Nuke Fish
Should be. However coal plant lakes routinely test high for heavy metals from ash. In my lake in NC, I believe it is likely that filtered water from the ash ponds aren't as filtered as they should be. But real root-cause information is extremely hard to come by. The independent, closed systems may intersect inside or outside the design but we'll likely never be told how. Whether it's directly from cooling water discharge or not, ash is a problem for lakes and rivers.

Size 80 baitcaster
Always the Bait Monkey's proudest moment..... "I just bought this. What do I use it for?"

40%!
I didn't use to, but have had some success this year. Couple things I have done to increase hook ups. 1. I only use braid, or braid with short (<5') leader. 2. Long rod (7'6") helps not just with casting distance, but with hooksetting. The ability to drag an extra 10 or more yards of of a point on each cast makes things much more efficient; especially in deeper water. Sure, I miss some, but I am convinced that it is a net positive... haha

reel cleaning
Thank you. Every year around this time I get the totally irrational thought that just maybe I could or should do my own deep cleaning....completely forgetting that I have near zero dexterity, interest or aptitude. The one time I attempted, I had to send the reel off to get put back together correctly. I even used muffin trays and laid the parts out in order. This picture has me scared straight into avoiding such a ridiculous attempt this year.

What was you're best lure and set up this year?
GP Rage Bug. Reg and Magnum. Same as every year. Maybe because that's what I throw most....by a bunch

How would the pros do?
I don't watch a lot of pro fishing, but I have seen some the past 3-4 years. Sure, I did watch Patrick Walter put on a FFS clinic a couple years ago in Texas. And I've seen some make hour long runs that would take me a couple weeks. But I think we're giving too much credit to their equipment or tackle. Most of the time I turn on a tournament, Taku or someone else is tossing a stickbait into grass, Hackney is pitching a jig or some guy is throwing a spinnerbait at a bush. I bet a lot of us use rods, line and reels much 'better' (or more expensive, anyway) than most pros. Knowledge, experience, decision making set them apart.

Lawnmower PSA
Careful with those dried leaves.... Nearly had a disastrous Saturday....I was mulching leaves with the riding mower and some got bunched up between the engine housing and the deck....as they always do somewhat. I noticed a bit of smoke, and very suddenly, a lot of smoke. Backed up and out of the flames quickly ....fortunately, no damage to the John Deere. Quite a fire, a bit too close too the edge of the woods for my comfort. Was able to get a hose down close enough to douse it. Took quite a while to get it all out completely. I'm not sure if it was a spark from the muffler or just contact with hot engine. Either way, even on a 45 degree day, the risk of fire was far greater than I ever imagined.

Warm gloves you can actually fish in.
For me, that's not a demerit. That's a disqualifier. I just put hand warmers in my pockets, because I've never found gloves that I felt I could fish with. I'm ok with this method into the low 30s. Any colder, and iced line is a bigger problem for me than cold hands.

How would the pros do?
Lots of reasons in this thread about why pros are good. This one here is huge. I think of it a bit like bowling and golf. It is one thing to be top golfer or bowler on your home lanes or course. Quite a different thing to be in the money consistently when playing unfamiliar place every week.

FINS windtamer braid
Thanks, Tom. I hadn't realized that. Interesting concept. If I was going to engineer different braids for casting and spinning, I'd have no clue where to begin making them different.

FINS windtamer braid
I have 20# Fins Windtamer green on one spinning reel. I would recommend it, but not a lot different than PP. Holds color just fine. Surprisingly noisy, considering it feels fairly smooth. Funny, considering the Windtamer name....I got one of the worst wind knots in years the second time out with it. Coincidence, though....it hasn't been any better or worse in the wind than other braids.

Evergreen Little Max Blades
I have used a lot of different blade baits and since I lose a lot, I tend to go cheap, even if it means upgrading the hooks. So I never would have considered paying $10+ for one. However, I bought the Daiwa/Jbraid/Evergreen bundle from TW when they were on sale for $29, and it has the 1/2 oz LittleMax in there. Absolutely love this blade. Great vibration even on slight lift. Hooks are small, but kept even big fish pinned tight. What's particularly nice about the hooks, is that instead of trebbles, they are doubles, with no point facing front. So snags are way, way down from most. Not enough data yet, but, if I lose them at maybe a 1:3 ratio compared to others, the premium price may be worth it. BTW, are there good double point hooks out there? I suppose I can just cut one off trebles, but I'm willing to buy and try some good ones made that way. Also, BTW, the mini spinnerbait and the crank in the bundle are good, too.

Is Enough Enough?
One or two years ago there was a guy who had a fish DQ'd during a multi-day CPR tournament. He caught the same fish 2 or 3 days apart and even he didn't realize it was the same fish. But TD did. Fortunately, the angler was totally cool about it.

Somebody Please Help Me To Understand: Is it Gamakatsu or Gamagatsu?
Bingo. Fact is that is that when you try to write a foreign word in English, especially from a non Romance or non Germanic language, you get someone's interpretation of how they think it sounds. So regardless of how it is spelled in 'English', a pronunciation that approximates the original language is ok with me....usually

Yes. Your recommendation on the LMH was perfect. Easily my favorite rod and in my hands probably 50% of the time. Caught more fish on it the last couple years than the other 20 rods combined.

Polarized Readers
Not at all. I have two different brands and both do FF and phone screens perfectly. The only time I remember a screen problem is the occasional gas pump.
