  1. Not sure why you quoted me lol but yeah. What Tom said. You're not going to be able to have a rod that will cover all 3 of those applications. I was just talking about my new fenwicks to give him an idea or a starting point. Would make a good spinnerbait and jerkbait rod but I'm not sure the HMG or HMX would be suitable as a crankbait rod.
  2. Just got a Fenwick HMX in 7'6" for frogging and punching, and an HMG in 7'0" for T-rigs and loving both of them. I can't tell you which one I like more yet (partly because they're different lengths and actions) but I'm definitely liking them for their affordability and quality.
  3. Hold them by the mouth, but don't bend their jaw in a way you wouldn't want someone bending yours. After pulling in a few healthy bass and "lipping" them you'll get the sickness. It's called "Bass Thumb" When they squirm around when you're holding them by the mouth (and removing the hook), their lip pads chew up your thumb. Wear it proud my friend! Wear it proud.
  4. In my opinion, your best bet is to get there as the sun is rising (5:00-5:30) and throw a frog or wacky senko close to the bank quietly. Make sure you're wearing dark clothes and are making quiet movements. Get there, throw directly in front of you standing away from the water. Work it. If nothing, walk forward a little bit and try again. Keep moving forward until your feet have reached the water, then turn and work the frog or senko parallel with the bank. Start with your lure closest to the land and fan cast out towards the middle and work all the way to the opposite side you started on. if this doesn't get you a fish, then get a better body of water with more fish.
  5. Have you tried early morning and late evening? Have you checked the lake online to see if it even has bass?
  6. I suppose my only absolute is to never give up. If the bite is really slow, it's only because I haven't figured them out yet. No reason to go home. Keep changing baits, keep trying different presentations, and find the pattern of the day.
  7. I should mention the lead paint has been painted over in the past, but it's still present under a layer or a few layers of lead free paint.
  8. I recently switched over to steel weights because I've become more aware of the risks of lead exposure due to moving into an apartment with lead paint. When I used lead weights and even now that I'm not I never put any line, lures, or anything else into my mouth like a lot of guys do. Wetting your line to go through the weight or lure or whatever... I've always found it kinda gross. Does anyone else worry about so much lead exposure (because most of us here fish a LOT more than the average guy that gets on the water twice a year) from your weights, leaders, lures, etc? If you're not aware, this could give you some insight: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002473.htm I'm not too concerned overall but I was curious if anyone else has had any problems, concerns, or negative effects from so much lead-handling over the years.
  9. Lets not turn this into an iOS vs Android thread. I put the forum on my home screen that was a really good idea. Thanks.
  10. I'm 21 years old I'm pretty tech savvy lol. The mobile site doesn't let me log in so I have to use the full version. The full version doesn't store my user information. I just wish there was an app. And I know how to bookmark, that's a decent idea.
  11. I have iPhone 5 and on the mobile website I can't log in. It just won't do it. Nor will it save my log in info or keep me logged in like on the computer.
  12. Does an app exist? Because I can't find it if it does... And if the app doesn't exist y'all should get goin on it. I'm sick of this slow website and its even worse on my phone. And no it has nothing to do with my Internet because other sites and games run smooth as butter. Gimme an app! Gimme gimme gimme.
  13. I was thinking about putting an ounce or two on a texas rigged Craw and throw that in the "swirls" is what I meant by "lure." I would never throw a bunch of weight on a spoon or spinnerbait or something haha.
  14. So get as close to the actual rapid downward water as possible? Try to get down inside that eddy that the dam is creating? And yeah the heavy heavy weights is a good idea because dams make your lures looks like light little leaves in those rapids.
  15. Sorry for the stupid "play on words" title, had to do it. So my girl and I got an apartment in St. Cloud this week. Pretty stoked. Although this means now we're leaving the country and going into the city. My boat will feel so deprived and lonely! Although, I'm super thankful that St. Cloud has the famous Mississippi river going directly through it, with a pretty popular dam only a short walk from my apartment. THANK GOD. Now - I've fished a dam before. The Rum River dam, which hasn't provided very well. Number one, that river isn't the greatest for fishing. Number two, I'm probably fishing it wrong! I'll be moving September 1st and I will want to be fishing that dam as soon as possible. Gimme some dam fishing tips, I've heard you can get some pretty good sized fish out of the big Missy! The link below is a youtube video of the EXACT dam that I will be fishing... Just to give you an idea of the water current, size of the river, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sckG1VLu2Cg
  16. About a week ago we had a cold cold cold front move in in Minnesota. Since then the bass have become a little more active and not so EFFING lethargic from the blasted hot water. I hammered em Sunday night. Got 3 Largemouths over 4lbs and about 4-5 other healthy guys. Even nabbed a 6lb 32 inch Northern on a black and red spinnerbait in a weed bed lol. Thank God for braid. How's everyone else fairing lately? Any good stories anyone wants to share that happened lately? Anyone else in the mid-west get some big action since that cold front?
