Somebody Please Help Me To Understand: Is it Gamakatsu or Gamagatsu?

Featured Replies

Is it me?

My mother told me that her pastor once confided that sometimes he mispronounced words on purpose as a tool to get people to listen closer: "And, the tomb was 'emptay'."

Sometimes I wonder if that is what is going on. I seem to hear many people (people that would seem to know, possibly better than me) pronounce what is spelled "Gamakatsu" as "Gamagatsu". I tried to look it up ('Googled it') and even saw some ads spelling it in print as "Gamagatsu" while clearly showing a picture of a bag of hooks with the name "Gamakatsu".

I know that Daiwa actually has "Tatura" and "Tatula" reels that appear to be identical, which is a bit mystifying to me. Not totally mystifying as I know that "R" and "L". . . . Yea, you know what I'm getting at. . . .

Is this a case of IFYKYK?

Childish or not, it does torque my gourd a little when I hear it. I just figured I could ask my friends without being judged, LOL.

'k' is a sound that is present in many languages. However, for the Japanese language, 'k' can be mistaken for 'g' if the voice box in your throat is vibrating when you feel it . You can tell when it is voicing by placing your fingers in the area of the larynx as you pronounce the sound.

Bingo.

Fact is that is that when you try to write a foreign word in English, especially from a non Romance or non Germanic language,  you get someone's interpretation of how they think it sounds.  So regardless of how it is spelled in 'English', a pronunciation that approximates the original language is ok with me....usually

Gum uh cot soo however I know what you guys are talking about when your throats are vibrating and you pitch that G in.

When I was in school, the capital of China was Peking.

I swear I hear them say it with a G on the fishing shows on TV.

I’ve never pronounced it like that but it’s always left me scratching my head and wondering if I’m hearing things.

Glad I’m not the only one.

You want Americans to pronounce a foreign word properly? I'd settle for proper English, and maybe no extra syllables in the south. We always just called the Gammies.

Gammy and gampa?

Are there two different hook manufacturers that it makes that much of a difference as to how you pronounce it, to get what you’re after.

I can see you wanting proper pronunciation, me I’ll stick to Gammy’s.

Just go to a source like Tackle warehouse and see what you find.  Hard to believe a person couldn't figure this out by themselves.

Once everyone agrees on this pronunciation. You can start the discussion all over again with Rapala.
