Braid to fluoro questions
Is this on spinning or casting gear? Big difference between reeling into a fish on light spinning tackle or laying the wood to them if your flippin' heavy cover. If it's spinning tackle, and a lighter wire hook, all you really need to do is reel into the fish and lift. I have to watch myself that I don't jerk too hard. Also want to make sure your drag is set appropriately. If it's heavy gear, you can actually tear a hole in the fish, making it easier for the hook to come back out. My preference in an EWG superline hook over a straight shank flippin' hook in that situation. I believe once they are hooked the bend in the EWG keeps them pinned better. This is a big area of debate, as many other people will argue better hook ups with a straight shank. I also had trouble with a rod that was too stiff. When I got bit, the rod wouldn't load, the braid didn't stretch and I was pulling it away from them rather than sticking them. Could be lots of factors that you can play with, but I run braid to fluoro on all my spinning gear and I also use it most of the time I am pitching Texas rigs with great success.

Dobyns should honestly "Mag" rate everything
Not to hijack this, but I'm thinking about picking up a Dobyns Fury. Never used one, and prob won't have the opportunity until I own it. Anyway, I'm going to be using this rod for a lot of flippin' and casting jigs and Texas rigs, 3/8-5/8oz. 15-20# fluoro or 50-65# braid. I also run into the rare occasion where I might have to increase my tungsten to upwards of 1oz. Which rod would that suggest? 734C, 735C, other? Thanks for your time, RT

Retiring a rod/the search begins.
I own a few BPS products. I tend to only buy them when they are on a significant sale. Closest BPS is 3 hours for me, but I have handled the Carbonlite. I believe 7'3 MH/XF. Nice rod, but it's not going to make the cut here. I'll be sure to check out the dobyns when I can. Thx. Thanks. I think Gander might carry these... I hope. Especially if that 40% "sale" hits my store.

Advancing from ugly stik....
^^^ similar problem on my Revo X casting reel. Threw square bills and 3.8's on it with no problem in the warmer months. Then it got cold and I tried to throw a jerkbait on it. About every 3-5 twitches my spool let loose and unless I thumbed it constantly, I'd end up with an overrun.

Advancing from ugly stik....
I have a Shimano Sedona 2500 on a Daiwa Aird X. Retail on TW is about $125 total. I think I paid about $100 during a holiday sale. For the price, it does everything I ask it to do without any issue.

Retiring a rod/the search begins.
I've finally got to the point where I am strongly considering retiring my first ever baitcast combo (at least from tournament fishing). The setup is a BPS JM Titanium 8 7'2 MH/F paired with a 6.8:1 Carbonite reel. The gasket in the butt of the rod is constantly coming out, exposing a sharp edge. Gorilla glue works for a short time, but on the water repair is frustrating. The grip is worn down to next-to-nothing, and one of the line guides is held on by a wrap of braid and adhesive. The reel, though it has never completely failed, makes a wonderful grinding/buzzing noise even after a thorough cleaning, and feels like it could seize up at any time. The reel, sure I can replace that. I'll welcome the opportunity to add another Curado to the collection. But, the rod... Which I found out of dumb luck (and on sale... I had a $200 combo budget at the time) was discontinued a while ago. When this was my only casting combo, it did anything I needed it to. Jigs and Texas rigs, poppers and buzzbaits, lipless, etc. But, the bread and butter... The sweet spot... This became my ideal spinnerbait rod. If you've made it this far, thanks for sticking around. You've already realized that I need to replace a rod which is no longer available. And so the search begins. It is my goal to find a replacement by next spring. The rod selection in the stores in my area is limited so what I'm asking is for a few suggestions of your favorite spinnerbait rods. Primarily throwing 3/8-1/2oz in shallow water. I am not going to set any particular price, length, power or action. Just asking for your personal preference and I'll take it from there. All the best, RT

The latest sale thread
I'm waiting for this sale to hit my location as part of the "shift" from stores that don't sell RVs.

Bluegill imitation paddletail colors?
I'm a fan of Ayu in the Rage line. But, if you buy shad/white colors you can make them any color you want with a few markers or dips.

