I hook the weight on the anti-reverse (back reel) switch.

My experience exactly on all points....though I use 5" Rockvibe more than the 4". I wanted the Rage to work, but for me, Keithechs are so much better.

Two hours after sunset one evening a few years ago I set the set the hook on something huge. Towards the end of a long fight, I got what I assumed was a flathead or snakehead close enough to side of my yak to grab the line to hold it close, so I could get my headlamp on and arrange my tools (grips, spreader, pliers). As I switched on my headlamp, I was shocked to see the biggest gaping bass mouth I've seen in my life....or since.... in the blink of an eye, she flinched, snapped the line and disappeared. Since that night I haven't grabbed the line except on 40# or better braid. Never considered it might be a bass, so I wasn't even thinking about lipping her....haunts me still

Yep. That gets me every time. Brushpiles are tough anyway because so often your line is across one or more limbs.....throw some old line down there and its a whole other level of challenge

It might have been this thread that convinced me to buy the kit with about 3 dozen of these from BPS. I've still got most of them, I think. Every couple years I break them out......still have yet to get so much as a bite on one

I've sometimes wondered if a guide couldn't greatly increase those margins by taking a cut from the local big sticks to avoid the better holes

Great post. Might also explain the differences of opinion above on hooksets. I agree with all of them. Most of my chatterbait fishing is fairly fast retrieve in grass and pads with MHF/braid and not much hookset required. But if I'm slow working the bottom with flouro, I'm trying to cross their eyes.

It is an interesting time of the year....can't believe that I'm saying this, but it is almost ok not catching for a while each afternoon. Watching the bass round up huge schools of bait into a cove and then just go to town....I fooled a couple the other day, but couldn't get the hooks set. Seems they are always coming at me about 90 miles an hour when they hit and I can't catch up....so I tell myself it's fun to just watch

I don't have a boat. My first few years of kayak fishing was in a 10 ft Wildy Tarpon. Loved it. But as great as it was, I never thought it was anything more than a placeholder. I was always looking towards getting a boat. Since I got a larger, pedal kayak 20 months ago, I haven't even considered getting a boat. Having more stability, comfort and mobility has made this kayak a much different experience.

I use six wraps with most lines, but I admit I've only used 5 with 12 and 15 pound without issue.

Have you, or anyone else, every rode up near them and asked if they mind if you pass close, but just to transit to a spot 50 yards (or more) beyond....and won't encroach? I get the whole written rules, unwritten rules, golden rules...etc. To me, the situation is a little different if the other guy says, 'Sure. Have at the other side of the cove.' versus, 'I don't think so - get yourself a real motor' -- May open up a spot you've written off....or, I suppose it may just pizz you off...

@BeardedBassCaster, set aside a little reading time.... The only real grass is narrow patches and stretches adjacent to shore, mostly above ledges and drops, with some appearing inside flats and points. There is wood almost everywhere.....hope you're good with your sonar. Temps have come down in last ten days and fish are responding.....they may not be stacked up, but you can find them in a variety of environments right now.....some still on deep points.....some on ledges, some in submerged timber at varying depths. It can take many years to get comfortable fishing the rez. Good luck

When I decided to learn any number of knots, I just grab some line while sitting in front of the TV in the evening. After an hour, I can do it the next day with my eyes closed. For SDJ, I keep each middle finger in the top and bottom loops, and do the twists with the other fingers and thumbs. Pretty easy after just a little practice.

@ChrisD46, my response totally neglected your very specific request about elaztech. (I only use elaztech on ned heads, so don't think about it.) I'd consider revising my response to maybe avoid cps and hitchhikers for those diesel baits. And perhaps the Gammys without springs might work well. You would have to bait the hook before tying unless you can pull the lure over the weight. That doesn't change my recommendation to get some Owner weighted twistlocks....for any other plastics.

I use braid to leader quite a bit, not always...but often....however, I am not at all concerned that bass are line-shy. -My leaders are more abrasion resistant than my braid -When I have to break off....I can.....and I don't lose any braid -When I change baits, I still have a full spool of braid

I used Gammys for a long time. Two issues, however. Unless they have changed, they don't have a spring keeper, so I put bought and put hitchhikers on all of them. Second, the eye was 180 from the hook, so getting the bait straight took a little patience. (The spring lock has to sort of form around the eye.) I made due for a couple years, but now I only use Owners. They come with spring lock and the eye is parallel to the hook, so rigging straight is never a problem. Fusion are a decent alternative. As to weights, get both. For fishing them? Always on the bottom for me.
