Any PS3 Guru's here?
PS3 is pretty much obsolete at this point. I had that happen ob my old one and did the factory reset and it was good for a little while but then it started happening more often. I eventually got a PS4

Quality Pliers
I got a pair of $20 aluminum pliers off amazon about 4 years ago and they still work just fine. They were similar to these https://www.amazon.com/Piscifun-Aluminium-Fishing-Remover-Generation/dp/B075965MS3/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=aluminum+fishing+pliers&qid=1639270177&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-4 I have used them countless times and they are never taken out of my kayak so they have been through a lot and they are still solid.

Warranty - favorable or fiendish experiences
haven't bothered with any warranty returns with conventional but I have with fly rods and the easiest by far was TFO. Had a rod I broke but they have a no fault deal. I sent it in with a check for $40...guy calls me back and says we don't make that rod any more but I will give you a store credit for $250 which was the retail of the rod at the time it was made, I paid 150 for the combo on sale. I throw in an additional $40 to make up the difference of a rod I wanted and it was shipped out. Whole process took about 3 weeks and about 10 days of that was shipping time back and forth. I've also dealt with sage and St Croix for fly rods and they are all around the same but slower TAT as they have to recreate the piece that broke in their shop.

How to kill yourself while wading alone. FACT !!
Cold and water is nothing to disregard. I am a very seasoned outdoors person and have spent many nights in sub zero degree temperatures climbing, camping and backpacking. Water is a different animal. I never underestimate it and am always prepared for the worst. I have zero desire to become a statistic. @cyclops2 I am glad you made it out and it seems as though your preparation and wits paid off. As far as the wading belt deal, yes it does help somewhat but not that much really. I have tested trying to fill up my waders with and without a belt and it is pretty hard to do, especially if you have a jacket on. Water will push the waders tight against your body and they create some major flotation, even the breathable ones. If your waders do fill up, usually it happens because of a leak if at all the key is to not panic. You aren't going to be drug to the bottom but it does make moving outside of the water more difficult. In cold weather I wouldn't hesitate for a second to cut my waders off if necessary. I have been getting into more cold water river fishing and I may end up going with a dry suit so I know that I will be safe for whatever conditions I encounter.

Fly fishing for bass?
Been doing it since I started fly fishing and it was how I started fly fishing. I gave I up for a bit did primarily trout but for the past decade or so it has been primarily bass. The past couple years I probably fish for bass 95% of the time with my fly rod. my profile pic was my first citation sized largemouth on the fly rod caught a couple years ago. Fly fishing is way more fun than conventional when the bite is slow and light years more fun when the bite is on. It is just a tool though as certain applications are more hassle on a fly rod even if you can do it. If I know I will be fishing in water deeper than about 10', I keep the fly rod at home.

Anyone feel like your collection is complete?
The one beauty of a fly rod is that it can legit do multiple things well with a simple leader adjustment. As far as rods go in my current lineup I have: 3wt-wetfly glass rod 6'6" (hasn't been fished yet) 4wt-Sage DS2 9' probably 20 years old still use it for spring creeks 7wt-TFO min mag 7'11" 7wt-Sage XP 9'-my absolute favorite rod I have ever fished with. I had it blow apart at the ferrule last year on a hookset and I sent it back and paid the $160 for a repair and it is good as new...huge advantage to being made here is they literally made me a new section for my 20 year old rod 2-8wt TFO mangrove one new model the mangrove coastal-one set up with sink tip Sage Bass II Largemouth-10/11 WT equivalent I also have a broken st Croix avid 8'4wt that I am debating on sending back or just tossing it because the money it would cost to "warranty" wouldn't be worth it to me. I love all the rods I have to be honest and they all serve different purposes. TFO are growing on me and for the money I don't think there is a better rod out there. That being said, even my 20 year old Sage XP feels better to me. There is something loose about the TFO that I cannot pinpoint but it makes me check the connections more often and they are never loose. After a few hours of fishing I start to ignore it but it is always there. I see it in both my coastal and my mini-mag though. Now I will say the warranty on the TFO is fantastic. I broke another mini-mag I had when I tipped my kayak over off my cart. I sent it in with a check for $40. they called me back and said we don't have that rod anymore so we can give you a credit of $250 since that is what the rod cost. I said for real, they said yup so I got the new mangrove coastal for $80 if you include the original $40 I sent in and the difference. Oh and I got the rod as a combo on sale when they were discontinued for I want to say $150. I have all kinds of reels ranging from Lamson to Galvan, a couple Sage and a few Reddington. I am not sure if you tie but there is a thread on here I created for sharing flies that has some great info. I will be adding more to it here soon. I am finishing up my last week of 3 classes in grad school so my time will free up a little so I can get to tying for the winter.

