  1. Thanks Tom.You made that very easy to understand.
  2. when a lake turns over it kills the bite for a while.I dont know if it shocks the fish or what but it's hard to catch anything.I have seen farm ponds turn over and kill the fish.It used to happen a lot more than it does now. When i was young it seemed like a normal thing in the heat of the summer to hear about the fish dying in someones pond because of the turnover.
  3. Dobyns gives a 30% discount off of retail to all veterans. You have to order through their office.Send them any proof of service then call and place your order.
  4. I just make a leader about an arms length or sometimes a little longer.I do use the double uni knot..Most of the time i use fluoro for leaders. For carolina rigs i don't like the carolina keepers either. They cause too much twist.I use the barrel swivels.I have also used a 3 way swivel behind the C rig instead of the regular barrel swivel and tied 2 lizards or worms.
  5. Someone needs to tell these ducks then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVU_wOy0zAM I have fished right beside them while they were eating the baitfish.
  6. I have fly fished for bass with a deer hair mouse and the bass love them.I use these in the spring and usually early morning but i bet they would work just about anytime you would fish a frog.
  7. These ducks eat bait fish.Would not surprise me if theres not a big bass swimming under them somewhere.
  8. I collect antique lures and fishing equipment and as far as the old stuff like heddon and creekchub and the older companies, there is a lot of history available with timelines and dates but back then production was at a minimum compared to today. There were only so many companies and products on the market. Most of the stuff was american made and records were kept and easy to find today. But there came a time when bass fishing exploded into the market that we see today and there are lots of companies. The equipment is mass produced in factories by the thousands if not more. They produce them as fast as the demand calls for them and they are not worried about history. They are more about the money.A lot of this stuff is produced overseas and imported and theres just no way of keeping up with all of it.I agree there should be someway to research this stuff.I enjoy reading about the old rods and lures and when certain things stopped being produced or changed to a newer product but im an older fart. -Steve
  9. Great tip right there.I did this when i started and it saved a lot of line.
  10. Well this just made my tackle purchasing a little easier.Thanks.
  11. Get you some of this and trim it to fit the edges. It is door edge trim for autos. You can buy it at walmart cheap.
  12. Great day fishing for you.Congrats.Thanks for sharing it.My first big bass was 35 yrs ago.I remember it well.I was using a purple worm because i had just seen Jerry Mckinnis using one on The Fishing Hole.I was fishing in a farm pond with my older brother and i thought i had got my worm hung up on the bottom when it started moving.I did'nt know anything about Drag and my brother kept yelling at me "check your drag. You dont want to loose him".As i got it closer to the bank i kept saying to myself "dont get off, dont get off".I reached down and grabbed it's lip and it tried to shake my arm off.It was about 4 lbs.At the time it was the biggest fish my brother and i had ever seen other than on tv.When you are used to catching bluegills...that one is a monster. What a memory.
  13. I have never used them but i bet they would work great. Mabey try a couple small orange/yellow colorado blades hanging from sides for legs?I can see where even spinnerbait skirts like they use for the frog legs would work if they would'nt get in the way of the hooks.I think you have a great idea.Post pictures if you get one finished. It would be interesting to see. -Steve
  14. I started with the old stump jumper spinner baits. This was the only kind my dad would buy back in the day.First crank baits were the original rapala's and the jointed rapala's and the rebel lures..Now i throw a lot of Terminator spinner baits.Best color is probably chartreuse and white.I have good luck with inline spinner baits.Mepps and roostertails.I never was great at crank bait fishing but i have several boxes of different kinds. Most are old and some you probably cant find on the shelf today.I have no idea what the best crank bait is today. My walmart sells these cheap spinner baits for $1 each and i have caught a lot of bass with them.Several were really nice bass.A lot of times i don't think its the bait as much as where, when and how you use them.
  15. I've used them and it works great.Last for a long time. Also the shad formula is great on crappie jigs and i have used it on float and fly rigs for smallmouth.
  16. She did a fantastic job.A nice fish and a woman that will take time to mount it for you. Both great catches!
  17. I use zoom finese worms and lizards on shakey heads and i cast them everywhere.Best for me is probably shallow around banks and structure with a super slow retrieve.
  18. That is a bandit 100 series. Still available. http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_21880_-1?count=2&cm_mmc=pla-_-Fishing+Baits+Lures+Hard+Baits-_- I have a few of these but not the color youre looking for.
  19. That is a nice one.Congrats dude.
  20. I have an okeechobee flats tackle bag like this one. You should enjoy it.I'm a big guy and when this bag is full i do NOT want to pack it anywhere.Great tackle bag but the dang thing weighs a ton.
  21. I can't really help you with the pike fishing but as for the bass you can ask a thousand people and get a thousand different answers. All ponds, lakes, etc are different. The plastic and color that works for me may not be so hot in your area and vise versa. Also everyone has a different style of fishing different plastics.Experience is the best teacher.I would buy a few bags of different worms/creatures and fish them. You will figure out what works for you and what won't.Not everything will work and you will end up like all of us with a tub of plastics in the garage that you seldom ever use but hey...that's bass fishing. When i started using plastic worms i had no idea what to use either.I would go into my towns little bait shop and look at the worms hanging on the racks to see what people were buying the most of.That's what i bought and it worked. Also i would watch people fishing around me to see what they were catching them with.Just buy something you are comfortable using and go fishing.
  22. No......I read that twice to make sure i read it right.
  23. Welcome to BR.Try mixing a very little blue to the pearl to get the blue right.I'd be interested in seeing it also.
  24. Why not use a longer piece of pvc and build a chuck on both ends of it.You could even use more bolts on the shaft end to grip it better.I have never built one so i really dont know.Just an idea.
  25. I agree.Fly fishing is fun and addictive.I love it.It can be very expensive but it don't have to be.The most expense will be your flyrod, reel and line.I tie my own leaders and my own flies.I started with an old 5wt from a flea mkt.Learned to cast and fish with it.If you are going to target bass go with a 8wt.It has more backbone to set the hook and won't wear you out casting like a 9wt or heavier. You can learn to make the leaders and flies on websites. To me that's part of the fun.Tie your own and catch fish with them. Cabelas offers a free Fly Fishing University to anybody that wants to take the course..Some great info on there and they will give you free casting lessons if you are close enough to go to one of their stores.
