All the canals where I live there are canoes, inflatables and even jet skies. There are also some nice lakes that are gator free in the Miami area. I fish the canal and a few lakes everyday here and never had a problem. I have seen a few over the years but never even a small problem.

If you want weed guards just throw a blade on a swim jig.

I don't think you should have to be convinced to use it. As with all fishing tools(line, reels, rods. tackle, etc) it is a matter of preference.

I find here in Miami the Jika Rig works on all bottoms.

I use Normans on a few things and never had a problem.
