Why do most bass hit within a few feet of where my surface lures land?
My opinion is that because that initial splash of the lure landing has the most drawing power of any action the lure will perform from that point until the lure is retrieved. More than any individual “pop” or “plop” or “walk”. My estimations match yours numbers wise. Ive experienced the same with other baits as well. Most jig bites are the initial fall of the bait. Same with most soft plastics. Jerkbaits it’s also usually within the back half of the retrieve. I haven’t noticed this with spinnerbaits. Doesn’t seem to be matter where in the retrieve I am, bass will eat it. With pike and pickerel though, I would say 75% of spinnerbait hits come within 20’ of the boat. I believe that’s due to the angle change as the lure begins its ascent to the boat.

Latest Catch Pics Thread
Been several weeks since I've been able to take my boat out. Truck went down as I was starting a new career so it took a little time to get that sorted. But I am back on the water. It was dead calm, warm, and only small fish were biting. All the milfoil is gone for the year, only the pondweed is left. The water was warmer than I expected and the lake didn't seem very active. The small fish that were caught were all on top, nothing below the surface. Weedless frogs and skitterwalk took fish under 2 pounds all the way down to a few ounces. At least some of them were nicely colored. Fishing was no good but it felt great just to be back at it. Looking forward to when the lake gets into its fall rhythm so I can get into mine. Should be any time now.

Favorite lure to throw
The most fun for me has to be a walking bait. Doesn’t catch the most, doesn’t catch the biggest. But d**n if it isn’t fun walking the dog.

Mowing: How it started & how it's going...
@gim in my opinion, Toro is so far ahead of the other mower manufacturers with quality and customer service. Toro and Troy-Bilt are the only brands I consider now.

@BluegillsTightlines 1. I think everybody has overestimated the weight of a fish during the excitement and adrenaline of reeling one in. I know I do it almost every time. 2. It’s that giddy, childlike joy and excitement that so many of us go fishing for in the first place! 3. What the person said actually says nothing about you, but it does say a whole lot about them. Pity that fool. Like PhishLI said, don’t let them regulate your enjoyment!

KastKing Baitcaster Quality?
Don’t know how their newer reels are, but I have one that is going on 10 years old, I’ve never serviced it due to the cost of service would exceed the price of the reel when I bought it. It just keeps going and going as my dedicated spinnerbait reel. Hasn’t faltered, while I’ve had a couple reels from more esteemed manufacturers fail on me during that time.

Waterproof vs nonwaterproof tackle boxes
I have found it’s easier to keep water out of a tackle box than it is to get it out. So for that reason I avoid using waterproof boxes. I take desiccant packets from beef jerky or electronics and stick them in a non water proof tackle box. Or the Flambeau Ze-rust pods.

Carolina Rig with braid?
That’s how I do my C-rigging. Braid mainline to nylon leader.

Learning to fish fronts.
I do what Joe does. I simply go fishing and adapt to the conditions like clarity, temp, wind and the like. It makes a front a lot less scary. If all else fails and it seems the front has really given them lockjaw, I’ll go to deeper water (12-18’) and starting slow rolling a spinnerbait on bottom. Only a matter of time before it gets bit.

Black walking baits?
I’ve done ok with a black walking bait. I typically don’t fret over color of a topwater bait too much, but I’ve had success with a black walking bait.

Nice report and nice fish. Sounds like the bass were enjoying that dreary looking afternoon!

On Vacation in Warren County NY
@Swest18x there are some really quiet sections of both the Hudson and Schroon rivers that are perfect for a canoe or kayak. There is a public canoe access point for the Schroon River about 5 minutes from the Brant Lake public boat launch. When you go to Brant Lake, the area around the launch is loaded with lily pads so I would have a weedless frog ready to go. It’s kind of shallow but should still have fish in the area. It gets deeper when you get away from the launch area and the rocky banks and islands are good spots to look for smallies.

On Vacation in Warren County NY
Brant Lake and Schroon Lake are both good options and are very publicly accessible. Brant Lake has a mix of largemouth and smallmouth, while Schroon Lake is predominantly smallmouth. The Hudson and Schroon Rivers are also good options in Warren County. Plenty of smallmouth and trout to be caught and have public access.

Mowing: How it started & how it's going...
I’ve neglected my lawn recently. Started a new job doing overnight 12 hour shifts and I just haven’t had the gumption to mow in a couple weeks now. Luckily it isn’t too bad, most of it is fine and only a couple high spots. Hopefully the cold nights that have started here will help me out even more. I got rid of my big mower, now I just use a 21” Toro self-propelled pusher. Easy to maintain and I can throw it right in the bed of the truck without having to worry about the trailer.
