I read recently in our local paper that Cabot Guns is making a matched pair of pistols from a 4.5 billion year old meteorite. Last year the company acquired a 35 kg. portion of the Gibeon meteor, which was discovered in 1838 in the sub-Saharan part of Africa now known as Namibia. An offer of $250,000 was already made from a collector but these pistols will likely be sold at auction. Estimates run from $500,000 to more than $1,000,000. Apparently Rolex has used tiny portions of the same meteor in some of their watches. I just thought it was an interesting article.
  2. As kids we would hunt them at night in the Spring on an oiled dirt road that ran between two plowed fields. After a good afternoon rain they were all over the road surface. All we had to do was pick them up. Two good nights on that 150 yard stretch of road produced enough bait to last four of us all summer long. Good memories.............haven't thought about this in years.
  3. GOOD NEWS! ..........Last evening our hunting and fishing club approved the prototype bucket structures to be placed in the largest pond. A small amount of money was allotted for the purchase of PVC materials and other various supplies to be used in the vertical habitats. One member even donated the winnings from our monthly 50/50 raffle to help fund the project. I hope to have over two dozen various structures to install when the ice thaws. After a year of effort, more members are coming aboard to support this project. It's rewarding to finally see some progress after lots of initial resistance.
  4. I had the very good fortune to meet and talk with Ken. He impressed me with his knowledge and love of fishing. He was truly a GENTLEMAN.
  5. We would like to wish everyone on these forums a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous Holiday season. May all our New Years be prosperous and filled with memorable experiences. May we have the strength and fortitude to deal with any personal adversities. May we be mindful of those that need support. As an added wish; may we all get a new PB. " Kit " & " Stitch "
  6. Welcome. It's good to have you here.

Anyone have suggestions for a 120-140 grain load for whitetails ? I'll be shooting a Model 70 super grade with a 22 in. barrel. I'd like to experiment with Varget powder.
  8. Years ago I owned one in a pre Garcia Sako. It was a definite shooter with my handloads. I was persuaded to sell it to a buddy. I recently met him and was told that it is his granddaughter's deer rifle and she loves it. I wish I had it back.
  9. I got your back, Buddy.
  10. Not a single thing to worry about going to El Salto. They'll pick you up right at the airport. Drive you directly to the lodge. It's a "bucket list" trip. You'll be treated wonderfully. I highly recommend it. By the way, they offer discounted father and son packages.
  11. I tie directly to the rings. I have changed the vast majority of my crankbaits over to oval split rings. This eliminates the issue of having the line slip into the ring itself. I have found that using a snap with split ring tends to give me more hook tangles.
  12. I agree totally. Dick's dragged the Galyan's locations down to their level.
  13. Very true. Baiting is not allowed.
  14. One of the neighbors got a bear a mile from here yesterday. It ended up right across the road from my Son-in-law's house. We don't think it's the same one we've been seeing. According to the game warden, this one was 430 lbs. Six of the grandchildren got a chance to see it. That was a treat for them.
  15. Okay folks, I have a question that's been raised from reading opinions online. In particular, I'm referring to a 7mm08 but the situation can be considered for any hunting cartridge. I have read on quite a few sites about the advantage of having a projectile pass entirely through a game animal. While I can see this as a plus archery hunting, it completely puzzles me related to firearms hunting. My goal in reloading has always been to combine the components in such a manner as to disperse the maximum amount of energy inside the body cavity..............my question is: has this theory changed over the years?...........if so, why? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
  16. A friend of mine owns a very small pond, that's less than an acre. That tiny bit of water contains bass over six pounds. He doesn't manage it at all. If we could only match the balance that it has, I'd be very happy. The primary difference I see between his pond and others is that it gets a lot of runoff from an adjacent nursery. It also has a healthy population of adult bluegill. We'll see as time goes along.
  17. I struck out this archery season. Now I have to await buck season. I'll be concentrating more on helping some of the grandchildren connect.
  18. I've been selected to initiate an improvement effort on two of the "stunted" lakes at our club. The biggest opposition I've encountered is from older members who still adhere to the total catch and release theory. You can literally catch dozens of 8-9 inch bass in an hour. I have finally gotten enough support from other members to sway the directors board to allow and finance minimal changes. This revolves around building and installing artificial cover, elimination of hundreds of small bass and possibly some supplemental feeding. Convincing the membership has been a year long uphill battle. I hope myself and other volunteers can secure some success over the next few years. Watching Bob Lusk and reading the Pond Boss website has provided a wealth of information. At the very least we've gotten the ball rolling.
  19. Things have gotten better. In the last three days I have seen three different bucks. I had a 6 pt. tonight at 4 yards from the base of my tree. He spotted me when he stood on his hind legs to nibble a branch right below my stand. I need to see a legal buck or a good sized doe.......... Dang, as of now ; my venison bologna order still needs filled.
  20. You may also want to consider an offshore trip. Fresh tuna is really a worthwhile quest. I'd surf fish down around the Oregon Inlet bridge. Just be careful that you park above the tideline.
  21. I've logged between 40 and 50 hours in treestands so far and only seen four deer. This is getting frustrating.
  22. We just got back from my oncologist. The previous cancer is good.... He's sending me for a colonoscopy. The radiologist found something in the TC scan. My doctor checked it as well, he seemed hopeful. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers. I truly appreciate it.
  23. I can hardly imagine how this much rain will affect those villagers in Mexico. Baccarac, El Salto and Pichacos could take in an awful lot of water up in those mountains. I'm keeping those folks in my prayers.
  24. Thanks , guys. I'll have results next Thursday.