Berkley Skinny Cutter 110+ Rip Bait
Seeing a lot of people who prefer the "skinny" cutter and I'm starting to second guess the order thats in transit right now. I fish heavier line (up to 15# fluoro) for some jerkbaits and I'm curious how the regular 110+ will respond....

Using O rings with wacky worm setup?
I typically use 2 two o-rings and cross them, so the hook point is positioned in the same way it would be if I were to hook through the bait. I feel like this angle helps with hook up ratio. Doesn't seem to have any effect on the number of bites I get, but my stick baits last much longer.

First time to Texas (Austin/Waco)
Good evening! Taking a trip to Texas at the end of October and I'm looking for some insight on the region. Typical weather that time of year, favorite patterns to run, etc. I'm from PA so this is a whole new ball game. I already got hooked up with a guide so Belton, Inks, Lady Bird, Lake Austin, Lake Buchanan, Georgetown, LBJ, Decker, Travis and Stillhouse Hollow are all possibilities. Anyway I'm looking forward to the trip and hoping you might share some local knowledge! As a bonus, feel free to throw in any of your favorite restaurants or non-fishing activities to do in Austin/Waco in the fall! Thanks RT

Mono or Fluoro leader
First off, let me say that I have tried to get away from using mono, and failed miserably. As much as I like braid and fluoro, mono certainly has it's place. The extra stretch in the mono will help act as a shock absorber. I'm guessing that's the argument if your concern is losing fish at the boat? Depending on the technique a more moderate action rod can also help with those last minute surges. Fluoro also stretches, but has lower visibility. If your issue is breaking off, that will allow you go to a larger diameter line. I had a similar problem, but the issue was my knot. I wasn't trying the old one consistently, and it didn't like the shock I put on it during a hook set. Learning a new knot was a lot cheaper than replacing all my line. Lots of variables here. Moving baits vs bottom contact vs topwater, the cover you're fishing, how line shy you think the fish are, budget, etc. But, if it's something you want to experiment with mono is affordable and readily available. I've spent a lot of time testing and fine turning, and I still make at least one major change every year. Remember everyone has an opinion and there's more than one "right" answer ?

Ned rig jig head
Appreciate all the feedback on the heads and the rod power. Placed my first order with @Siebert Outdoors yesterday to try the Morel... And naturally picked up a handful of other items? Thanks, everybody.

Ned rig jig head
I've read a ton of threads on the Ned rig, but what jig head is everyone using? I'm losing way too many fish, and I suspect I'm just not hooking them very well. I can't wait any longer to set the hook or reel into them, or I'll have to perform surgery on every fish I catch. I've used Z-Man Ned Lockz and Owner Block Head... Both with similar results. I'm open to suggestions! I'm using spinning gear with braid to fluoro leader and a 7' ML rod. Thanks

Jig head color
Some of my most productive jigs (or baits in general) are ones that look like they've been through a blender. Skirts are faded or changed color from scents and dips, head is chipped up and the hooks been sharpened half a dozen times. Its either 1.) A confidence thing and 100% between my ears or 2.) The more dull, beat up and weathered a bait gets, the more natural it looks. My opinion is you don't need to paint them, but you certainly should paint them ?

Fishing Partners
I have a very good tournament partner. We fish local club tournaments, but he also fishes B.A.S.S. I learn a lot from him and his experience. I'm a better angler because of it, and IMO we make a pretty good team. I also have friends and family that I "fun fish" with. I do my best to share my knowledge (and gear) with them. That being said, they want to be there and be successful. It makes the experience better for everyone. If someone is too lazy, or just doesn't care, that's their problem and I can't feel too bad when the results show it. But, the one thing I can't stand and won't tolerate is negativity!!!

R2S Bully Wa 2
For those of you who fish the Bully Wa 2 I'm looking for some on the water experience between the 55 and 65 size. Outside of the actual specs, what situations do you favor one over the other? Where does each excel? Do you really need both sizes? Wanted to check here before I end up buying $100 of frogs in trial and error. Much thanks!

Toad hooks
I throw them on a single swimbait hook with a screw lock. If you want to stick with heavy gear you might want to look at the owner beast hooks.

Latest Catch Pics Thread
Caught a few dinks burning a chatterbait back to me, so I stayed with that pattern and stuck this girl. 6/16/2019.
