  1. I think you'd be better off saving a bit more for a baitcaster combo
  2. My spinning reels pull double duty as inshore saltwater rigs so I fill completely with braid. I use one wrap of electric tape then make sure I cinch the knot down tight before spooling the rest. Works great for me!
  3. If it's not too much trouble, can you forward that info over to me as well?
  4. This is what scares me the most about fishing out of an electric-only boat -- when a storm is approaching, you can't get in or to cover very quickly at 4.5 MPH.
  5. Arv's suggestion is what I was going to add as well. In this price range, BPS combos are hard to beat. You can get them with BPS reels (which aren't too shabby, especially the PQ), or with Shimano or Abu reels. If you can be patient, wait for BPS to put them on sale and you get a great value For the spinning reel, I recommend 2500 size (or equivalent), 6'6"-7' medium power rod with fast or extra fast action and 10 lb test braided line (be sure you get 10lb test and NOT 10lb mono diameter ). As a beginner, I'd recommend not trying fluoro just yet as it has a bit of a learning curve on spinning gear. For the baitcaster, I recommend a 6.x:1 retriev ratio, 6'6"-7' MH power rod with fast action You can keep your ugly stick to use for smaller top water and crank baits since the snippy action can actually work in your favor Good luck
  6. Baitcaster. You need slack in your line for this technique, and to me, loose line on a spinning reel = bad
  7. We'll just have to agree to disagree
  8. Yes, the same Grant Hill Dude averaged 22, 8 and 6 for 6 years before his injury. He was also named to the All-NBA team 5-6 times. He led the league in triple-doubles for a few years, and even got more All Star votes than MJ one year. The guy was an absolute stud! You're right that he was never as good as Lebron (then again, who is?) but very few guys could fill a stat sheet like Grant Hill, and he generally had very little help in Detroit.
  9. Hey all Lately one of my G2 STX reels has been acting a bit strangely. I just put it on my shallow crank rod and am having a bit of a time getting it dialed in for casting distance. It seems that if I have any of the centrifugal brake pins on, my casting distance suffers even with reduced mag brake. There's also a screechy noise on the cast. If I turn all the cent brakes off, casting distance improves and the screech goes away but the spool spins almost too freely. The reel s professionally cleaned yearly so I don believe that to be the issue I don't have this issue with my any of my other STX, Winch or Premier Any ideas?
  10. It's a shame Grant Hill had that injury. Without that, I think he goes down as one of the all time greats. He was putting up Lebron-like stat lines before anyone had any idea who Lebron was.
  11. Shrimp, pogie or mullet for live or cut bait For artificials, try gulp shrimp on a jig head or under a popping cork
  12. I fish t-rigged senkos on either my 683c or 703c. I wacky rig with my Extreme 703s
  13. I'm right there with you on the gaff. Granted it was a 30 min fight since the tackle was a bit light but for some reason he really didn't feel like getting the boat all bloody that day. Luckily it worked out.
  14. Put one bait that's larger or a different color on the long arm, and put matching smaller baits on the other arms. I've seen quite a few guys mention that that seems to get a majority of bites on the larger/different color bait
  15. I was also on a boat in Key West when the mate was tossed overboard. He was near the transom rigging rods, we hit a few rough waves and off he went. Thankfully again, no one was hurt
  16. Unfortunately his GoPro was turned off at the time he took the spill
  17. Watch out for those rattle-headed copper moccasins!
  18. Yes, same guide. By now I consider myself part owner of the new boat The big one had a friend with her that was just as big. The guide took a cast at her with his fly rod but it fell short. He took a wrong step and ended up in the water. Luckily he was OK, and we were able to land the single fish but it was an adventure! And yes, dinner that night was delicious
  19. I don't throw them yet but it seems those who do have noticed a pattern on which bait gets hit. If you're using a 5 arm rig, placing a bait of larger size or different color on 1 arm seems to result in that one arm getting hit the most. So even though you can only have 2 hooks, you can employ a few tricks to make them effective

I accept the fact that I look like a beekeeper on the water when I have my gloves, buff and floppy hat on. But I've come to the realization that I simply do not put sunblock on with enough frequency so I'm ok looking a little goofy in an effort to prevent skin cancer
  21. I spent Memorial Day sight fishing for Cobia in Port Royal Sound off HHI and got a few good ones
  22. I agree with Snook on his recommendations. Also I would even recommend a slightly bigger reel just on the basis of line capacity. You never know when one of the big stripers will show up, and you don't have the option to chase it down from the pier. Personally it'd pick a spinning reel for this type of fishing as I think they offer more positives than baitcasters, but to each his own
  23. Your reel should have come with a few small plastic shims. They look like washers. You need to add a few shims to the spool shaft to get the line o play evenly. It'll likely take some trial and error to get the proper line lay
  24. And looking at those pics of the backyard, I may have even been in that house if it was one of the model homes. Small world!
  25. Hampton Lakes in Bluffton, SC? I tried to bribe my folks to buy a place in there when they retired to SC. They opted for a place on Hilton Head instead so I have redfish and other saltwater critters to keep me busy
