The Yampa River is within 3.5 hours of you and is one of the finest smallie fisheries in the west, with lots of 3 - 5 pounders. Just make sure to release them all because our division of wildlife and the US Fish and Wildlife Service has killed tens of thousands of them.

Do you guys think trilene XL is brittle and without much abrasion ressitance at all? Or am I smoking glue on this one?

I use mostly 6 - 14 pound test, mostly mono. Will go with heavier braid in heavy cover, and I do like braid for jerkbaits better than mono, it gives them a better action. For senkos, flukes, tubes, and smaller worms I go with 6 - 10 pound test. Shallow or light cranks I use 6 - 8 pound mono, never going above 12 on cranks. Spinnerbaits I use 10 - 14, jigs 12 - 14, bigger plastics 10 - 14, topwaters besides buzzbaits and frogs I go 8 - 12, buzzbaits 10 - 14, and frogs a minimum of 20 pound braid.

Spinning reels plain and simply cast baits that are 3/8 ounce or under further than baitcasters. You don't get the backlashes either, though tangles can form the occasional bird's nest. I use them for 75% of my bass fishing. If you don't need the quite the distance on a 3/8 ounce lure a casting reel works just fine for that weight though. But for heavy lures, 1/2 ounce and up, casting reels are a much better tool. They also wrench bass out of cover better than a spinning reel. The bare minimum weight for me to throw with a casting reel is 5/16.

Use P - Line CFX fluorocarbon leader, 10 or 12 pound.

Carolina jigs, heavier jigs, hula grubs on heavy jigheads, heavy spinnerbaits, deep cranks, lipless cranks. But when it's 95 plus I usually arrive before sun up and leave at noon, unless I'm fishing an evening bite. Fishing is way better then anyway.

Slow sinkers are good for shallows but that's about it. The sebile magic swimmer slow sink won't fish deeper than about 3 feet, even on braid. So I prefer fast sink most of them time, especially since the intense sun here in Colorado can drive fish pretty deep during the middle of the day.

Both tail dancers and wally divers catch lots of bass, just as good on bass as they are on walleye.

I don't have that problem with my spros or scum frogs.

I love Gamakatsu and have never tried an owner hook. Sometimes the point on gammies does roll over, but I just throw them away by then. Many hav said the Owners don't roll over as much so I do want to try them. I have never had a problem with larger bass bending a gammie though, although my biggest bass are just under 7 pounds.

The lizard seems to be more of a big fish bait and to work better in stained water.

I have lots of lures I don't use a whole lot, not because they don't work but because I use what I know works and it usually works well.

Chipeta Lake is right in Montrose and produces some good largemouth up over 5 - 6 pounds. We also have Connected Lakes here in Grand Junction which is even better. I'm sending you a private message.

Braid is the way to go when using jerkbaits, when you want cranks to go deeper, and when fishing very heavy cover. Use a fluorocarbon leader at all times, unless your fishing a topwater frog, in which case you would use a mono leader. For all other applications, mono is superior. Power pro is the only braid I really trust. I just now respooled it on my reel after the last spooling of power pro lasted two years through heavy use.

I only use a leader if I'm using braid. Besides that, unless I'm vertically fishing extremely clear water, fluoro is not needed. I use 12 - 15 pound P - Line CFX Premium Fluorocarbon Leader Material.

Cavitrons are the best buzzbaits of all time, bar none. I hate using power pro or any braid/fused superline for topwaters though. My buzzbaits are run with 12 - 14 pound mono.

Rapalas are great. I nail bass on the floating, jointed, x - raps, shad raps, husky jerks, fat raps, skitterpops, skitterwalks, skitterprops, and just abou all of them. For crankbaits in bass fishing the #4 and #6 dives to would work for you, as would #5 and #7 shad raps and fat raps. X - raps and husky jerks are best in size 8 and 10 for bass.

I primarly use spinning gear for plastics unless I'm throwing big ones in heavy cover. My rod of choice is the berkley tactix wacky rig series, which is 7' long and has a MH fast action. Gets great hooksets on most fish. Fishing a worm that big I would go with a minimum of 14 pound test. Heavier line helps drive the hook through better as well.

I usually fish the spinnerbait as slow and as deep as I can while still getting the blades to turn. Burning works in really shallow water or when the fish are very aggressive.

Look good to me, who knows if they will work like a spro though.

I like the scumfrog poppers, the spro bronze eye poppers, and the bronze eye frogs best. Heavier braid is best unless you are using the poppers, for which I like 20 pound mono best.

I find scumfrog poppers are soft with a good hookup ratio.
