A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
Hey guys, Reporting from Cobbet's for Sunday the 29th. Easily had my best day in a long long long time. The bite started early and stayed hot all day long. The key was to chunk and wind near any kind of shallow flats in 4-8ft of water. I think my partner for the day hates me although by regular standards he had a decent day. He boated 20 bass with them coming on Jerk Bait, Trap, Jig. I landed 61 yes 61 on Jerk Bait and Trap. All decent fish with the majority in the 2-3lb size limit. We had some bigger ones in the 3.5lb range as well but nothing I would say that broke 4lbs. We had the lake all to ourselves except for a few trout fishermen. I saw another bass boat but I think he left due to the showers. I had to pry myself off the water if I wasnt house sitting and had a dog doing the "I gotta Pee Dance" I would have stayed later and tried my luck to run at 100. Unbelievable so my thumb is tore up and I couldnt be happier, great day hope you guys loaded the boat like I did.

Mattlures question...
I just received one of your baits in the mail Matt. Wow great looking bait. I got the 5in female BG. I was wondering exactly what size treble hook do you recommend using on this? My intuition calls for a big EWG Gamakatsu #2. let me know if Im right. Thanks.

Transplanting bass to another lake?
hehehe Its the lil short school bus...

Are you surprised ???
I understand where FC was going with his thread I was just also stating that for some waters where some members of the board fish they dont hold that kind of size. I agree with you again Raul that a Jig/Pig is a great big fish bait. I have easily caught all of my PBs on a Jig/Pig. I have ordered some Mattlure swimbaits and plan to try them out this year. I would just like to hear the "alternative" thinking to catching +10lb bass. What mindset do you use? Big Baits big fish? Anyway interesting topic.

This is so awesome! You need to see it!
Very cool Video...

Are you surprised ???
Well I have caught a handful of LM bass in the 5-7lb range. I have landed one that was 7lbs 11oz, check out my avatar. I however diminish my odds by the geographical area of the country I fish. NH isnt known as a monster bass state. The NH state record is only 10lbs 8oz caught in 1967. Now Im not saying that there aren't any +10lbs LM bass here, just saying they are rare. I would be very interested to hear some of the techniques that have produced your large numbers of +10lb LM bass.

A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
Hey guys, Giving you the report form Cobbetts pond for Sunday the 22nd. It is getting warmer with these sunny days, water temps were 44.5°F at launch time and warmed upto 50.1°F when we left. Fish were active but due to the lack of wind/chop on the water were somewhat hard to catch. I had 8 LM in the boat by Noon and 1 brown trout, trout went 2 lbs all the bass were between 1-3 lbs. We had a long stretch with no bites after noon, by 1pm though the wind picked up and the fish turned on. The next few hours I picked up 12 more bass in the 2-3 lb class and 1 pig smallie measuring 4lbs 8oz on my friends digi scale (pic to come when I get it emailed to me). So the day turned out good 19LM bass 1 SM bass 4lbs 8ozs and 1 brown trout. We were off the water by 4pm.

Global Warming And Effect On Fishing
Well I am certainly no expert when it comes to global warming and to be honest I have not made up my mind as to the validity of it. What I do know and believe how ever is the ever present danger of pollutants getting into our atmosphere, lakes, and soil. Acid rain, mercury levels, untreated waste these are some of the pollutants I am concerned about. Living in the part of the country I do, some of the pollutants come down with the rain and infect fish and other wildlife. In the Northeast some lakes have exceedingly high PH levels to the point where they may no longer sustain fish. I also have heard of some reports that birds of prey that feed on fish in these regional rivers have had serious issues with their reproductive systems. I have personally been on a stretch of river here in my own state that the smell of untreated waste was so strong and potent I had to leave. I also read in BASS about the bass in the Potomac R. having both sex organs, no cause or reason has been found. I personally think these problems are more troubling than global warming because they are happening now rather than decades from now. Now I have no experience about these topics but they concern me.

A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
Hey guys reports from Cobbet's Pond, are good. We had a good day keeping in mind at what the temps are/were. Started out water temps were 36.5°F it took awhile but throughout the day got up into the 39.0°F range. We did ok at first I started out with a 2.4lb SM, other noticeable catches were a 2lb Brown Trout, 1.5lb Brown Trout, 3lb LM. I admit today was a day I could have used a larger boat. The wind was a definite factor to be contended with. We had some white caps in the bigger sections which made it extremely difficult to fish as slowly and methodically as I wanted too. At the end of the day I had 10 Bass in the boat and 2 Brown Trout, and my fishing partner had 6 Bass.

Good , inexpensive bigginer boat?
I got a steal on my boat, 640 Nitro with a Johnson 60hp, fish finder, trolling motor, 2 bank onboard charger. I paid not much more than what you are planning on paying. I have since upgraded the trolling motor to a 24volt 74lb Minn Kota, also added 2 Lowrance fish finders (front deck and console). This boat was garaged permanently for 3 yrs straight before he sold it to me. Decent beginner boats can be had for short money you just need to keep your eyes open and ready to jump on a deal when you see it. Thats my first boat, no jon boats or flat bottom deals. I got a deal and try to keep it as clean as possible.