I buy as I need/want things. Some things I then get rid of and others, not so much. I think I am at around 7 casting combos, 4 spinning and 8 or so fly rods and few surf rods and catfish rigs thrown in for good measure. the last few years I have primarily been fly fishing and a lot of my bait casters are upgraded citica E series and those parts are harder to come by so if they **** the bed, I will have to get something else. I guess.

Jig Fishing Smallmouth
Not sure if you can call it a jig but the confidence baits draggin' head with a soft plastic is killer. It rarely gets hung up and has a thin wire but strong hook to aid in hookups. They also have a finesse jig that is killer on river smallies.

A Job You Love vs. A Job That Pays Well
My dad was an electrician and eventually opened his own business. I always said I wanted to work with him. Growing up I went on jobs with him occasionally but he wouldn't let me work for him in the summers so I did construction, landscaping etc...instead. I said I still wanted to work with him and he said nah be an electrical engineer instead if you want to be involved with electricity. You don't need to be crawling in attics and under buildings, I did that so you don't have to. And then I go and become a teacher so go figure....lol

Line for Jigs
It does but I haven't experienced the line icing up in winter.
-
Line for Jigs
15lb copolymer except in winter I go with 40lb braid then, I like the line management of braid in the cold.

A Job You Love vs. A Job That Pays Well
You are young, it will change anyways lol. You ideally want something does both. I kind of fell into a process engineering career path and after ten years I decided to go with what I was led to do and that is come a teacher. I took a substantial pay cut in the process but I still love going to work every day. Not that I didn't like working as a process engineer but it wasn't fulfilling. If you want to read a good book on motivation look up the book Drive by David Pink. It goes into detail about motivations for success and while money is there it has been proven time and time again to not be the long term motivator that people think it may be.

I saw the most amazing kayak balancing feat this morning.
A big part is actually knowing your secondary stability in your kayak. I have been fishing out of my ATAK140 for 5+ years and I launch by pushing off and walking from the nose to my seat. I have no issues moving around on it while fishing or landing fish. Nothing better than floating down a river while standing and fly fishing. I will sit if I see some water ahead that I need to maneuver but for the most part I just float and turn and face whichever way I want to cast.

What fishing knot to tie?
Lefty Loop Palomar Nail Knot This cover pretty much all the knots I use except when using super light tippet for chasing brookies I will use a improved clinch.

What have you learned this fishing season?
Yeah I did some fly guiding for about 6-7 years and it definitely soured me on the sport for a while and I really didn't fly fish except on smaller water for 10 years or so. Just got back into it about 5 years ago again and all in a few years ago. Its a different type of challenge though and one that I am sure will rotate back to conventional at some point again.
-
What have you learned this fishing season?
I agree. On moving water I think it is as productive and probably more so in a fish per cast scenario but you are limited to the number of casts you can make. I do like that I can pull my fly out of a non productive area and put it right back in the strike zone without having to retrieve it al lets way back. One back cast and I can shoot the line to where it needs to be. One thing I do miss is a solid jig hit. You don't get that same thump on a fly rod that you do on conventional.
-
What have you learned this fishing season?
Going back to almost 100% fly fishing I learned that fly fishing when not catching is more fun than conventional and way more fun than conventional when catching.

I finally did it, I cancelled my facebook account

Sinking Jerkbaits That Float
When I am fishing jerk baits this is why I keep lead tape that I use for fly tying in my jerk bait box. I can adjust the density on the fly on just about any bait. I have only had a couple baits that do what they say they will do on the packaging. Too many variables for the manufacturer to figure out I guess but they get it pretty close.

I finally did it, I cancelled my facebook account
I use social media of all types. It is entertainment and gives me the ability to connect with family across the country. It also is how things are done these days and being an educator it helps me to keep up with what my 4th graders are talking about lol

Yesterday I saw more kayaks WITH motors than without.
What motor was he running? no fishing kayak could maintain speed to keep up with my motor if I was running wide open. I have heard people claim speeds in the low 3mph range when running bow mounted trolling motors though which I could easily keep up with in my ATAK if I was paddling.

unless it is a sales tax thing but even then that would be one expensive kayak. I registered and titled mine here in VA and I think all in for three years was a around $40 but that included the initial titling fee of $10. I am good till 2024 now. Hard part was tracking down the bill of sale but luckily the company I bought the kayak from was able to look me up in their system and send me a copy of the receipt.
