kayak and even when landing fish while standing, i still sit back down to land them as it prevents them from flopping around and potentially hooking me or hurting themselves in the bottom of the boat.
  14. I really like Lee and having him, Hamels (who i know is having a down year but really hasn't pitched that bad) and the emerging Kendrick gives them a solid starter foundation for a few years. They will need some infielders depending on the Howard health issue and if they re-sign Utley, which i think they will. Amaro has neglected the offense and was managing the players like Charlie, a little to sentimental and buddy buddy hoping they will regain their form. Players get old and he has never found a good third baseman and had a great OF in the making but sold off even though i still don't think they are that far away. They can't score runs, period. Their bullpen is all aces one day and home run derby the next. I think Lee has the whole no trade deal going so who knows if he would agree. I also thin part of the reason he went back to Philly was one of his kids has some sort of medical issue and CHOP is one of if not the best children's hospital in the country. I could be totally wrong on that one though as people come and leave from philly so often it can be hard to keep it all straight sometimes Now the angry fan in me says trade everyone and start over. Take whatever you can get and start rebuilding by either acquiring tons of minor league prospects or established younger players via free agency, either way it will be hard to pay for the MLB package the next few years watching them flounder in mediocrity.....
  15. Haven't fished there lately but my usual baits this time of year are crankbaits, topwaters and flukes. The trick is finding where they are staging based on water levels and temps. usually the water is pretty warm by now so the more oxygenated and deeper waters produce. Also don't hesitate to thrwo topwaters all day long as they will come fro ma long ways away to hit a bait. Good luck and let us know how you do
  16. So by this logic, a lake that has a lot of pressure they can and should get conditioned to seeing the line and not be spooked. As far as the line diameter goes i don't think it is as much about visibility as it is about the sound signature the line makes when in the water which is then picked up by their lateral line.
  17. but can he hit?? that is what the Phillies sorely need. I believe it is fire sale time....and Papelbon has to open his big mouth and say he didn't come to Philly to lose but it isn't like he has been a beast this year.... http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9517370/jonathan-papelbon-says-philadelphia-phillies-need-sweeping-changes Last time he opened his big mouth he blew 4 out of 5 saves. Get this bum out of town....once a masshole always a masshole lol
  18. This is making the assumption that the fish are smart enough to realize that what htey saw was line and said line caused them to be caught and have a traumatic experience. I for one don't think fish aer that smart...now in clear water fish are skittish about everything so i think DVT was dead on with diameter being the main issue and not color.
  19. I have a FD as well. I think it is the best bang for the buck in a spinning reel on the market.
  20. Being that i am always wanting to learn a few tricks i also decided to check out the site you listed. I have to say that reading those articles was pretty painful...i have never seen so many sponsor mentions in an article in my life to the point that i could barely follow what the point was he was trying to get across. Anyways sorry to derail... I use almost he same baits in the river as i do on a lake with the exception of using more crayfish type baits because the majority of the time i am river fishing I am going after smallies which love crayfish
  21. That is the way i normally fish my stick baits and have landed many a hog only i don't use the reel, just short twitches with the rod tip and by short, i mean a few inches at the most. Bummer about losing the fish but it happens and when it does you know where she lives and also when she likes to feed too which is always the second part of the equation after locating the fish. Good luck!!
  22. I agree and wonder how many rods actually break because of a manufacturing defect. I know of all the rods i have broken, and there have been quite a few, only 3 were legitimate manufacturing problems in my opinion. Two abu garcia rods broke on a hookset between the top two guides in identical spots pretty much and the third is my most recent break. My Sage Bass II rod broke in the middle of a snake guide right at the end of one of the guide wraps and it happened while casting. I have a Kistler Helium crankbait rod and i love that thing......
  23. Looks like a big golden shiner to me.
  24. Seems odd to me too that all those items will need replacing at the same time. Control arms don't just wear out really but bushings and ball joints can but it usually isn't a catastrophic failure. You generally know before it happens that it is oging to go at some point. Definitely get a second opinion and if you are slightly mechanically inclined it really is a pretty easy job.
  25. So for an update....i ended up getting one of the rod saves but the back part wouldn't work. The front looped section did work so that was installed around the front roll bar. after a little thinking i decided to try something a little different. I picked up an expandable white shower curtain rod and put that in the back above the rear window and wrapped it with a bungee cord. I was then able to use the front loops for the tips and then slid the rod butts under the bungee. So far this has worked out great and i can hold a good 6 rods with no interference to the front passengers. The rear passengers may have a little less room but it should work ok and i know it works ok with a car seat in there and my 3 year old can't reach them, yet