A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
Ok the Launch onto the Merrimack R. in Nashua: Take the Rt 3 extension from Exit 17 off the Everett Turnpike to the RT 3 intersect. Turn Right toward Nashua and at .2 miles, turn left on Hills Ferry Road. At .25miles cross RR tracks and turn through gate. Access is .55miles further. Good paved ramp and turnaround. Parks 3-5. Those ponds I know pretty well. Musquash and Ottarnic Ponds both small and real shallow. They get choked with weeds pretty bad. I have done ok on both but nothing to big, from either. As for the Nashua R. its a great fishery although I fear its getting allot of pressure these past years. I usually fish the Mine Falls stretch. Some good bass are there for sure. Allot of great structure. For people new to the river Id suggest going slow for if you dont know the river channel you can get into some skinny water and do some damage to your boat.

Good deal or not???
Hey logger, Well what I tell everyone dont skimp on the trolling motor. It does seem like a decent deal, quickly looking at the BPS site they are selling a 55lb bow mount foot controlled motor for $470. You will use the trolling motor more than you think so whether caught in some nasty wind or some nasty current fishing a river its good to know that you have a motor that will handle all you throw at it.

Rod Locker Locks
Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.

Rod Locker Locks
Now, I may be crazy but I could have sworn I came a cross a "locking safety bar" that went from one side of your boat to the other and locked down your rod lockers and tackle storage. Was I just dreaming that?

Buying a 1999 Nitro 640 LX for $5,700
I have the same model just a little older. You are correct it is small and storage is at a premium. Question to you that you have to think about. Are you going to be fishing big water? If your only fishing 1000 acre bodies of water and smaller that might be a good boat for you. If your fishing big water, you might want to look at something bigger. I have that same size, most of the ponds I fish are in the 200-800 acre size. Yes, I will admit Id like a bigger front deck and storage space. The thing is it gets me out on the water and on fish and ITS ALL PAID OFF.
-
How many lbs of trolling motor do I need?
The biggest one you can afford, dont skimp on the trolling motor you will use that more than anything else in the boat, other than your rods and reels. By the sound of it I dont think you would need a 24 volt setup.

A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
Hey guys, I have no idea what to expect from the weather on Thursday. I have heard anywhere from 4-12in of snow. I plan on getting out on Cobbets or Canobie Saturday but I'm worried about snow banks I might have to try and get the boat through. Id take water temps in the 40°Fs hopefully thats what they will be come Saturday. Theres a decent Launch in Nashua for the Merrimack River, the other that I know is in the Concord area, near a college. The Merrimack has an abundant supply of Smallies, just most are going to be small. If any of your are truly serious about fishing NH waters I would gladly suggest picking up a copy of Clark's Fishing Guide. I have some reports from this past Sunday on Kingston lake and it was a tough cold day. Two of my good friends were on the lake and scavenged for bites. Water Temps were in the mid 30°Fs, they only managed to scrounge up a handful of Crappie. Welcome abord to you new guys, feel free to offer up any questions info or tips you might have. Lets hope it warms up fast and we can get to sticking some pigs.

How many
I have had many a day fishing for Stripers and Blues in the mouth of the Merrimack River. Whether it be chunking with live bait or chunk mackerel or going after then with casting gear of fly rods. My dad took me and my brother countless times to go deep sea fishing. Since we arent religious on Easter Sunday we would go to the beach and we would fish off the jetties for flounder. I have even caught a skate and reeling that in was a chore against the tide it folded up like a parachute. The best I have done was a 15lb Blue Fish on a flyrod and a 21lb Striper on chunk Mackerel. Good times and when it was all over we would hit a fried clam shack on the way home. Cant beat that.

Red Eyes
To be honest a Bass's eyes will turn a more noticeably vibrant reddish color as it nears its spawning time and slowly return to its natural color. From what I have been told and what I have witnessed out on the water...

A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
Granite State Rod and Reel is in Nashua NH. Small place but he is a great guy and full of knowledge. Catching bass in the +7lb range isnt an easy thing to do, if it was everyone would have a trophy on their wall. There are big fish in this state but they are hard to come by. It takes fish +15yrs to reach that size up here, with the shortened growing season. So when a big fish like that comes you know your doing the right thing. So take a picture and send it on its way, and get a fiberglass replica mount made if you want to have a trophy on the wall. Those are the fish we want to have breeding in our waters not the 1-3lb d1nks we have to weed through.

A Shoutout for NH Fishermen!!!
I'll be trying my best to get out on Cobbet's pond this saturday, hopefully we will have decent weather. I heard a chance of snow for Thursday? Anyone else hear that? Nice pig Walkingboss. Always good to see some piggies. Yes I have been to Zylas its got a decent selection. My 2 top NH tackle shops are Northern Bass Supply and Granite Sate Rod and Reel.