  17. I fish exclusively with my "good friends" and we cast over each other all the time. I find that 99 time out of 100 our lures won't even get close to one another. If I see fish activity in the pads right up next to the bow of the boat where I fish, and my buddy is fishing from the back... I don't mind if he casts up to where I'm fishing. I'm here to have a good time and catch some fish. I don't care about someone casting where I'm casting or catching a fish in my zone. The above rule applies to all forms of fishing. Fun fishing. Friendly sport fishing. Bragging rights fishing with the guys. Tourney fishing. Now if my buddy took me out fishing on HIS boat with his dad or something... I would steer clear of his dad's casting area and try to stick to my own zone until I'm more comfortable with his dad as a person and as a fisherman. When I have people on my boat there's only one rule; first one to catch a keeper gets a dollar from everyone else on the boat. It's just a fun little thing that I'll probably do on every boat I have for my whole life.
  18. You could call up Dobyns and give them your specific rod an ask them if the eyelets will get damaged or not. I'd say calling them directly would probably be your BEST bet for a surefire answer. I use Spiderwire Stealth 30lb Braid and I did notice this "new noise" coming from my eyelets and it does sound weird at first. Trust me, you're gonna love braid. It doesn't matter what you get snagged up on... Just pull some slack, wrap the line around a sweatshirt sleeve and pull it out no problem. I'm yet to have a snag steal one of my lures since using braid. Also, the knot I use for braid has never let me down. It looks confusing at first but when you get the hang of the knot you can tie a new lure on in seconds. Indestructible line, indestructible knot, snagproof, basically invisible in the waters I fish (I don't fish clear clear clear water so I'm not sure how the fish would react to it in those clear lakes) Switching to braid was the best thing I ever did yo. I highly recommend the Spiderwire Stealth (green) that stuff is silky smooth, tough as nails, and has nothing but good reviews from what I've heard/read. I almost bought PowerPro but I got talked into Spiderwire and I don't regret it.
  19. There's always a scale in my boat. I would consider that part of the tackle. HERE IT IS. This is the one thing that I could not go out for more than a couple hours without. After the 2 hour mark or maybe even sooner I'm scrounging into my "Pic-a-nic-a-bass-kit" for a nutty bar, pop tart, bottle of water, or fruit snacks. There's my answer... Snacks! P.S. My "picnic basket" is a tupperware container about 16 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, completely waterproof and has buoys on the side so if it falls in I can retrieve my snacks, keys, and cell phone safely. In-genius fisherman's tool that none of us should be without. It was only like 10 bucks.
  20. I agree with the post above me. I'd be throwin' a Texas rig around the base of every tree in sight. As far as his grammar goes - lighten up. I can read his entire post no problem. "This is where I fish normally. I'm a beginner bass fisherman and I was wondering... Where would I cast my bait to look for bass here?"
  21. Sunglasses aren't a big deal for me. I've got rugged retinas! Bugspray... Meh... I never seem to have a problem with bugs. Hat? I have the thickest most man-pretty hair - No sun penetrates through it, plus I'm italian and have naturally sun-resistant "olive" skin, so there's no need for me to have a hat to cover my neck or face either. I could go without my smartphone, although I always bring it for pictures and the all-important weather radar. Never used JJ's magic. Hmmmmmmmmm........ I'd say... I really honestly can't think of anything that I would HAVE to have with me. I just need my tackle, my rod, and a fully charged battery to beat those docks and pads with. I can live without most of the stuff mentioned here. If I see one that I really agree with I'll come back and mention it, but for now, I just need the essential fishing gear.
  22. Thanks for all the replies y'all. I went fishing this morning at 4:00am until 10:00am and had a bit of luck. The few bass I caught were smaller but this is how I got them: top water buzz bait was the first catch of the morning and that was next to the pads on a 7-12ft point. Next was on a skirted half ounce jig trailed with a scented redtail soft plastic; under a 10-15 foot dock. He struck me after I had bounced it out of the dock, not while it was still under it. That pattern continued until about 8:00 then it died out and I fished weed lines and the lake's hole and also went back to the point I caught my first one and they were turned off. Overall the morning wasn't bad and I got to try out my new power drive motor which is KICKBUTT awesome. It's a real load off my back and easier for me to fish with a nice foot pedal motor rather than tiller control.
  23. It's a Minn Kota Power Drive V1 55lb 12 volt. Any idea what size fuse that would be? I'll see if I can find out myself on the interwebz but if you know offhand that'd work too.
  24. So you don't think the length of wire will cause a problem? Also, I've never had an inline fuse on a trolling motor. I have one on my depth finder but on the trolling motor?
  25. Yeah I kinda figured vibration and noise was the key for night fishing. Funny thing is, that's what I was doing the night I went out, and still nothing. It's just that darn lake.
