  1. My Elite-4x HDI will not save it's noise reduction settings when powered off and then back on. I set the units surface clarity and noise reduction settings for a clear image, but if I power the unit off and back on, the image is cluttered. If I open the menu and select noise reduction and press enter twice (without even changing the setting) the image goes back to how it was before turning the unit off and is clear. Is this a normal behavior? Do I have a defective unit? All other settings seem to stay the same.
  2. My wife goes with me about half the time. She usually catches more fish than I do, because she will break off and I'll hand her my rod while I fix hers back up. She enjoys it, but is not as crazy about fishing as I am. She will get bored pretty quickly if we are not catching fish.
  3. Looks like a black to me. White crappie have pretty pronounced vertical bars of spots whereas black crappie have spots all over.
  4. I haven't used any of the casting versions of the lightning rods, but I will give my 6'6" medium spinning rod a 7/10. It feels great but the construction leaves some to be desired. I am interested in the Lightning Rod Shock. I like the handle and reelseat better than my older Lightning Rod. I am going to pick one up next time I am in BPS.
  5. I had a Blackmax and Silvermax as my main reels for a long time. Like you, I thought that the Revos could not really be that much better. Then, I got a gen3 Revo S. They really are that much better. And, I discovered that I prefer centrifugal brakes.
  6. Wow, 2 whole octaves.
  7. I use a leader mainly for abrasion resistance. Braid does not stand up to rocks very well. Plus it is easier to break off if I get really hung up. I would recommend stronger than 8 lb. test though, especially if you have a tendency to set the hook aggressively. I use 12 lb. on my casting rigs and 8 lb. on my spinning rigs, but I'm usually crappie fishing with the spinning rigs. I tie the leader on with an Alberto knot and pull one wingspan off the spool, so I can retie a few times before needing to tie on another leader.
  8. I bought a spinning model from a member on here. I like it quite a bit. I put an Abu Orra S reel on it. I haven't found any other rod in the $50 to be as sensitive. I think I'm going to pick up one of the Lighting Rod Shock and another Orra S.
  9. The key to being able to be truly fluent in other languages is practice. In Europe, there are many different languages being used around everyone all the time. Drive an hour and you are in another country that speaks another language. Here in the US, most of us don't even have exposure to other languages. Maybe if you are near the Mexican border, you would be exposed to Spanish on a daily basis, or French near the Canadian border. But for me, here in Arkansas, I am never around another language to have the need to communicate in any language other than English. That makes it difficult to learn a new language just for the heck of it. I can speak enough Spanish to get my point across if I had to, but it would be really rough.
  10. Lowrance Mark series if you want grayscale. The Elite 4x is color with downscan and regular sonar for $199.
  11. I tend to do better when I remember to put my lucky plug in the drain on the boat. Any plug will work though.
  12. The Elite 4 from Lowrance is a good affordable unit. They have the Elite 3x now, which is only $100, but no DownScan or GPS.
  13. The remains on the right are definitely male, based on the pelvic structure. The remains on the left appear to be female, but the pelvis looks broken and not sure what is up with the rocks sitting on the pelvis.
  14. I bought mine from the Lowrance factory store online.
  15. Here on the white river in Arkansas, you can catch them on small jerkbaits and inline spinners.
  16. +1 on the Berkley Lighting Rod. Also check out Abu Vendetta and Veritas. May still be able to find a good deal on a gen 1 Veritas.
  17. I like it a lot. I think it is probably the best you could do for $200. With the screen being small, it is sometimes hard to see things, especially if you are running it split screen. But, even the elite 5 is almost double the price and not that much bigger of a screen. I have my transducer on my trolling motor and the head unit mounted on my front deck, so when I am standing, it is quite a ways away from my eyes. If it was mounted on your console, you could see it fine.
  18. I have taken a paid day off to go fishing. Where I work, we don't have sick days. If you aren't there you use a paid day off, except for jury duty, bereavement, or a maternity/paternity leave.
  19. I've got a Lowrance Elite 4x HDI. Sonar and Downscan. I think it was $200.
  20. I do exactly this. 8lb fluoro leader on spinning gear, 12lb on baitcasters.
  21. I make mine about 6 feet, just so I don't have to retie a leader very often. I can switch baits or break off several times on a 6 foot leader before needing to retie. I use an alberto knot and barely even notice it going through the guides.
  22. Berkley 7" Power Worm in Blue Fleck.
  23. I got a 360 size bag from BassPro. Here it is: Browning Tackle Bag. It's got a lot of useful pockets. If you are carrying it any distance though, I would get a backpack style tackle bag.
