So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
Ya'll punching deep grass edges or mats? What weight for the deep grass. I've only punched the mats so I usually use 1 to 1.5 oz.

I'm trying to squeeze in as many trips as I can before hunting season, then probably pick and choose in the cold months.

So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
I've been catching a few on spinnerbait and swim jig covering a lot of water on the outside edge of the grass keeping the boat in 12-13 feet. I see lots of folks punching the deeper grass edges but I don't have the patience for that. I'm used to punching and pitching in 5' or less and deep pitching is a big adjustment. Toledo is kicking my butt, especially Six Mile. Big learning curve but I'll keep at it. Its a thing now between me and the lake and it is winning for now. A few more trips up there and then its time to winterize the camp and go deer hunting. I did notice a lot of fish in the deep creek channels. Looks like I should have dropped a line on them. Wonder why those are still deeper? Wonder if the lake dropping has anything to do with that. I caught more fish shallow 2-3 weeks ago and the schoolers have slowed down a lot.

I was planning to fish the BassCat tournament but I have a tournament down here that weekend. Looks like a good time, maybe next year.

So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
Caught a lot of small schooling bass Saturday and Sunday mornings. Had a few 2-3 lb bass mixed in. I did catch some nicer fish on one grass point. 5 fish on the one point in an area no bigger than a car between 2 and 3.5 lbs. That was all i found other than the schoolers. Great weekend, hope to be back this weekend again. It was too long between my last two trips. Question for the experts,, schoolers are out in the middle of nowhere. What is keeping them in an area I see as nothing special other than thats where the food is. Has to be something keeping the baitfish there.

lI had to cut my trip short but Saturday was a tough day for me. 2 bites from daylight to noon. Looks like they are generating in the afternoon. I fished the texas side. I talked to a guy that was up there all week and he told me its been tough on him all week too. I promise you,,somebody is catching them.

Me and the wife are the same way Catt. She will come from time to time but its usually just me and fishing. It seems like there would be some kind of growth, places to eat, things to do etc. but I guess the local economy cant support it. But when I think about it that may be what I like about the place.

I find that strange, they even ask me if I want a drink to go. Maybe the word got back to them,,or maybe its cuz I'm old and grumpy too. Anyway, thanks. Back to fishing. Anyone else finding the fish shallow, as in 8 to 10 feet or so.

So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
And we sure do appreciate the help. This thread has cut years off my learning curve up there. As a south LA guy my front depth finder used to get turned on once or twice a year. I now see why they make the big screens. The biggest help to me has been having confidence in some areas to fish them hard, not just a few casts and motor off. I am really surprised I'm catching a few deep fish and the puzzle is coming together slowly but surely. I have not been fishing there in a few weeks, have a tournament down here this weekend but next weekend I'll be there. I really have to spend some time in six mile trying to figure out something deep there.

Yea, its not the most productive way to fish, but it sure is fun to get in a little flurry....and the wife can catch them too.

I never noticed that flat and points. This is my first summer there. I'm trying to figure out the best areas to find some schooling fish. I did find some off a creek channel in a smaller cove off of a main cove. Would I be better off looking at more main lake stuff?

Schooling..........I need to get up there I've been catching a good amount of topwater fish early and late too.

So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
I look at it this way. For me a lot of the fun is finding the fish. It is just like a puzzle and its fun and rewarding putting it together. However if you don't have all the pieces you will never put it together. This thread provides a lot of the pieces. I think some folks want a waypoint, lure etc and just point the boat to it and catch fish. While I'm sure those could be provided they won't help if they are not there or they are set up different for the conditions or just a seasonal change. I prefer to use the information and bang it out for myself. If you learn to do it this way you can learn to find fish on your own and create your own waypoints. I'm doing a lot of idling and fishing for nothing right now, but I did find a few places holding fish and some places that seem like they should. Maybe those never will but the only way to find out is to fish them. I made a trip at home yesterday for a few hours and caught as many fish as I have caught at Toledo Bend in 2 months but I've been fishing here for 40 years. If I make it to 95 I should be able to do the same @ toledo.

So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
Just a point of interest, According to my calculations if someone fished all 186000 acres, averaging 20 minutes per acre, 3 acres per hour, 8 hours a day and 100 days a year it would take 77.5 years to "fish" every acre. I know thats not what you meant Shoe, but some unselfish guys with lots of knowledge are nice enough to share their knowledge with everyone that wants to learn. I'm sure all here would be interested in your insights and the knowledge you have if you care to share. I don't think anyone is interested in having you put down the folks that want to learn or bashing the guys that are sharing information that would take years to learn on your own. I hope you choose to contribute and not drag down what is obviously a thread that has lots of interest.

Good trip Brian. I can't make it up there this weekend but will probably be there next weekend. Good to know there is some good activity somewhere. Catt, what is the name of the small cove west of gilleys that also has a high wire across it?

So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?
Wish I could help Hoyt1. I just started fishing up there recently. I have a travel trailer at 6 mile and usually fish from Housen to Mill. I'm really trying to get a handle on 6 mile. Surprising to me I am finding some shallow bank fish and they seem to be active when I can get there on Friday afternoon. My theory is the boat activity on the weekends makes the shallow fish skittish. That's my excuse anyway. My catches off the bank have been scarce. I am finding some fish on the creeks but can't catch more than one here and there. I am finding the fish away from the bank are larger for the most part. I did find one spot where a creek comes in close to point and crosses a road bed that I can always catch a few fish. My biggest challenge is understanding what I am looking at on the electronics. I'm spending some time now trying to see what is on the topo maps on my electronics and find myself stumbling on some interesting things. I am finding that when I see what looks like bass in 20 ft of water or so is I can get one to bite in the first few casts, then nothing. Hopefully some of the interesting areas pay off one day. I would love for some of the structure guys to post some illustrations of what they look for on topo maps. Please don't post the exact spots on Toledo, maybe use a different unnamed lake for the illustrations because most of the fun is finding them. For now I'm just happy to have a few pull on the line. Thanks to all who help here. This has to be the best thread on the net because of the unselfish guys that contribute.

***atic,,I would like to have a few tough days like that. Fishing in 20feet of water is hard on this old shallow water guy but I'll keep chunking at them. Maybe the puzzle will come together one day. I didn't do much Thursday and Friday. 4 keepers total.

I've seen in a few places where there was a mapping chip with old roadbeds, drains etc but can't find any up to date info on it. It was made by Tommy Martin and another fellow. Anyone know any info on it? Thanks Finally finished reading all of this thread. Thanks to all the guys who share their info and Catt for getting it going. Lots and lots of great info in these 200+ pages.
